Root Okay... how impact does Root have on Eris lag, really?

Technically, yes, they could void the warranty. So long as you can run the RUU to install the stock 2.1 ROM, though, I cannot believe that they would ever be able to tell that the phone was rooted.

Also, I do not believe that anybody has ever reported that a rooted Eris with a hardware problem returned to Verizon was charged full price for returning a rooted phone. That said, technically, yes, you are doing something that invalidates your warranty. I have been running my phone rooted since late May/early June, and I have had absolutely no problems.

Thank You doogald. Whats is RUU and which ROM should I use ?

RUU is a process to return the stock ROM and bootloader to your phone, so your phone will no longer be rooted and will be running the stock Eris firmware.

These two posts tell a bit more about it: xda-developers - View Single Post - Official Eris RUU and xda-developers - View Single Post - Official Eris RUU

If you have trouble with that download link, let me know and I'll see if I can find it at another location. Or, google this: RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed_with_driver.exe

^ Per the last two responses... Which Sense ROMs are the best? I'm guessing that only Sense will show the little green dot on the Email icon for how many unopened up how in your Inbox, yes? Are there any non-Sense based ROM's that have this feature? It's pretty important for as my phone is primarily my work device.

I'm doing this Root thing tonight. Trying to read up all I can this weekend on the whole process.

Thanks.

All I want is no more lag. haha. Not a lot of fancy stuff.

I'm using PlainJane 2.0 with an overclock of 710 MHz minus the HTC bloatware. Its just like stock but it flies. This is the way the phone should perform. I also use autokiller with a moderate to aggressive profile to keep unnecessary stuff from running. It works great!

So when I root, do I have to backup anything ? And if so how do I do that. I suppose my contacts will re-populate from my gmail account I am guessing ? Would I have to manually re-load my apps ? I am still chicken to root, but the lag is killing me. If I mess up any step can I just "do over" or am I screwed. Sorry for so many questions.

Thank you all!!

Can someone reccomend a ROM for a total novice. I just want it to work minus the lag nothing fancy or overclocking for now. Something that is comfortable to the original OS.

Thanks all Again !!

PlainJane 2.0

Yes - this is perfect for a beginner.

How do people feel about KoasFroyo or whatever?

I really like Kaos Froyo, but I still think that 2.1 ROMs perform better and are more feature-complete than the Froyo ROMs right now, which are all built from the Cyanogen source that is still being developed. That said, I have been using KF for 10 days straight now, without any issues.

I like Kaosfroyo too, but if you're really used to Sense, I'd stick with one of the sense-based ROMs. It's tough enough rooting, wiping, and reinstalling apps then moving up to a brand new OS that has no Sense connection at all is a big step if you already use your phone regularly for work. I used to play with other launchers and home styles before rooting, but Sense was always part of the core OS like with browser and other apps. Installing Froyo roms is like learning to use a Nexus One.

yes, contacts are synced to google. Titanium backup is almost imperative if you have more than a couple apps/settings to reload.

with the new 1-click root its really impossible to screw up. even with Erisuser1's previous root method (half a dozen steps) its easy and you can do-over at any step.

I may finally have to give a non-sense rom a serious try since the dialer/call lag is the only thing I have a real problem with.

Um, I rooted yesterday. I have not yet installed a rom but let me be the one whiner to say that since yesterday, the lag has been worse than ever. Yeah, I know: move on and install a good rom but being a noob, I'm nervous about making changes when the results so far have been less than stellar.

Root + xtrRom or xtrSense = no more lag! zero, none, nada.

xtrSense + JITs + apps2sd + 806mhz = no more lag.

This thing feels more like an Incredible, except that I hate how the capacitive touch buttons are hard to hit.

But the physical call/end buttons are super nice. Can't go without those.

Have you tried overclocking?

Haven't tried overclocking yet -- I've been reading the threads and trying to fully understand it first. I've always been a geek but I'm feeling a little out of depth with some of this.
As for roms, I'm hearing great things about the kaos froyo rom...but I like the sense ui. Suggestions for good sense based roms?

Once you're experienced xtrSense.
It's one of the only ROMs with the July Update.

Or flash Ivan's Eris_Official 1.0 and try doing the real OTA update.zip file.

I bet it takes to it just fine.

Ivan's is better than anything, really. Some will disagree.

I'm just using xtrRom because I didn't want to mess with the July Update update.zip. I will eventually though.

just rooting won't really get you anything except the *ability* to install roms, run tethering, setCPU, etc etc etc.

Most roms are OC'd by default. nandroid backup, flash a rom, and see. if you don't like it, just restore. I also like sense...so I go with xtrsense or senseable (which I love).

Edit: Tried Eris_Official 1.0 and the update.zip and it gets stuck in a bootloop VERY early on (android skateboards), and won't get past it.

I'm trying to modify the update.zip to work right, but keep getting an error # 6 when trying to flash my modified version.

I have a rooted D1, but as a work phone I carried a Blackberry. Couldn't stand the lag on the browser, almost wasn't worth paying for the data plan! I bought an Eris off eBay, had it a day, couldn't take it anymore and rooted. I am running KaosFroyo V30 with overclocking and it is actually almost close to my D1 in speed, of course with Overclocking. I was very uneasy about rooting at first, but with all the great support and all of the new, easier ways to do it, you can't go wrong. I just rooted my D1 in July and I got it in November. Will never be un-rooted again!

Just rooted yesterday and have EvilEris running on it and this phone is amazing again. Zero lag I've noticed.
