Root Okay... how impact does Root have on Eris lag, really?

Hi all... OP posting here. I Rooted my phone today. For a little review on the process and experiance, go back to my original post (#1).

In my experience at least, this is what I do:

1. Press and hold Vol Up
2. Press power until I see lights turning on, then let go of Power. That's usually not very long.
3. Once I see the skateboards, I let go of Vol Up. At that point, I know Recovery will start.
 
The way I like to word it is (from my PM to the OP):

"..with the device off and dark and cold, hold down the volume up key and then press and hold the power key until you see the three green trash cans (ok, "androids") then release and the recovery menu will come up."

^ Actually guys, I had to hold both until Recovery came up. Tried 2 times with no success. Weird. Oh well. I'm ROOTED!
 
One thing I've learned since I first came to these forums is that each Eris has its own individual personality. ;)

They seemed to have made sure of that at the manufacturing factory and assembly plants by putting each one together slightly differently. :D
 
Noobasaurs question here......(< referring to me) What does over clocking do to your battery life? If you run faster does the battery drain even faster?

Yep.

In most ROMs the difference between overclocking and not overclocking is reflected in the battery dramatically.

You'll see reports of some ROMs being a bit more friendly toward that, especially Froyo ROMs lately.

I recommend flashing xtrROMs for need less or no overclocking.

Ymmv. ;)
 
Okay... so here we go. I'm having some strange issues with this xtr 3.0.3 rom I flashed. First, Gmail is not in my app drawer. Can't find it anywhere. When I go to Menu > Settings > Accounts n Sync, it opens and then force closes! My Mail icon is there and appears to be sync'g with my office Exchange server just find. Secondly, when I go to the app drawer and launch the Calendar it force closes.

This is really strange given the fact that this ROM is so popular and stable. All I have done is root using hte 1 click method, and then flashed the xtrrom 3.0.3 (had it on my sd card).

I'm getting on a plane for a few hours but will be checking back here after I land.

Look in your sd card and you'll see a couple more zips that need to be flashed for the gmail and other sync stuff. Those zips were placed there by the xtrROM zip you flashed.

Just power down and go into recovery, then select "flash from zip.." and you'll find them on the menu that comes up.
 
FWIW, I flashed xtrsense 4 yesterday and am loving it. It's a Sense based ROM (I like sense and I've messed w/other 'home' programs, Launcher Pro, Helix, etc. and have always come back to sense, it's just comfortable to me).

I used the easy root method (not the one step).

I also was paranoid about messing something up, but it went very smooth.

I am sure I'm going to flash a froyo rom in the near future to try it out.
 
Here's my $0.02...

Recently did the one-click root and flashed KaosFroyo v30.

The only thing that really improved in performance was the dialer, but then that was the only major lag problem I had with stock 2.1.

Pros:
- Love the new dialer.
- Love the new virtual keyboard.

Cons:
- I've cobbled together enough widgets to replace most of the features I used from Sense. But they don't match - different backgrounds, margins, color schemes, etc. But hey, now it really looks like a Linux phone. ;-)
- I miss the gMail widget. Haven't found a decent replacement.

No change:
- Still no decent music player. Until it can autosync, and read VBR WMA's without conversion, I'm not wasting my time.
- Still haven't found a good ToDo list. I've settled on ToDo Task Manager, but I don't really like it.

YMMV.
 
You can get the gmail widget by flashing the zip file that adds back the google apps as Frisco mentioned above. Or, you can just go ahead and flash the latest version of xtrRom - it is out of beta and is smooth as silk, and includes the google apps without the additional step.

If you miss Sense there are a number of good, Sense based ROMs out there, including xtrSense. I also loved Sense but after messing with things (flashing probably 30 ROMS lol) I have found that I prefer my lean, clean phone running launcherpro better, but up to you.
 
That would probably work better if I had actually flashed an xtrROM. :) The .zips aren't in KaosFroyo, so far as I can tell. I tried downloading xtrSense 4.0.6 to see if I could pull the .zips directly out of it, but no joy there either. From the thread, it looks like they are now integrated.

Anyway, I miss Sense, but not THAT badly. I'll stick with Froyo. But if anyone knows of another source for the google apps, and whether or not they work on KaosFroyo v30, please let me know. Thanks.

EDIT: FYI, downloaded xtrROM 3.0.3 and pulled the .zips from there. Installed the Stock apps and Social sync. Made my phone very, very unhappy. Had to wipe, reflash KaosFroyo and Nandroid restore. (Yes, of COURSE I backed up right before I tried this ;-) Ah well, it was worth a shot.

Just FYI, for the future, you do not need to flash kaos froyo just before a Nandroid restore. Whatever you had on your device at the time of the backup will be restored. If you flash xtrROM and then do a Nandroid restore taken when you had kaos froyo, you will end up with kaos froyo in the state that it existed at the time of the backup.
