On .232 Considering just sticking with leaks

DRMMR02

Newbie
Now that the OTA release of ICS for the Bionic has been pushed back again, I'm considering just biting the bullet and flashing the latest .246 leak. I know that will bar me from going back to Ginger Bread and installing the official ICS OS.
My question is, what are the fixes and changes between ICS .232 and the current .246? Would I really be gaining anything noticeable by flashing the latest leak? I like ICS but it does have some very annoying features, such as the constant system notifications ("Select Input Method" and "Location set by GPS" are driving me crazy). Is it possible to fix that in later leaks? What other things are offered by leaks beyond .232 that would make the lastest leak useful?

does 232 run pretty good? I am running Handcent SMS on 230 and it crashes the app sometimes. I dont know if its the app or not though.

I use the stock messaging app which is very stable.

Overall the .232 leak has been extremely stable and dependable for me. So much so that I would be ok if an OTA was never pushed although I think it will be very soon.

From what I understood, I don't think getting onto one of the locked leaks means that you'll NEVER be able to get the official update or get your device back on the OTA path again, just that once the official update comes out, you might have to wait longer than everyone else while the devs figure out how to make it flashable for anyone who went onto the leaks. I might be wrong about that, but I didn't think there was any permanent consequence to going above .232, just that it will take some extra time and effort to figure out how to get back on track.

I myself have not gone beyond .232 as well and it's really hard to judge just by other people's descriptions whether going any further is worth it. It's all subjective to hear other people saying it seems smoother or more stable. That means something different from one person to the next. The only real concrete changes I have heard is that flash started working with leak .246 and that maybe GPS works better on newer leaks, although my GPS seems fine already and you can get flash working on .232.

I don't think there are any drastic changes that really warrant going above .232 at this point, with the official update supposedly coming out soon. But if you don't want to wait, it's probably not the end of the world either. The dev community always figures out ways around things.

Well, that's not certain. So far with all the higher than 232 leaks (except for 247, to new to know about it yet) people can use HoB (House of Bionic) and do something that will allow it to be upgraded. The problem is as those devs say, it all depends on what all Verizon insists on as far as locked files and such.

At this point I think if you are stock or .232 just wait another week or two before jumping and taking the chance.

My phone was acting up, and jumping signals... 1x to 3g back and forth. In my head I thought this is it! The OTA is here! I was so excited!

Alas..... :(

Maybe tomorrow. Sigh.

Para, I've seen the same thing the past couple of weeks, going to even 1x in what are normally strong 4G areas and of course some switching to 3G. I know it's not the phone that is the issue, has to be something on Verizon's side. Glad to know I am not alone.

I am usually in a 3G-only area. Thursday night/Friday morning I was in a 4G area. I saw this same switching going on. The download speed when it was at 4G was about 6M.

It's an ironic tug-of-war; with each day that goes by I get closer to just wanting to flash one of the locked leaks, yet with each day that goes by we get closer to whenever the OTA release will be and it would be smarter to wait for that.

I have the worst luck in the world. I could probably get everyone the official ICS update that they've been wanting if I just decided to flash one of the newer leaks, because surely the OTA would come out the next day lol.

I'm with you there.... I know if I in the leak route, next day official release goes OTA. lol.

If anyone needs it to rain, let me know and I'll wash my car... lol

Just to clarify a little bit -- if you are running a leak, say 247 which is currently the latest and greatest, when the OTA drops if it's the same version (247) then you are ALREADY back on the upgrade path, there's no need to flash back and install the OTA because it's the exact same code you are already running. In the unlikely event that the OTA is a different version, then yes the devs would need to find a way to get us there, but with the House of Bionic that is almost trivial at this point. The security changed with 235 so if the OTA was a version below that, it would be a problem, but since VZW rejected those builds it's extremely unlikely. Consensus at this point is that 247 will be the OTA, but of course nothing is guaranteed.

Consensus is actually that the final OTA will be of the same security version as 235+ meaning that with HoB you'll still be able to take the real OTA over a current 235+ leak.

As for when it goes live - I've not yet received a SOAK invitation from Motorola so it is at minimum 2 days away (which was how long the last soak for .905 lasted).

If you're on .232 or lower, you are on the OT path, just need to revert to .905 via FXZ.

If you're on .235+ you'll need HoB.

There is a small snowball's chance in hell (like 0.001%) that the security will change in the final OTA, rendering HoB useless - in that case, you'll still be able to flash any of the .235+ leaks and wait until the FXZ for the OTA is released, usually 4-6 weeks after the OTA is released.

It's really a win-win situation to go ahead and take a .235+ leak, but I still recommend against it, just in case there *IS* some other big flap in the final release that breaks a lot of things like with the RAZRs - until you take that final OTA, you can always revert to .905.

As I understand it, even if they move to a new security, the HoB will still work. It's only if they revert to the older, Pre-235 security that HoB would break. And that indeed is a snowball's chance in hell. ;)

Technically incorrect. If they move to a new security, it may work, but it may not.

The security I'm referring to is in the CDT.bin file - currently, it is what is preventing people from reverting to a working, bootable .905 build.

If we were to get a new leak / final OTA with a new (read: incremented) CDT.bin security, we theoretically should be able to use HoB to install it - but if the final OTA script actually checks for the version of the CDT.bin that is already on the phone, we get hosed, b/c we cannot install the one it will be looking for - installing the previous CDT.bin after having updated to .235+ on your phone breaks on boot, even when booting directly into the bootloader. I am the one that tested trying to revert .235 down to .905 extensively. If you leave out the CDT.bin (which is one of the things that HoB leaves out as it does not factor into the updater-script) you can flash the other components of .905 and fool the updater-script in the leak / OTA into thinking that you have a valid .905 system (which has the right files, even though there is a mismatch between the bootloader, CDT.bin, etc., so it is unable to boot) and allow the upgrade to proceed.

I'm pretty sure you know all this already, but I'm reiterating it for the benefit of all the readers of this thread.

As I said, there is a very unlikely chance that this will happen, but the chance does exist - which is the ONLY reason I am not advocating everyone throw caution to the wind and install .247. Otherwise, if there were a guaranteed way to make sure you could take the OTA when it came out no matter what leak you were on, I'd be pushing everyone onto the latest every single time.

Agreed, this is the reason I never advise anyone to go beyond 232. Although I have chosen to take the risk. Thanks for spelling it all out.

A little rule town about 50 miles away from me that I usually visit 2 or three times a month finally got 4G turned on, i noticed it Friday.

Agreed. .246 is the best of the 235+ series. Since you've already taken the plunge to .235, might as well make it .247.

Very informative posts everyone, thanks. Gives me even more to think about.

Edit: Had a boring morning. Went to .247. Now we'll see if my bad luck brings out the official OTA within the next two days!
