I am sending this post from my computer, which is wi-fi teathered to my rooted prevail. Good job!! You have my thanks, and my email address, which you may find useful. I'm too broke to donate right now, but I'm a bad arse when it comes to making SEO happen. hit me back when you guys need some work, I would be more than happy to donate a few hours each week for a while. this was worth it, so lemme know what your workin on and i'll set a few computers to spinning and pinging. oh and if you have windows set to automatically search for updates to software, it will auto install the drivers for some reason :P maybe that will help some of you. just make sure to have an active internet connection when rooting and use win7 (not that win 7 starter either, it won't work).

Did you have to tweak anything to get your computer to connect to tether? I see the AdHoc network but my Win7 laptop (Dell 15R I3) will not connect. Any ideas.

I rooted my Prevail without any problems. Thanks to all. How do I turn it into a wireless hotspot? I don't see the option anywhere.

I downloaded the root zip file and it and when I open the Prevailtoexsistatence.bat file it says
Killingmesoftly is missing. I have deleted and redownloaded. opened with windows zip
I have tried the torrent and downloaded a program to run it and still same error. I am sure whatever I am doing wrong is basic but I cant figure it out.

I had no problem rooting my phone but have tried at least 10 times so far with my wife's Prevail and won't accept. When I run the program it gives me messages that install of busybox, etc. unsuccessful. I'm using the same laptop, etc. Any ideas?

reboot the phone i had the same issue but when i rebooted the phone it worked like a charm.

Do most of you Backup your phone before you attempt to root or flash? I have not been up to now. Not a really big deal because I just got the phone and am new to Android. But...Now that it is rooted and flashed up to .6 I am using the phone for some productive stuff besides jsut a toy. So, I need to backup.

I don't have the patience to learn Titanium although I am sure it is the best. I decided to try MyBackup Pro (root). I tested this today and it worked. Here is what I did:

Ran Launcher Pro Backup
Ran Smart Keyborad Backup
Ran MyBackup and selected ALL Applications and Media
Ran MyBackup and selected ALL Data

Then I did a Factory Reset to Wipe it.

I played around with it in this state just to see what was still there.

I signed into Market and it got my Contacts and Calendar from Google.

I downloaded MyBackup from Market.

It automatically downloaded updates to Maps and Gmail also.

I Restored ALL Applications and Media
I Restored ALL Data

It requested a device reboot after each of these two steps.

I restored the Smart Keyboard Settings
I restored the Launcher Pro Settings

I had to redo the widgits but the app shortcuts were there.

I went into Market and set each app for auto updates, this seems to have disappeard for some reason.

Everything works great, possibly a little snappiier than before because of the wipe. Probably a good idea to do this every so often anyway.

In retrospect there are some things I would do differently:
I would have a copy of MyBackup on the SD so I could install from there instead of the Market.

I should have skipped restoring Contacts and Calendar as those got synced from Google anyway. This caused duplicates that MyBackup alerted me about and deleted. I could have skipped backing them up in the first place.

I did not do a good job of documenting it but I think I picked up a few mb of space also. by doing the wipe and restore.

This makes me feel ready for ShabbyMod .7 and will save a lot of redundant work.

How do you use Titanium Backup? Is it better?

So today I got the message on my phone that the update is downloaded, and to click for install. I am rooted and don't want the update. Can someone tell me where the download file was place (and its name)? I assume I can either move it or delete it to be safe from the update?

Also, If I do not click on install, will it install anyway? Or keep pestering me to install?

---EDIT: Okay, I found the update zip file in the cache directory. So, can I move or delete the file? Is this safe? And if so, will the update messages stop after that?

It should be safe to remove the file. The only way I know to avoid the pestering to update is to put shabbymod 6 on the phone. It will run so much better anyways. ;)

I've been holding off on the Shabbymod until there is a way to backup the original ROM (Just in in case of emergency)

Couldn't rename or delete the update zip file I found in cache, and the more I read about it, didn't seem like it would solve the constant nagging to update anyway. I installed AUTOSTARTS, and disabled the update that way instead. Seems to be working fine so far.

There is not a way to back up your original rom, but shabby has a unroot, which uses an original rom though at the moment he is working on it again, so its not available to download.

Hey guys can someone tell me how to fix this please, everytime I try to do this root I get a file copy error. Any help is appreciated, thanks

Have you tried rebooting and on reboot when the samsung logo flashes you start the one click root operation on your computer? I had to this when I rooted mine.
