Help Only ever use Wifi for data/internet etc?

I've recently got a Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360 and would like to know if there is a setting that allow me to restrict the phone to only going online, downloading stuff etc through the wifi connection and not through my mobile phone connection.

I am on pre-pay and the first time I topped up my account the data transfers I was doing ate right through my credit when I thought it was using my wifi connection!

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You can disable the "mobile data" option... but another "program" (battery saver, etc..) can enable this automatically without ask you...
I got some fck Billing from my 3g service with this...
and to be really secure, I went in the "gsm settings" of my chip
and put some a bad_address in the domain that connects my 3g internet service.

for example:
go to > wifi
and open "mobile network"
now open "access point"
click in your "cellular provider"
and go to "APN"
i see my APN address = myprovider.com
and i changed to a "bad address" = 123456myprovider.com

so now I really secure that my cellular CANT connect to internet using 3G,
no more undesired bills in my account..

Yup
go to :
settings > wireless&networks > mobile networks

unlink mobile data !
you are done :)

Thanks for the tips! I'm afraid of how much my initial bill would be! I thought I was only using my home wi-fi but it was on mobile at times without my knowledge!!!

Yup
go to :

unlink mobile data !

hello,
I don't have 'mobile data' in my settings> wireless&networks > mobile networks
This is what I have
>Use packet data
>Data roaming
>access point names
>use only 2G networks
>network operators
Which is the one I should uncheck so it doesn't eat my credit because I'm also on PayasyouGo.

Hello Uxxize,

This happened to me and after reading the small phone manual, I thought all I had to do was to enable Flight Mode to stop the phone logging onto to the internet, but this was not right and the phone used GPS to upgrade the applications that had come with the phone. All my payasyougo credit was gone. Luckily my mobile provider could see I hadn't used the internet and so they credited my money back to me. At the same time I was taken through the phone applications and told to uncheck 'packet data', I was then told the same thing by a friend and so far it's worked. This will also stop the phone from accessing the internet automatically if you travel abroad. I now only use my home wi-fi to access the interent.

Hope this helps you can use your phone with confidence.

Best wishes

thanks sonjaday, i was guessing that 'packet data' and 'mobile data ' were the same thing, maybe it depends what country you live in as to what it's called mobile or packet data, i thought flight mode meant no internet access/ no data use aswell, so thanks for telling me that.
I think they make it hard for people to understand these things so we all spend loads on phone credit all the time having no idea where all this credit is going ha ha .
Alot of people on the samsung website/ FAQ section have commented that the little booklet that comes with the phone is useless .

The problem is with turning packet data off is that you cannot recieve or send MMS messages.
You have to turn it back on to see your picture message.
I had to do this and my phone sneakily went online and I was charged

I have been searching the net and found these settings for MMS only.

1 Push the menu button and pick Settings
2 Pick "Wireless & networks"
3 Pick "Mobile networks"
4 Make sure "Use Packet Data" is checked (MMS won't work if you disable it!)
5 Go to "Access Point Names"
6 On my phone, the only APN here was named "ATT (wap.cingular)"
7 Scroll down to the "APN type" setting.
8 On my phone, the original value for this setting was "default, supl, mms"
9 Change its value to be only "mms".
10 Push the menu button and pick "Save."

I have tried these settings and they do work, just make sure you do the changes in the right order. I can now send and recieve MMS but cannot connect to the internet so no data charges.

The only differences in my settings were :-

6 My APN was o2 WAP PREPAY
8 Original setting was INTERNET + MMS

I think the reason why it didn't work the last time I tried this was that I had packet data OFF and put it ON when I had changed to MMS only.

You have to have it on before you change the APN type.

Hope this helps.
