Opened a 'case' with AT&T!

I just called AT&T about my Captivate because it froze on me during a medical emergency. I'm fine, but I nearly lost my mind because my phone shouldn't do that. If only phones were as reliable as old flip phones running stable OS's. Remember the Samsung Sync anyone? Probably the best phone I ever owned.
So I get through like 4 people to finally get someone in the resolutions department because I want a new phone - not another Captivate. The gentleman there was monotone and dry and I'm pretty sure he hated people, told me that because I hadn't replaced a phone before, I couldn't do it now... This makes NO sense to me. Because I've never had a problem or complained before, they won't do it now?
So I pushed a little harder and now it's climbed this ladder of management way higher than it needed to go.
Is it worth it to fork out a new phone? They are contacting me on Monday to resolve the issue (hopefully).

Other than that though, I've reset my phone to factory defaults and it seems to be running like a champ. Maybe they just need to be cleaned out every once in awhile?

Basically, you answered your own question. If you want a simple phone that is not going to give you any problems, then purchase a simple flip phone. Every single smart phone I have owned; BackFlip, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, Captivate, Blackberry 9000, 9700, etc has given me some sort of problem that requires a reboot...it is the nature of owning and using a smart phone.

+1

Agree 100%

That is the nature of smartphone. Sometimes they need a reboot. It's not like the phone knew you were having a medical emergency and said let me piss this guy off and freeze.

What if your car needed gas during this emergency you going to complain to the manufacturer that its unacceptable that your car require gas during an emergency

Maybe you can find a nice vintage Motorola StarTac on ebay that would better suit your emergency needs.

It may not hurt to keep a cheapie flip on hand to swap sims in an emergancy. I have a handful of "spares" laying around an maintain a minimal charge on them. Smartphones can be testy at times.

With smartphones talking takes a backseat to all the other stuff like surfing the web and apps. It's the nature of the beast and they all have quirks when it comes to talking.

The other thing you could do is this.... Sell your Cappy - They are still going for ~$200 used. Take that, and look online or on Craigslist for a new phone of older vintage - Swap your SIM card and boom - you're done.

That's not entirely true. I've had my captivate for 6 months at least, and it has never froze up on me. I also have a blackberry curve, and that thing freezes up like every day. I also use a a htc touchpro2 from sprint, and it does glitch up at times, but it doesn't freeze up on me. Sorry to negate you, but I also turn my devices off after everyday maybe that's why. idk

You don't even need to swap sims if you are dialing 911, most phones will let you dial 911. That's not a bad idea, I have a motorola krzr that I keep around for just that. You never know what might happen and you might need a different phone.

Seriously, get a flip phone, Nokia, or something. Casio makes tough phones, the Tundra and Rugby rock. Using a smart phone sets you up for issues; the Captivate, doubly so.

So you have never had a force close on any application on your Captivate, ever? I would say that restarting your phone daily would 100% cut down on the possibility of the phone freezing. I think it is just funny to see people who get all worked up when a Smart Phone glitches. I challenge them to leave there Windows or even Mac computer on for two weeks straight and come back and tell me how good it runs....

I've had me phone since September... never force closed any app either. Well, that was until I got 2.2 last week, and now a rash of force closes on K-9, Messaging...

Oh, challenge accepted. My Dell work laptop is on 24/7/365. Never had a problem.

Maybe they should rename these to Smart DEVICES! People think these are still phones! I haven't touched my laptop at home in over a year because of this Device! Oh and I make calls once in a while too. Being that it is a mini-laptop, it needs re-booting and cleaning up just like a laptop would.
I have a refurb, 1007 build, rooted and flashed with Paragon RC6...no shut-downs, GPS is like my shadow, and is FAST!

I know this is an old post, and I just wanted to add that your the one that's getting all worked up. It's been about seven months since I posted something on this thread and I've gone though several flashes about 60 trying new roms. I have never encountered a force close until gingerbread 2.3.4. my phone app force closes once in a while, but it works ok for the most part. Maybe you got a defective unit.

So your Dell laptop never gets updates from Microsoft for 365 days straight? Microsoft issues monthly updates that usually require reboots.
