Root Optimus V Rooting,Roms,Tutorials thread

If you are looking for an easy way to root your Optimus V, look on Android Central. Search for Romtools. IMO it is the easiest method to use. In one click it will root, install su, and your custom recovery. You can also flash a custom rom or boot animation, all with just a few clicks. Just make sure to read the instructions and rename the recovery file to "vrecovery". This was my first time rooting and I had no problems at all. Oh, and to be safe, before you flash a new rom, make sure you make a backup. If this helps, please thank the dev who took the time to make this easier on all of us.

i may have done something wrong, but i rooted my optimus v using the meethod #1 in the first post and i can no longer get data via cellular network. any tips? i followed the steps perfectly, did not flash a custom ROM. is there something that i need to dial or a radio firmware update??

I should have been more patient, when I woke up this morning, data connectivity has been restored...not sure why, it just took a while.

There's LOTS of useful information here, and thanks to the links in this thread I actually learned ABOUT ROMs and rooting rather than simply learning the directions how to do it. Thank you to all the wonderful contributions, this thread is a great wealth of knowledge.

I still haven't messed with my phone, though. Why not? Because I can't decide on which ROM to use - there are many listed in this thread but there's really no side-by-side comparison. Is there a "best" one?

Look here for a list of the various recoveries and roms for the V. It gives a lot of info on the roms and the links to them. It also lists many of the tweaks and performance improvement

In method two, when it says to run SuperOneClick, is that "ROOT" or "SHELL ROOT". I know that "ROOT" is used to establish a permanent root(which I need to do if I'm going to customize the "V"), but is that the case with the "V"? Do I instead need to run "SHELL ROOT", which is why there's the command prompts that have to be utilized? I've all ready bricked one "V" by using a method that must not have been compatible, can't afford to brick this one(still researching how to unbrick the first "V")

I was trying to post a direct reply to the tut. "Rooting and installing ADB" and somehow wound up here. If anybody knows the answer it would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Forgive the newbness but can I perform the rooting on a linux box?

And thank you asadullah for your contribution.

Here is a good article for rooting from linux:
Rooting a Samsung Fascinate with Ubuntu Linux

It is written for a Samsung Fascinate, but a few small changes it will work on other phones. I rooted my Optimus M this way. I have not tried it with the Optimus V. If nothing else, it will at least help you with getting the Android SDK and ADB setup on your Linux machine.

Thank you so much for this highly informative and helpful thread. I'm stuck, though, and am wondering if I could get some help.

I've rooted the Optimus V, installed recovery clockwork mod, and want to put the asop mod on there. I booted into recovery, wiped the data and cache, and then installed the asop from zip. The installation goes really quickly (not the 20 minutes that I'm told it will take). I boot up and it's clearly not gingerbread.

Some more info: I only flash the "GApps" zip file from this page: [ROM][WIP][ALPHA] aospCMod | AOSP 2.3.4 / CM7+ (Gingerbread) - xda-developers and not the img file. Is that what I should be doing? If not, what should I do with the img file?

Any suggestions?

Okay if you have clockworkmod recovery then you need to use a formatdebug.zip that is with most roms i know they say that you dont but everytime i have not used it i get boot loops and a far as the gapps.zip thats all you need to flash no img file a img file is usaly a recovery but i run aosp cm7 v2.3.4 and all i did was boot into recovery and do a factory reset/wipe then cleared the dalvik cache then flashed the formatdebug.zip then the aosp.zip and then flash the gapps and you should be good if it does not look like gingerbread try to redownload the rom becuse that is part of the theme kit cm7 has a theme chooser and it sounds like all the files are not there i hope this helps

if you're only flashing GAPPS, then you're not actually flashing the ROM. Gapps is only the google apps. you need to flash the aosp zip, which should be about 48MB.

Right now there are several roms that can be used on the optimus v and some that are made specifically for the optimus v. I'll only list the ones made directly for the optimus v:

1) Stock Rom here
2) Pure Android here
3) Rhodimus Rom here
4) Stock Overclocked Rom here
5) AOSP's gingerbread Rom here
6) Zefies cm7 build here
7) Mobius Rom here
8) Aphrodite 1.x here
9) Aphrodite 2.x here
10) ZOMG! here
This is all that are available as of 3/31/11 If I missed some then pm me with the link and I'll post it

The aosp rom file is a zip. I don't have the link handy, just do a search for
aospcmod 7-vm670-20110601.zip

any one know what to do when your recovery wont do anything other than boot into recovery? it wont perform any of its native functions in recovery, not even turn the phone back off, i have to battery pull to exit recovery EDIT: disregusrd. the phone went swimming in the sewer today. looks like it doesnt matter now lol.

I followed your videos and everything yesterday worked like a charm! if people are having trouble just watch the videos and read and pay attention. he lays everything out.

I've read ALL of asadullah's how to's and watched ALL of his videos. I'm totally new to Linux and android when it comes to modding. I know absolutely nothing. And after reading his posts repeatedly and watching his videos over and over and over...i still know nothing. He must assume the end user has some knowledge of what he's talking about. It was like another language to me. Nothing explained. Also his command prompts to put into cmd are NOT copy and paste'able, not sure where he got that from. Also by entering it as he has it, it won't work. He's either missing a character or added an unnecessary character or added/missing a space. So it's incomplete. I like how everyone says it's so easy, yet i've had to download about 15 things just to do one thing to my cell...then another 10 things to install the rom. Which didn't work. It seems everyone i talk to who has android and roots and installs roms and such doesn't follow this guide do to the page long steps just to get one thing going. They use other guides that are more up-to-date and where the OP keeps in contact with what they create and doesn't just ditch it. Kinda sad someone with knowledge about this decides to make numerous threads and "how-to's" and videos, replies for about 2 weeks, then disappears.

So thanks asadullah for your incomplete "how-to". And i suppose i'll be looking elsewhere with more extensive information and videos that actually explain details and is active in their own creations.

Also like the OP i won't be checking in on this thread from time to time, nor will i be checking my messages.
