Root Optimus V rooting

So I'm completely new to this android rooting thing. I know how to jailbreak iPhone. I have a lg optimus v. I want to put gingerbread on it. I have read some post having problem with wifi and mms when they root optimus v. So is there any root rom in which there is no such problem. If yes, then can please anyone give me a step by step guide on how to root my phone and install 2.3 gingerbread on it with wifi and mms?
