Help Optimus V to Win XP tethering challenges

faulty

Lurker
My provider is Virgin Mobile. My phone may soon be my only "private" internet connection. I have tried the following to get cyanogen mod 7 (gingerbread) to tether to windows XP: Followed the instructions at Android Devices: Tethering and Portable Wi-Fi Hotspots - Google Mobile Help (my xp says that the download "does not contain any device formatting files" and therefore will not install); Downloaded the LG drivers for Optimus V; followed the advice given for an Optimus S and downloaded the LG drivers using singapore country as the country and a different model; Downloaded "android-wired-tether; tried "Easy tether".
I have it showing up in "phones and modem", on the xp, as being connected to com 5 but the check-box on the Optimus greys out. It comes back to white by itself thanks to the addition of the "Android-wired-tether" but the box has unchecked itself by that point.
I may not know much yet but you gotta admit I have heart.

Please don't take this wrong. Discussion on the topic of tethering goes against the site rules and the Virgin Mobile "Terms of Service".
Thank you for your understanding on this subject.
