Orange 2.2 update

I had an unbranded Desire that died in the sea that was running Froyo. I have now got a replacement that is branded Orange and running 2.1, the truth is i dont recall much difference except for the flashlight, tethering and one or two other things.
The key was the whole move to SD card thing for the apps.

Other than that nothing worth getting hard over tbh.

So i called orange today and they said that it was out yesterday for a shortwhile. But due to problems with htc's servers, they had to stop it. It will be all good to go on wednesday and we will be getting a text msg saying that the update is ready.

Is that Wednesday next week??

Probably another fairytale though anyway.

Bet they can't confirm which Wednesday. :)

01:30 and multiple checks but still no update. Busy servers my botty! There is a better chance of finding a single, living, intelligent brain cell in Wayne Rooneys head than there is of getting the 2.2 update from Orange.

their CS must have had 100s of calls and not one straight answer given.

Been trying for 20 minutes clicking on check now. No updates! Blaming shitty Orange and HTC.

Result: One unhappy customer who the companies do not care about.

I wouldn't go that far. Orange have hundreds of customer service staff who's job it is to purely solve customer issues. You have to put this issue in to perspective. It's a small software update. Your phone and service as it stands works fine, so apart from a little frustration at having to wait a bit, there isn't really a problem.

If you want a problem, consider me. There's a mast down in my area meaning I can't receive calls all during September. Now that's an issue.

I got my Desire on Orange back in June and went on holiday to devon that night. Phone worked perfectly during my fortnights holiday. I get home and find I get no service at my house and basically can't use the phone at home. I had checked Orange's coverage checker on their website before I got the phone and it said excellent service at my house and my postcode.
Because I didn't return the phone during the 1st 14 days of my contract I am now stuck on orange for the full 18 months and say they can't do anything about it. They tell me the coverage checker is a guidline only and they can't guarantee indoor service, but my phone hardly works anywhere outdoors on my street!!
Love the phone and it works perfectly anywhere except for my postcode!!

How is T-Mobile's coverage in your area? Hopefully things will be better for you when can use both networks.

Have you tried just using 2g? I've been having massive problems with 3g coverage. If you manually force the phone to 2g that seems to solve the coverage problem, but of cause you dont get 3g coverage.

settings >wireless and networks> mobile networks> Network mode> GSM only

Then back to mobile networks> Network operators> search networks and hopefully Orange should appear and let you manually select it.

Hope that helps.

Its also worth finding out of they have any masts down in your area so you can get money off your bill. Dont pay for something your not receiving.

Yep! the auto 3G/2G on my Desire does not appear to work very well. Found that I was not getting basic coverage in loads of places around London where my previous Nokia worked until I discovered that manually switching to 2G would suddenly make my phone work again.

There are apps for the switch that make it simpler but I have to say that the phone is not as smart as my old N82 in this respect.

I have found i get slightly better service if i switch to GSM only but its still hardly useable. And its hassle keep changing it everytime i'm at home and like i said to Orange thats no use for surfing the net etc..
I have been in contact with them since July and they have told me about 5 different stories about different masts being down and it will be perfect shortly

I got escalated to level 2 care and they assured me my problem would be sorted by end of August but nothing happened. They won't offer me a discount off my monthly bill because I already get a discount through phones4u on my bill. They now tell me I have to live with it but the coverage checker on their website still shows full coverage in my area!!!!

Are you getting money off your bill?

Well, the CS woman's first recommendation was that I move.

After I laughed loudly down the phone at that suggestion, she added 300 minutes on to my bill to cover the fact I have to call everyone back. would have preferred money off as I now have 1000 minutes that I'm never going to use up.

Hello,

My OTA download was available on Monday but failed (possibly because I didn't have enough free space on my phone mem) and I haven't received the option to restart again since. Software update doesn't detect any new updates and I'm still running 2.1 (unrooted phone). Anyone else have a similar experience? Anyway to start the update again or will I just have to wait?

Thanks

I was obvisouly very lucky...I read on the Orange Forums that it was out on Monday evening, and managed to get the download pretty quickly. The only reason I wanted the update was to get portable hotspot...and sod's law if that's the only thing that doesn't buggering well work.

Tweeted @orangehelpers who said Orange would help if I called 150. 150 told me there's nothing they could do to help me. Now waiting for HTC to sort me out.

Wonderful.

I contacted HTC asking about their servers only to be told that the problem is definatly orange and it is comming from Orange servers not HTC ones. Spoke to CS at orange and got told it is definatly a HTC problem. Had enough contacted Tom Alexander to say sort it out this is bad and not good for orange.

Apparently on twitter orange have pulled the update.

Orange have finally revealed how the update is being phased here.

Edited highlights if you don't want to follow the link:

If you are running software version number 1.22.61.1 then you already can update your device to Android 2.2 (2.17.61.2).

If you are running software version number 1.15.61.10 then HTC has recently advised us you will first need to update your devices to 1.22.61.1.

HTC will be making the 1.22.61.1 update available early next week. Once you have updated to 1.22.61.1, you can then update to 2.17.61.2 via the method described above
