Orange 2.2 update

Hi Newbie here :)

Just bought an HTC Desire about 3 weeks ago (unbranded but on Orange contract) ... a few days ago an update showed up on my phone to be downloaded ... didn't take much notice of what it was (was vaguely aware there was a 2.2 update coming out) ... downloaded update via wifi at home .. ever since then I have completely lost wifi - shows up as 'error' all the time in all wifi settings menus  ... any comments as to how I can reinstate my wifi would be much appreciated.

If i debrand using this method, will i have to keep an spare SD card to use as a gold card to get future updates, or once its done, will i be able to use the phone and update as normal?

Cheers

You DO need to keep the sd card (gold card) very safe to use for future updates.
Or you can copy your original sd card to your PC, make this into the gold card and then copy all the stuff back when you have updated to 2.2.
Your phones sd card will then act as the gold card for any future updates.

It's all explained in the guide linked to in my original post anyway.
:)

Hi,

I posted this on Xda developers forum.

I hope it helps.

I couldn't wait either.

I've been following this thread for weeks. I have phoned Orange and HTC several times for information about the 2.2 (Froyo) update only to be told something different and more confusing each time.

In my experience and from the accounts of others in various android forums Orange and HTC seem to have been universally unhelpful since the update was announced in August.

I wouldn't be surprised if Orange, HTC or whoever is responsible today, never make Froyo available to those of us with the old 1.15.61.10 firmware.

I had had enough yesterday and finally de-branded using this link posted by ketledesire on page 27 of Froyo Orange 2.2 update.

http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/blog...e-update-froyo

I used the Updated Newer and simpler debrand method (halfway down page 4)

It was very easy to follow and I now have 2.2 with no Orange bloatware!

I have been able to transfer 14 MB of apps to the SD card (eventually most apps will be able to be stored on SD too)

There were no problems with loosing WiFi (in the updated method, once you have created the Gold card you update directly to Froyo from the Rom downloaded to your PC by USB cable.

The new Wifi Hotspot tethering works perfectly.

The new flashlight (torch) is brilliant!

The video recorder now has 720 HD recordings well.

Here are a few points that may help anyone doing this.

I found it helpful to print the above de-branding guide so that I could follow it exactly and see the the helpful comments at the end.

Use windows 7 to create the gold card if any problems with XP (I had some net 2.0 issues)

Make sure that you re-format the gold card and start again if you get any error messages or anything goes wrong at this stage.

Format your micro SD card by plugging it directly in your PC (it takes ages if you leave it in your phone and plug it in with the USB cable).

Keep checking that Debugging is ON on your phone at each step (It went off sometimes on mine)

Use XP to transfer the Froyo ROM to your phone if you keep getting "Administrator" issues with windows 7.

Also, as stated in the guide ,"use charge only mode" on your phone when flashing the 2.2 ROM. I was worried this was a typo, but it's not.

Most importantly take you SIM card out when flashing the 2.2 ROM.
When completed. Turn your phone off and put that nasty little Orange SIM card back in.
During the boot process your phone asks you if you would like to use Orange network.
Put the last few weeks behind you and agree.
Hey Presto, it should continue to boot up.

This way, whilst your phone will not be unlocked you will not have to pay for an unlock code.

Forgive me if I am teaching some of you to suck eggs. I have never done anything like this before and found it a bit daunting.

I hope all of you still waiting for Froyo are more convinced to re-brand.

GO FOR IT!
:)

PS: I used Mybackup Pro (on Android Market) to backup and restore all my data (including bookmarks, setting, etc) and apps.
It is very easy to use and wll worth the USD 4.99. Worked a treat. No problems.

Thanks for this. I'm thinking of following your guide. If I debrand will I be able to download future updates simply OTA from HTC, or do I have to flash every time there is an update? Also, am I likely to get found out if I try to claim under warranty?

hey all, i have a black htc desire on orange contract, with unlimited internet, i am a complete novice at this so here goes, will debranding and removing the orange internet app remove my unlimited internet?

any help would be hugely appreciated

Just to let anyone know. If you are on 1.22.61.1 and you have not received an update. The guys over at xda have got a manual download for the update.

What about those of us stuck on 1.15.61.10 ? .. Is there a manual (official) URL to get the update to 1.22.61.1 ?

yes it would be nice to know if there was a manual update for this, i am also on 1.15, when you say there is a manual update, is it the orange fw or just the generic htc one?

Just sent emails to both Orange & HTC regarding the update to 1.15.61.10. Will advise what their replies are.

J.

I did that a few days ago, stil waiting for an email back from Orange and HTC said Orange and HTC are working on the software update, and don't have a date as yet. Phoned Orange up last night and spoke to 2nd line support who also didn't have any idea when this software update will be out.

No there isn't a manual update to the new software for us. But if someone with the new software could do a nandroid backup us rooted users could get froyo

What annoys me is not simply that the update is delayed (bad stuff happens every day), but that no one from Orange (or HTC) has bothered to keep people updated. Someone knows exactly what the problem is and how to fix it, as well as the timescale. It's the contempt for their customers that bothers me. I'm not entirely convinced that any other service provider would have handled this issue a whole lot better than Orange, but it sure doesn't endear them to me.

I also can't believe that the marketing people at Orange don't read these forums - it has to be a part of their job. So, why can't one of them put their head above the parapet, speak to their top management and inform us.

I can handle "the update was delayed because we hadn't done our homework properly and you'll be getting 1.22 next Tuesday, with the 2.2 five days later, etc..."; but to leave *everyone* expecting an update and then telling some who'd been checking over a hundred times a day that, in fact, it couldn't have worked, because you're handset isn't ready is quite sick.

Although a software update on my phone obviously isn't the most important thing going on, it becomes bigger, when you feel like a sucker and then some of us (me included) become a little obsessed with it...

So, come on Orange, we can take it - what's the deal?!

Hey all, long time lurker first time poster, etc..

Like many others, I am stuck on 1.15.61.10 on an Orange branded Desire and unable to update. I emailed HTC about it this morning and for once didn't get a stock reply. Here is the reply I received:

orange and htc are working together to get the 1.22.61.1 update out. out to the orange customers so they can recieve the 2.2 ota later on. basicaly you are waiting for an update before the 2.2 update, it will come (ota) over the air like a message. the update is being made by orange at this moment in time and yes htc are helping them with this. but there is no official time release of yet. please keep checking oranges website and htc website for further information on the update. sorry i cannot help any further on this matter at this time.

So it basically looks to me like HTC and Orange are having to validate a version of 1.22.61.1 with all the usual Orange bloatware crap, so it can be pushed out to 1.15.61.10 users, who then will be able to update to 2.2 finally. No timeframe yet, I bet it could be weeks. Aarrgh.

Very frustrating this, especially as we were all expecting it last week after the official announcement. It's the lack of information, and disinformation ('early this week') that really annoys me. If I knew what was actually going on or how long I had to wait I wouldn't mind so much.

I desperately need the apps to sd function as I'm having to delete loads of apps at the moment to create space.

The way this has been handled is a joke.

That message is direct from orange, of course given their track record it's truth can very legitimately be questioned!

I'll not be staying up but will likely be checking in the small hours when I'm up in the night with my month old daughter!

Just read that on the Orange forums as well, so fingers crossed then!!

Will be giving Fifa11 a good bashing tongiht, so will check when big ben strikes 12!

Just did another "check now" (I'm on 1.5/black) and I have an update available, of around 27MB. I've elected to use WiFi only, so I'll get it when I get home from work. Looks like the servers have been given a laxative... :)
