When i use a USB extension cable to add length i cant connect my phone to my pc. The message says it doesn't reconize the device,WHAT. what device its just a cable.

Yeah, but the signal (electrons) must travel the length of the cable...

I'm guessing that it's an impedance thing (I'm not an electrical geek, but I think that's the right term ;) :p) and there's just not enough signal to make the two connect/talk (properly) outside of a certain distance.

Well Sir @scary alien, I am an electrician & you ARE correct. Ac voltage does that too but DC voltage (phones, laptops, USB, ect..) is especially bad about it. [emoji41]

As for "what device", the device is the phone, but because of the cable you are using the computer isn't able to communicate with it properly and hence doesn't know what type of device it is.

Thanks to all . Would a powered usb hub work?

I'm not an electronics expert, so while the powered hub certainly provides more power down the power connections I don't know whether it sends a stronger signal down the data lines. It certainly improves the chances, but if you connect the same long cable to a powered hub I don't guarantee that it will work better.

The truth is that microUSB cables vary in quality too. The most expensive one I ever bought actually only works for charging, even though it's the same length as most of my others (the only reason I didn't take it back was that it did at least allow me to use the one from the charger for data connections, so in that sense it did what I'd wanted).
