Root [OUDHS] Clockworkmod Recovery 1.0.3.4

I have never done a backup on my phone before. And, I'm not familiar with Nandroid backups. I need some instruction, a place, in order to get started.

just go into recovery, backup & restore, restore to ex_sdcard and then youll have a folder on your ex sdcard called clockwork mod/backups.
then when youre ready to restore, just go to restore from ex sdcard and choose your backup

What I need is someone who has my phone or understands it. And, can provide some steps, 1,2, ... and so on. Or, a reference to a tutorial. i.e. I have Titanium Backup [TB] Pro. Could this help me?

Well flashing is somewhat a leap of faith. But once you have recovery on your phone, it should be some sailing from there. After its on your phone just go to backup/restore.
Backup to external SD card and wait
After that you're all set.

TB will help if you are going to be flashing different ROMs.

Hope it goes well

That's because the recovery is generating HUGE backup images. My backup image size is 1.8GB, and that's with only a few apps. If you have an external SD card (hopefully 4GB or better), go into backup and restore, and select 'backup to external SD card'. And make sure there's room LOL

I have been going back and re-reading everything here in this thread. I think my problem is that I don't know exactly what this script/Recovery does? i.e. What function does it provide that you did not have before running it?
[Sorry for all the confusion on my part... I think originally I was working on the assumption that it was some kind of ROM to replace the factory crap?]

The script is the batch file (named RUN), that you open on your computer that pushes the recovery file (from PC to the phone) and installs it for you. If you download the package from this thread, you MUST extract the .zip folder somewhere (I extract stuff like this on my desktop to a new folder).

You must also be rooted to use this recovery script! Did you root your phone yet?

Yes, I am rooted. But, my question is what function does the script/Recovery provide? [Sorry, again, if I am seeming obtuse...]

OK recovery is to backup the whole phone. Let's say you install an app that changes a file, and that change causes your phone to do what we call a boot loop, where all you see is the animations when you first power up the phone.
Now with recovery installed, you can boot into the recovery program and restore your phone to your last good backup.

another use for recovery is to flash 3rd party ROMs. Like Boneface's stock 76. People have been commenting that since they used recovery to flash his ROM, their battery life has been extended.

Is that the explanation you were looking for?

Also the script just makes it easier for people to install the recovery IMG. If it wasn't for the script, you would have to launch the Android adb program in a terminal/command prompt, and manually type the commands to push the recovery image on your phone.

Thx U so much! That helps alot. For example, I hold down volume+/- and Power, and "Recovery" is an option that was not there before?

Think of the script as a tool that does the recovery installation for you. Once the OUDHS recovery is pushed to your phone, the script has nothing to do with your phone after that.

As for recovery (I thought I explained this to you somewhere already, but oh well...) :)

Your Premia comes with a generic recovery already installed, but has limited function. You are able to do a factory reset, but that only wipes user data from what is already there, and will not technically 'recover' anything you have deleted from system apps (rooted delete)

Example: Let's say you are going ape shite removing bloatware and accidentally remove a vital system app. BAM! Soft brick!! Stock recovery will NOT bring that file back, but only reset what is there.

Now, with OUDHS recovery, you can make a complete backup of everything on your phone at time of backup (including text messages, call logs, downloads, EVERYTHING. Think of this as a save slot on a gaming system. If you screw something up, you can go back to your 'save slot' (This would be a Nandroid backup) and go about your business like nothing happened.

So, if you are now rooted, you should install the OUDHS recovery since everyone makes a mistake now and again. Your phone, before root would not allow you to delete anything vital, and a data wipe would usually fix most problems. Now that you are rooted,If you mess up phone and have no Nandroid backup, Stock recovery won't fix anything, Huawei will tell you to go to hell if you ask them for firmware or help fixing your phone.

It's a small investment that will go a long way, plus you can flash boneface's ROM. I'm running it right now, I love it. So I hope I sold you the custom recovery. I can't stress it enough and I'm sure the entire AF community would agree with me :D

Ninja'd by Tintle :)

Actually, no. That would open up the useless stock recovery I mentioned :) After successfully running the script, the old recovery is replaced with OUDHS.

1. Run the script - installing "Recovery". How do you access this new function?
2. Do a backup? And, is this "roughly" equivalent to a "clone" of your current configuration?
3. See if it's possible to restore the backup?

Sorry, I was mentioning the stock recovery was accessed the same way. My bad, file that under WGAF LOL.. Anyway, yes PWR, VOL+ and VOL- is what you will use to access new recovery.

So, you ready to run this thing yet?

I used the "OUDHS-Recovery-Installer-Premia-4G-1.0.3.4-2" script. I don't remember any options. I got a "Shabbypenguin" icon below the menu options. "Reboot" was highlighted. I tried to swipe right and got nowhere. I hit the Power button and it rebooted ok. I powered down and tried the Volume +/- and Power and got the menu again. But, this time it was slightly to the left? Again, hit power button to select. Is this how you select a menu option - power button?

Baby steps...

Yes the power button is the select button. To move up or down use the volume buttons.

The screen shifting is a slight bug, it's only cosmetic.

Also a little safety feature is that you have to confirm everything you do, before you do it.

Now that you have recovery installed, I would do a backup to external SD card. After you do that, I would try a restore from external SD card. That way you can see what it looks like when you do a restore.

After you do all that, and if you are feeling somewhat comfortable with the recovery, maybe head over to boneface's thread and try his ROM. If you don't like that ROM you could always restore your backup

I'll probably do this tomorrow, I need sleep now.

When you do a backup [ via Volume+/- and Power and then select "Backup"], is this a "clone" of your current configuration? i.e. In Windows terminology, this is best way to backup your system drive. If the drive fails, you can restore the backup image to another drive.

Yes, it's a clone of the phone at time of making the backup. Everything is there.

So, you made a backup, no errors?

you need to select "back up to ext sdcard" because it wont fit on the internal sdcard.
what it does is backs up your entire system to a "nandroid" backup that can only be restored by using cwm on your device. so if you end up messing something up, you can restore your phone exactly the way it was when you made that back up (except it doesnt restore the /cust partition).
its possible to restore it to another device..but why would you do that?

1. Thx for your help [and everyone else]!
2. I was going for an analogy with the Windows reference.
3. What do you miss if the /cust partition is not backup/restore(ed)?
4. Using CWM in this case indicates using the "Recovery" feature?

I did my first backup. Volume+/-Power menu - selected "Backup to Ext SDCard" [menu wording may have been slightly different].

I waited until I saw the MD5 checksum message. That's usually a good sign that a backup is finished. I saw the "UP" button highlighted at the top of the screen. I pressed "Power" at this point. I thought that either the backup was not thru or that another one started? There was a lot of scrolling, text, that seemed to indicate that something was still going on? And, another MD5 checksum message. In any case, I want to verify where the backup lives? Where do I look? What folder/file name? I tried searching by date/size and still could not find it?

EDIT: I was searching by date. For some reason, the "Clockworkmod" folder on my SD Card is dated "31 Dec 79"?? And, further browsing shows a backup folder named "1970-01-31.17.09.43" about 1.03GB in size. I would love some feedback here.

The date thing is a bug with Recovery, the timestamp is broken. the size and date sound about right for a backup. go ahead and try to restore it,
