Root Overclocking Question

Hello everyone!

I just recently rooted my Eris and I was looking forward to a speed increase, however; I cannot speed up my processor past the normal speed of 528MHz. Upon further investigation, I found that I need to change my kernel #, is this the path I should take, and if so, exactly how do I go about this process??? Or do I have to do something else. I don't have any ROM's running (no OS updates, all i did was root). I have SetCPU installed.

If I need to include anymore information, just tell me, i'll provide what i can.

This whole rooting business is interesting but, it's all very complicated.

Hey DD ;), welcome to the AndroidForums.

Can you tell us what method you used to root your Eris? (jcase's 1-click app, eu1's 'Universal Root for Dummies!', Z4root, etc.)

If you've simply rooted it, then no, you can't overclock (yet) since the stock kernel needs to be replaced with one that is overclockable (the old-school way was to flash Zanfur's overclocking patch).

If your goal is to simply have root capability (pretty-much just run root-only apps) and have an overclockable kernel, then we can help you.

If you want to do more, you might very well want to install a custom ROM which:

1) is already overclocked
2) has a lot of bloatware removed
3) has some extra "goodies" baked-in (apps and such, especially things like cache2cache which will give you more room for apps)

Specifically, I believe you can flash xtrSENSE 5.0.1 directly on-top of your current setup without having to do any wipes (i.e., lose any of your current setup).

Let us know.

Cheers!

I used Jcase's 1-click root. I have been looking into the Zanfur patch but it sounded like i would need to wipe my phone. I think i'll look into xtrSENSE 5.0.1

Actually, Zanfur's overclocking patch is just a simple flash and it will replace your kernel so you can overclock it and you wouldn't have to wipe. Take a look at this post:

http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/135849-how-do-i-flash-oc-patch.html#post1253948

edit: also, be careful not to overclock too high right out of the box (don't check the "set-on-boot" box until you are sure you phone is stable at the selected speed).

Its a little "limiting", though in terms of what you'll be able to do, root-wise.

If you are wise and make your Nandroid backups before you do anything scary (:;)), then you can "play" with different things like the above OC patch and ROMs without worry, since you can always restore your Nandroid backup.

Cheers!

Alright, I've been busy the last few days, but I'm going to use the patch sometime today, I'll let everyone know what happens. thanks again!

All good news from here. I set a nandroid, flashed, set a failsafe, and tested settings. Found that I am happy with a cpu running at 729 MHz. Awesome! Thanks for all the help!
