Pandora on the EVO

I switched the settings back to standard and it works fine. So setting things to zero's doesn't seem to work for me at all

RTSP proxy port: 554
RTSP proxy address: rtsp.vog.sprintpcs.com
HTTP PD Proxy Port: 8085
HTTP PD Proxy Address: pd.vog.sprintpcs.com
Is what I changed it back to

I am curious to know if anyone has any theories as to my issues stated here?

I misread what you wrote in the first place - now, that's just odd - or - the route through the proxy server is somehow more efficient? Mr. Ed noted no change in his wifi settings either way, it made a huge difference to the better for me for the better on wifi.

My 3G speeds are tanking on set-to-zeros. I'll have to check later if that's anecdotal or true.

(huh - my speedtest in the cellar, but the web itself is quick in the zeros config - more on useful speedtest isn't)

Curious - background data on/off?

My background data was on. Here at work, I cannot test wifi, so I can't report on what is going on with that. I just tried again and am getting the same error. When I reset it to stock settings, it works fine (well, I am sure there is still thata nnoying popping, but at least Pandora doesn't error out for me). I am able to get other forms of data (brwose the web, IM, etc.) which doesn't seem to be any different, although I didn't do a speedtest at all.

You can't remove the http proxy settings. At least not on mine. It didn't work on 3g at all until I put them back. Removing the rttsp settings may hjgave helped but do not remove the http settings. Still out around town. Lots of logs . Be back soon

You seem to be having the same experience as I did. Interestingly, I am seeing people that got this to work changing ONLY the http settings  (unless I am reading things incorrectly).

Haven't had a chance to test Pandora, but my wifi speed is 9920/1994. Will check 3G elsewhere, I am in a bad area and can barely get 3G and no 4G at all even though I am less than a 1/4 mile from a Clear antenna, I am right by the airport so there are major height restrictions on the antennas.

As posted above, the net does seem smoother and a little faster to load.

Not at all against it. Turning off background data. I was actually thinking it would help to have it on but after re readingvthe above I see it from your perspective.....its stealing my interwebs to-do that lol. Sorry I didn't catch what you werecsaying sooner.

Http ....don't remove rtsp or whatever it was....remove

clarification:

my settings now and since 2pm or so. Everything works..logs verify that Stagefright is not using a proxy

RTSP proxy port: 0
RTSP proxy address: 0
HTTP PD Proxy Port: 8085
HTTP PD Proxy Address: pd.vog.sprintpcs.com

in my case, if the http settings are removed/replaced with 0...streaming stops working on 3g
changed em back and it started working again.

I am curious of a couple of things that repeatedly show up in logs

one looks to be the android system freeing up resources
01-15 12:16:14.126 D/dalvikvm( 808): GC_EXPLICIT freed 764 objects / 35528 bytes in 355ms

the other I have no idea...it pops up anytime you start pandora though. oh actually I think this is sendlog drrrrrr
01-15 12:16:22.876 I/global ( 3234): Default buffer size used in BufferedWriter constructor. It would be better to be explicit if an 8k-char buffer is required.

another question....any of you experience issues sending gmail after changing the proxy settings? all of the sudden all of my sent mail is stuck in a "sending" status
01-15 12:16:22.966 D/SendLog ( 3234): onDismiss mFinishLater=true

its perplexing that yours stopped working like that. Mine is set for zero across the board and it is working 100x better.

Ok. I am going to try it again. It was an instant response previously. Took off http settings and streaming services imediately stopped.

I am now on mikfroyo sbc netarchy 4.1.9 ....as I think is now safe to say that this is not rom specific. And thank goodness...I guess I had forgotten how much it sucked to be on the stock rom lol

Hey what ROM are you using?

so here is some more strange info for everyone

like i posted above...i switched from the stock rom to mikfroyo last night.
i immediately ran some speed tests..all that was removed was the rtsp settings...

What do I find....speeds are double (if not more) on wifi, 4g, and 3g...just as two of you had reported

I also removed the http proxy settings just now. funny how on the stock rom it caused everything streamwise to quit working (but internet etc still worked)

Pandora
quality this morning was awful. i would compare it to the quality when we first got froyo...you know when google removed the codec that Pandora uses

It skipped one time on the ride in this morning...but I'll add that I had background data on. (market requires it for dloads)

very interesting. About to start streaming Pandora now.

I don't understand why it wouldn't work yesterday (changing the http settings) or why I didn't see the faster speed test results until switching to mikfroyo. odd odd odd

lordofthereef...if you have time try changing the settings again to all 0's and see if it takes maybe clear dalvick and cache prior

so i changed the proxy setting to zero's on friday night, now i went snowboarding yesterday so i have done almost no testing. but here's a tad bit of input. and i am using the quad 0's.

tried pandora just now and it loads and plays fine over 3g. i couldn't let it run for testing. just saw it worked with the 0 proxy setting.

now as we drove to up and back to lake tahoe i occasionally woke up my phone. this was all while i had roaming coverage and every time i would get error 67 "sprint pcs user name and password incorrect" and no data could be used. but calls and texts were fine. i have no idea if this is normal for roaming or due to the proxy settings. this is the first time i have gone on a long trip while roaming and was able to look at my phone.

thoughts on background data. i did some tests with it on and off and both ways pandora would skip. i did try to send myself some email and it didn't seem to affect the playback. now here is the thing, what does turning off background data do? does it only turn off background data for stuff under accounts and sync? i feel it only does that and other 3rd party download apps can still sync in the background. i could have sworn i received an email to my sbc account with background data off, this is through the stock htc app. still need to do more testing to find out though.

and maybe its when the sync occurs, it definitely didn't seem to affect it during playback. but what if something syncs in between songs when pandora is loading the next song?

i'm gonna try and do more testing with this tomorrow at work.

another question is, will flashing a new rom revert the proxy settings back to the way sprint has them set?

Background data on allows some internal services to maintain a data connection to sync things whenever a server (specific to the things on that page) decides there's new info.

When off, applications can wake up per their schedule and request information from their servers.

That's what the warning is about for background data - some things will continue to update when it's off.

Background data on consumes more power because it's kinda chatty where the network is concerned.

As for your roaming experiences - if were handed off from Sprint to Verizon towers, then you were limited at 2G, no 3G at all, so you'd get voice and sms ok, but that's about it.

^ that explains alot about verizon and roaming. I kept seeing posts about roam control and force roaming and bought the app..have tried it multiple locations..and honestly..in situations where I feel I need it Verizon's network is worse than sprints.

early beat me haha
as he said : background data being off is supposed to stop most apps from using data behind the scenes...though some apps may still sync and use data

we have been wondering the same thing...ie..multiple text, emails, data sync while pandor is trying to fill the buffer back up all happening simultaneously could be creating an issue, which is where the idea of turning off background data stemmed from

yes, when flashing a rom, the proxy settings are overwritten with whatever is in the new rom.

interesting event....turned background data on while streaming..everything went nuts trying to sync..within minutes pandora skipped mid song to the next. logcat was a bunch of jumbled garbage but I can post it if anyone wants to see it. Pandora appeared to get pushed to a lower priority because the log was completely overrun with events like update weather etc.

Getting ready to go out for a bit and will test Pandora with http and rtsp set to zero.

Also, did a 3g speed test and got horrible results, 85/50! Switched the server to an out of town one and it jumped to 880/720, while this is not stellar I am in a bad area, will check it in a known good area.

I'm still having perfect uninterrupted performance with all zeros. No skipping, great data, and I do have background data on.

As for your roaming experiences - if were handed off from Sprint to Verizon towers, then you were limited at 2G, no 3G at all, so you'd get voice and sms ok, but that's about it.
I think it is still a "3G" connection. It is simply throttling your bandwidth since you aren't their customer. I could be wrong, but none the less, the speed is significantly less. You still get data though, just slower.

i see dalvik, not that i know much about it. but i wonder how pandora would act if dalvik is moved to a cache partition on the sd card. i've read doing this can speed up your system and that pandora works correctly with this done, well not referring to skips just that is works. i've seen it multiple places but here is a link to get this running on a mikfroyo rom xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROM] - [01/15/2011] - MikFroYo v4.4 - ReEngineered Sense - Simply Faster.

and the wimax, are you seeing the wimax i/o error? i think you get this on any rom rooted or not after shutting off 4g. the only way you can kill it is to reboot your phone after shutting 4g off. see Evo Battery Tips and Explanations **Updated 1-11-11** - xda-developers

if you guys want i can load a new rom tonight (i'm planning on the final version of mikfroyo 4.4) without loading any apps and turning off all sync's and see what happens tomorrow. i just need to sync my gmail once for my contacts and to download pandora. i can do this either with or without the proxy being changed.

^ that explains alot about verizon and roaming. I kept seeing posts about roam control and force roaming and bought the app..have tried it multiple locations..and honestly..in situations where I feel I need it Verizon's network is worse than sprints.

I am by no means a Verizon advocate, but are you speaking of only voice on Verizon's roaming network? If you are talking about data, unfortunately we are restricted to 2G... which is going to suck for streaming any kind of content at all (it's pretty painful for downloading anything, really, unless you are only going for some text on a web page LOL). It is basically there simply so Sprint has fewer giant gaps in their coverage area. In other words, I am not sure comparing Verizon's roaming services is a fair way to judge their actual network. JMO of course

You can certainly be our guinnea pig if you like! :p That said, I am not sure what real world value we will get if we find out that pandora works on a virtually bone stock system running nothing else. I sure know I don't love Pandora enough to get rid of everything else I love on my phone!
