Help Pandora on the Moment

Wow, strange. I have no issues whatsoever on my Moment when it comes to Pandora. It plays and sounds great! If it isn't the phone, then WHAT could be causing the random problems??

When did you get your phone? When was it made?

I found out through registering on Samsung's site that my phone's manufacture date was 10/25/09... and its useless to listen to pandora on my phone. i even tried headphones... it'll skip if I move the phone (I'm guessing the accelerometer messes it up?) and never finishes a song... it'll get so far behind from the skips and lags that it will just jump to the next song. Really disappointing.

Anyway, if you have a newer phone, they might have changed something in the hardware or the firmware 'hack' to fix the issue.

Any change in audio quality? I was finding that even with 'high quality' enabled I had zero bass response - anything lower than middle C sounded like it was stuffed in a box full of pillows, bass drum hits sounded like someone slapping the side of said box.

This could've also been a problem with my particular phone, which just died on me last night, will try it again on the new version when I pick up a new phone today.

Yea... I'm using Bose ear buds right now... and the base seems to be next to non-existent. It sounds almost like it gives out mid push....trying skull candy titans..... same thing. Slightly better because they're set up for bass.. but it's still kinda crappy. I know it can't be the phone, the regular music player on the phone works fine.

so i actually emailed pandora...

my email:

As you may be aware there is a large number of users that are having issues with your program on Android phones, most noteably everyone attempting to use Pandora on the Samsung Moment. Almost everyone who tries to use Pandora on any phone running the Android operating system is running into several issues:

- Upon starting Pandora the songs are garbled and choppy making it indecipherable this tends to last for aproximatly 15-30 seconds in most case
- The songs all end early skipping to the next song before the first one completes, this happens on every song and does not rectify it self
- Upon switching songs the previously noted issue with the songs being garbled happens again, every time it switches songs
- If the display is turned off/on/or switched from landscape to portrait or vice versa the issue with the songs being garbled re-starts

These issues seem to happen to all users and occur regardless of if the phone is pluged in or running solely on battery power, and regardless of if you are using the carriers network (ie EVDO) or if you are using wifi, it also occurs regardless of cell signal coverage.

Is there any fixes we can try or any way to rectify these issues, I know myself and others would be willing to do any testing that may help as we like your program and would like to see it run properly.

their response:
Hi Doug,

Sorry about that. The Samsung Moment is not yet supported, pending a firmware issue with the device. We're working on it with Samsung and hopefully they can put out a fix in a future release.

Thanks so much for your patience in the meantime!

cheers-
Tom K @ Pandora

basically, "haha too bad for you go screw yourself"

What the hell is that?! We have the damn pandora app in the market, and it's the official one! How the @#$% is it 'not yet supported.'?!?

They can just suck on something that rhymes with my left....you get the picture. It's bull.

It is not just Pandora. It is the same with LastFm and Slacker. When it comes to streaming, the Moment blows at this "moment". I have no problem with Slacker on my Hero. My wife is not too happy between this and the battery. I'm not sure what to tell her at this point. She might have to wait for for the next Sprint smartphone to come out. This has become a real pain.

I'm looking at this as good news, actually. This means that they are aware of the issue and it's going to be fixed. Pandora doesn't have a bug in their app, Samsung has a bug (actually, many bugs) in their firmware.

I had the Moment for a short period while having the Hero to do a side by side and I can say clearly that the hero was flawless in using pandora. Now at the beginning it was rough but the new updates made is very smooth with no force closes. The moment seemed to stutter when the phone was moved or not moved. Weird clicking noises at the end of every song, souded like it was playing from inside of a bag, and weird pauses and force skips. I didn't have a chance to check slacker because I got rid of the phone shortly after. They really need to fix this because I couldn't imagine having to use it the way it is now.

True, the Hero did handle Pandora perfectly. I had zero complaints about that. Which is odd when you consider the fact the Hero has some pretty bad lag. I sure would like to know what Sammy did to the Moment to screw up what I would guess would be the buffering of the song.

If they fix this and the AGPS, I'll have no complaints about my phone.

It only garbles down when I am doing major switching back and forth between a few apps and it doesn't play the very end to the songs sometimes, but I can finally listen to my Lady GaGa station...It's all acceptable...

Yeah, my palm pro didn't play pandora!!!!

I have some news on this guys. It's bad. I got a hold of a customer service rep. Today with pandora. She actually sent an inquiry to Samsung about the problems with glitching on Pandora, as well as any music. It's a firmware problem. She did at least say that an update will be coming soon, whenever that is. >.> 'Till then, it's last FM for me. It's not as bad as some peoplebarebmaking it out to be... just fav or ban songs. Simple.bit's already got me figured out and I'm happy with it. Not to mention it doesn't seem to lag/FC on me, at all. Even as I sit here and type away on my Moment at 5% battery.

That's not too bad. They are aware of it and working on the problem. It could be a LOT worse. I've had a lot of products :cough: HP OfficeJet 7310 :cough: that the vendor won't fix software bugs even when they know about them! Like double-sided printing that prints on the backs of the pages upside-down. So, this is good news to me.

I have to agree. I believe this is something samsung needs to resolve and hoepfully it will be soon. I also use Skull candy headphones. some of the best out by far. I would love to get a set of titans but have to wait. Any way back on topic. I dont have issues with the ringtones lacking sound or sounding garbled. Just pandora. Haven't tried any other streaming services. I already have me playlists in Pandora from where I use it at work so I will just listen to my music off the SD Card. I have more than enough and shuffle on that brings up all kinds of music. Hope the update from Samsung comes soon is all.

Hey I know what that is like. My previous laptop was an HP Pavilion dv6000. They actually released these computers (and many other models) with a motherboard defect that causes the wireless card to fail and in some cases the hard drive will not boot and the screen stays black.

This problem appeared with mine just 6 months after my warranty expired and they would not fix their own problem. They actually knew about this problem before they shipped these computers but they didn't want to eat the cost of building them and start over. The customer service rep actually told me, "If you would have called us 6 months ago while you were under warranty we could have helped you but now it's not our problem." I was like, "Are you kidding me? I didn't have this problem six months ago you ****. This just started happening last night."

I'm a graphic artist and I lost all my designs I was currently working on that hadn't been backed up on my USB drive yet and all my documents and files.

I went a bought a Gateway.... I'm so pissed I don't even want to buy anything by HP right now.... Not saying Gateway is better, but I'm just that pissed with HP because of it.

....ok I'm done ranting. hahaha

I emailed Pandora and they said they are not supporting the Moment at this time but are working on it....we'll see

Something is definitely wrong with Pandora on the Moment. I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest it's due to the CPU differences causing timing issues with some internal processes that Pandora uses. I could be completely wrong but I am getting stuttering on both EVDO and WiFi. The fact that it also skips to the next song before it finishes playing the current one also points to some sort of timing issue.

I kinda hope the issue shows up on the Droid as well so that we won't have to rely on Pandora taking action based solely on reports that it doesn't work well on just the Moment.

I have this EXACT problem with both Pandora AND Slacker. I reinstalled and I get the same problems. Pandora worked GREAT on my old crackberry storm so there's something wrong with the Moments software. I heard the CL14 update fixes this??? Confirm?

Still have my Moment but I'm back with webOS and running Slacker and Pandora beautifully. Attached at BT headset adapter to my stereo at home so I can throw the Pixi on a touchstone on my nightstand or end table and stream to my system. Pretty sweet. Still have my Moment. I hope 2.1 fixes it. Still use it for wifi.

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but I just tried Slacker at the gym, was a little garbled at the beginning then it smoothed out. But, after about 1.5 - 2 songs, it would stop working altogether. Had to reset the phone to get any data services to start working again. Does this have anything to do with the data services randomly going out?

I finally decided to try Last.fm, and that program suffers the same problems as Pandora. Also tried Slacker radio, and again, same problem: if you move the phone at all while its playing, the sound skips/hangs/garbles. If the screen has to rotate, the sound stops entirely while it rotates.

I know its an old issue, but it is definitely a sore spot for me. A major reason I got this phone with its overpriced plan was because i'd be able to listen to pandora anywhere... and I haven't been able to do that yet. At this point, I don't even know if I ever will on this phone, hardware-wise.

I think there's a bit of an issue at hand with the actual architecture of the chip and the speeds it will deliver.

The Moment ships with an 800 MHz CPU, the Samsung S3C6410. But, unlike the Qualcomm MSM7K single chipset found in the other Android phones, Samsung has a separate ARM11 cpu and modem chipset. This is the same underpowered chipset that the extremely underpowered WinMo Samsung Omnia 2. The O2 on Verizon has the same media problems that are being reported with Pandora, the media player, the gallery viewer and basically, any multitasking projects that require any processing power what-so-ever.

If I am remembering correctly, the Hero featured the MSM72xx series processor that is still featured in the HTC Touch Pro 2, with the ATI subchip set for the graphics. Simply put, HTC did a better job of pairing the CPU with GPU than Samsung. Even though the processor itself is faster, the poor pairing creates a larger drain on the system resources and thus, the 'skipping' problem that most people are suffering though when the phone starts multitasking.

An example of this is that Pandora seems to do just fine for me until K9 fires up to check emails. It begins dropping and skipping, then after about 20 seconds and K9 finishes, it's completely normal again.

Samsung knows that the chipset doesn't multitask well and already has the Cortex A-8 Hummingbird in production for the Galaxy S and more than likely the Moment 2 with the DTV chipset as well. Hopefully, some of the issues will get corrected with the 2.1 update, although underpowered phones can't usually be fixed with software, but we will see.

So, in a close to this novel, there have been some issues found in the following programs that are 'approved' from the market on the Moment...

AudioPlayer with EQ Platinum - Serious audio lag/skips with random force closes.
Pure Music Widget - Some audio lag with skips.
Rhapsody (requires subscription) - Some audio skips, buffers better than most.
Photoshop Mobile - locks in gallery view often, requires battery pull to reset.
Pandora - Skips or stalls when accessing other applications, resumes when CPU frees.
Google Voice - Force close on startup - Fixed in newest update.
Opera Mini 5 (Beta) - Cannot type addresses into address line - had to google search, then open site - should be fixed in newest update (haven't tested)
YouTube Downloader - Cannot save files to SD card, shown as in-use or not writable.

This is just a short list, there are many more issues, but again, with 1.5 being 'ancient' look for most of this stuff to go away with the 2.1 update. Hopefully the Moment will run it without a glitch!
