nice guide and well written
only thing i have is as a windows based administrator i do not trust windows applications for partition and drive work, they are usually a bit cowboy like in the approach to how they deal with the requests and never really align/optimise the partitions properly

I dont know why people are so fearful of GParted live as you dont need to know linux
it launches gparted gui from boot and can be booted from memory stick. so you can take it anywhere with you and nothing need be installed

I looked at GParted live last night and launched it from a cd, I was immediately out of my comfort zone :o as I'm not deeply into the tech stuff, but have rooted my desire using unrevoked, I just want to simply partition my sd card and create an ext2 to be able to do the apps2sd thing, a guide with screenshots like The ginger god's post would be excellent if someone could do that. I have read DanFrances information and am ever so thankful for his valuable posts, guides etc but think maybe the assumption is that some people understand a lot more than they actually do.
 
i can appreciate that however as a gui its no more complicated than the one above
im not knocking the guys work at all i just think people hear linux and run

free version supports creating and formatting only
if you want to be able to delete partitions you cannot and you need to pay money if you want your paritions aligned (gparted does this as standard and gives faster performance)
 
Thanks to the op as its always good to have alternatives but when i did my card i also use gparted (having never used linux in any way shape or form)

Was just a case of booting from cd pointing gparted to the sd card, selecting what partion size & format you want and let it do its thing. Was suprisingly easy.
 
Gparted or nothing. Windows based partition "managers" aren't that great at partitioning Windows file systems, let alone something as alien as EXT.

Like Rastaman, this is also my professional opinion, as well as my personal one ;)
 
After DanFrances gparted or nothing post I looked at it again last night and found a youtube video about it. I have now partitioned my 16gb card with 14.15Gb Primary partition and 750mb Ext3 partition.

I'm not sure if this has worked properly because system info says
SD Card storage 14.15GB, Free 13.08GB
A2SD Storage 57.69MB, Free 24.28MB
Internal Storage 148MB, Free 38.19MB
System Storage 250MB, Free 8.25MB
System Cache 40.00MB, Free 38.87MB
Memory 415MB, Free 132MB, Idle 40.36MB

Does this look right?

I didn't think it looked right, Can you point me in the right direction of how to get the A2SD+ script onto my phone so that I can flash it?
 
Quick question

I am trying to install Leedroid, which has gone on fine.
Only problem is with the SD Card, I cant seem to format the card properly.
Going via ROM manager I get an error re permission so it fails.
Tried in gparted but it didnt seem to work either
 
I'm currently using LeeDroid 2.2F and am considering upgrading to 2.3C in due course.

I'm glad I've seen this thread, as I've been toying with the idea of creating a larger partition on my SD card for apps. Nothing too extravagent, just 1GB rather than 512MB for example? Is that worth doing?

If so, what's the easiest way to do this? I assume it's using GParted? I don't supposed there is a simpleton's guide to obtaining and using GParted around?
 
I used Gparted to partition my SD card the other day. Have you had a look at it yet, it's very easy to work out.

I put my SD card in fired up GParted which showed me my SD card formated in FAT32. I resized the partition by dragging the line back the created a partition in the empty space then formated it in EX3, clicked applied took it out and put it back in my phone. I then copied all my stuff back onto the SD card in the fAT32 partition including the ROM and A2SD+ script I was going to flash. Booted into recovery and flashed the lot one after another then re-booted the phone.

Yes I used a SD card reader but as danfrance says have a look at his guide because that's the one I was looking at for reference. The GParted bit was the easy bit :D
 
Done it. I think it's all gone to plan.

It's showing up in Titanium as over 1GB of storage space for Apps2SD etc.

Internal: 154MB (117MB Free)
SD Card: 14.7GB (13.9GB Free)
SD Card: (a2sd) 1.12GB (928MB Free)

Seems it's all working, yes?

I have done that, and formatted the card in it seemingly fine.

But when I mount the card on the phone I cant see any files on it (photos etc) and if I stick a file on the drive it cant be seen by the phone it seems.

Plus with Quck system info it says

SD Card Storage 7.51Gb
A2SD Storage Information not available

Even though I put it as 512Mb on ext 3

where do you find that info on Titantium?

I'm not sure why it's not showing up in Quick System Info. The stats are usually slightly different to Titanium, but not by too much.

Ok so you mounted in recovery as usb mass storage (not mount sd card) and partitioned.

Did you reformat the fat 32 partition?

Where are you putting these files you talk of? Remember, the phone doesn't see the ext partition.

Quick system info only shows a2sd space once your Rom supports it. You read the faq?
