pc cant detect hero phone

Just got my new hero - Well happy! Im trying to put some music from my pc on to my hero but the pc cant detect the phone - am I doing something wrong?

You need to mount your phone so that the PC sees the SD card. Plug it in with the USB cable. Drag down the top bar. Choose "USB connected", then when the next message comes up choose "mount". You can then see the SD card in Windows Explorer

Ive been trying to update the firmware, but when i run the software I get a message saying phone not detected - but it syncs with no probs

You probably need to tell us what firmware you are trying to update and what software you are trying to run. Have you mounted it as I suggest. You can't sync if it is mounted.

Peter, Im doing exactly what you have written in your above reply but my pc is not seeing my sd card?

Ive even tried a spare 2 gig card in my hero that I have and windows explorer cant see that one either - have I got a duff phone?

Frank

sorry but I don't know if you have a duff phone! Your computer must be able to "see" the phone if it is syncing with no problems.

But there seems to be two different problems here. Your first question asked about putting music onto your phone. For that you "mount" it so that the computer sees the SD card as a USB drive and then transfer the files across. And for that you need to follow what I said in my first post. When you do that the computer does not "see" the phone as a phone (if you know what I mean).

Your second question is about updating the firmware. I assume by that you mean automatically installing an update you have downloaded from your computer. For that the computer needs to see the phone, so you should NOT have the SD card mounted. Instead your need to have is in sync mode and not have it mounted.

Thanks for the help Peter - Its sorted!!

I done a manual update on win 7 and it seems to have installed drivers etc for the hero - all is good!

Thanks again peter;)!

I have a similar problem as the topic of this thread:
I'm unable to get the PC to detect the Hero, or the Hero to detect the PC
I've tryed 2 USB cables (the original HTC cable, and a standard one), and 2 laptops (win7+xp) - it charges the phone, but no USB Icon in the hero statusbar, or no windows "ding" when connecting the USB cable.

I've checked the setting under "connect to pc" (Diskstation and Allways ask) and under "development" (Debugging on and off) without any luck.

I've rebooted the phone and removed the battery.

I've unmounted the SD card, and removed it, and reinserted it - still no luck

I've installed the latest HTC sync (in case there was any new drivers it needed)...

Phone is Nordic Stock with OTA upgraded Android 2.1 - It's the first time since the upgrade I've tried to connect via USB, but it did work before the upgrade - I do not know if it is a coincidence or related to the upgrade.

(Fw : 2.1update1 kernel:2.6.29-063c4d24 build: 3.32.405.1)

Any suggestions?

2.1 changes the way the phone reacts when you plug it in to a computer. Before it went to the default mode you set. Now, if you have the "always ask" box ticked it comes up with a screen with 4 choices -charge only, HTC sync, Disk Drive or internet sharing.

With charge only the PC will not see the phone or SD card at all. With disc drive (is that your "diskstation"?) it will only see the SD card as a USB drive. It will not see or sync with the phone. With HTC sync it will see the phone as a phone and sync with it but will not see the SD card. Finally with internet sharing it sees the phone only as a modem.

Have you tried setting one of the other settings as standard, like HTC sync?

Thanks for your reply peterc10.
Yes, I've tried all the different "Default actions" with no change, and also with or without "Allways ask".
Yes, it is "Disk Drive" I "wanted" to say, I have Norwegian language setting on the Hero, and the menus are in Norwegian, so I try to translate them back to English...

I am as baffled as you! You have done everything I would suggest. The only other thing is a factory reset on the phone (after backing everything up). I know that is pain as it takes ages to re-install evrything the way you had it.

Only other way is to try email to HTC to see what they suggest - I bet it is "do a factory reset" though.

Thanks - I've emailed HTC - I'll post the reply here, but I bet you are right (and a backup without a USB connection? ;-) - Luckily I've abandoned all my "phone contacts", and only have "Google contacts"...

For the backup get Mybackup trial version (lasts 30 days) for free from the market. It will back up all the apps and most settings etc to the phone's SD card, which will not be touched with a factory reset.

Thanks.

I've done some emailing back and forth with HTC support, and they concluded (after suggesting I do exactly the things I've done (and told them I've done in first mail)) - Wipe the phone memory (what a shock ;) )

I've tried this, and I'm unable to wipe the phone...
Pressing HOME and POWER (forever) (from boot) gives me a red triangle, not a yellow one...

I've emailed them back about this, but I believe it's too late during the day to get an answer before tommorrow...

Dunno why they've directed you there.... in Settings-Privacy there's an option to do a factory reset. Try that.

Btw, I reinstalled my OS last weekend (Win7 x64) and after installing the latest HTC Sync (2.0.33) the 'phone was detected and the drivers installed correctly right away. So it's definitely not a general problem with either 2.1 or Sync. If the reset doesn't sort it out we can do some lower-level troubleshooting to work out what's stalling things.

Thanks Slug, Factory reset did not help.

HTC had this reply:
(remove standard start phrase)
This symbol means that the boot process has failed. What you can try to do is:
Hold and press the back arrow
Press power
It will take you a white screen
Connect the phone to the pc
The pc will give you the message that boot loader sucesfully installed
Double click ruu file what you have downloaded from the website ans use the following link:
HTC Hero - ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero
I did this, and reflashed the phone sucsessfully - but after flash - Windows say "Unknown or deffective USB unit connected" (witch is progress, the Computer now is able to detect the phone somehow) - and Phone still do not alert of connected computer. (this was before the FOTA upgrade) (on android 1.5)
After FOTA upgrade - it's back to no action (same as before reset and reflash)

Witch leads me to believe there is a hardware fault on the phone in USB controller circuit. (witch is a bit strange, when I'm able to flash the phone via USB from the USB Fastboot system)

Will (of course) give this info to HTC)

Schox I've had same problems, basically: My O/S is: Windows 7, 64 bit version. My phone is recognised by my PC by HTC sync and so I can sync all the phone numbers etc between the phone & PC. A Disk Drive "E:" shows up (but i can't access it). However, I bought the phone to be able use it as a "Disk Drive" also (and bought a large 32GB card for this). I have both a 4GB card (supplied) and the 32GB card. Problem is as follows: 1) When I got to Menu> "SD & phone storage", the phone shows that Total Space is 3.69GB & Available space is 3.55GB, and the card is mounted (as it says "Unmount SD Card"). 2) When I changed "Connect to PC" to "Disk Drive", the SD card is no available! I can't see any disk drive either for it in Windows Explorer. Total Space says "Unavailable" and Mount SD card is greyed out! Have I got a bad phone? Same problem on both the 4GB & the 32GB cards. This is vitally important, as the reason i got the phone (prime) was to be able to use it as a hard drive for music.

Reinstalling the latest version HTC Sync on the computer often helps. If you have Android 2.1 on the Hero you can use version 3 of HTC Sync

What happens when you first plug in the phone to the computer? If you are running Android 2.1 then you should get asked to choose a connection type. One of the options should be Disc Drive. Have you tried to choose that and if so what happens?

If you are using Android 2.1 and version 3 of HTC Sync then you can choose to Sync your music with your computer via HTC Sync itself, so you do not need to run it as a Disc Drive

I've tried everything, but only one thing proved to be the solution. The symptoms were: No Notification in my Phone for Connection, ONLY CHARGING FUNCTION WAS STILL ON. I have tried on several computers and with different cables, still was happening. The problem itself is in the Mobile phone. Go to 'Storage' --> 'Eject/ Unmount the SD Card', thereafter you must 'Mount' the SD card. You don't need to restart the phone or taking the SD card out of the device. I don't know what the SD card has to do with the Data transferring via USB port, but it really helped me. It's a Quick fix. Good luck!
