PDANet or Tether?

I used tether for BB for many moons and it worked very well. Seems most Android users prefer PDANet. Any input? Want to pull the trigger soon.
 
PDANet is tetherin without rooting a device.

Once rooted, we'll be able to tether wirelessly with other apps :)
 
i understand that. i am asking for opinions between two pieces of software that allow tethering without rooting. your answer is of little relevance.
 
I installed PDAnet this morning and can connect tethered through USB or with the built in Bluetooth on my Laptop. Seems to work flawlessly so far, connects right away!

I don't have it set to connect automatically, although the option is there.

No, it's a separate Android program. Now if you were to get crazy and really rack up the data use, then Verizon might catch on. As we know, "unlimited data" is not really "unlimited"! :mad:

I got PDANet (full version) and connected my laptop by USB cable and Bluetooth. I tested with SpeedTest - download was 1.4 mb/s and upload was .41 mb/s. I was out in the boonies so I thought this was an adequate speed for my location.
In the car I was able to browse web sites (wife driving) and had a very reliable signal with no slow down in response.
Laptop runs Win 7 32 bit.
I have the Verizon unlimited data plan so I get no other charges for using the phone as the modem for my laptop.
This is a more secure connection when traveling than using WiFi at hotels.
 
i had a tethered connection with pdanet up and running within 10 minutes, literally. very easy to do...

by the way, a full license for pdanet is only $18.95 for the moment (at least it was as of sunday night), so you might want to pick it up soon if you plan to do so...
 
I think that I'm going to go with PdaNet (full version for access to https:// sites). From my understanding if you go with the Free Trial Version, when the trial is over and you are prompted to continue with limited free access or buy the full the version, the full version is $25. However, if you go straight to JuneFabrics and buy the full version, it's $18. Have any of you who started with the free version experienced that? I'm coming from a TP2 where I just changed the registry for tethering, so I'm new to tethering software. Do I need to download the full version on my pc first, and then sync the phone? Also, if you buy one license, is it good for more than one device (say can I download the sofware on my trusty PC and my laptop)? Thanks anyone...
 
The problem is that not a lot of people have Tether. It's still in beta. I signed up for the beta almost a month ago and never got an invite.

I'm about ready to buy PDAnet as I will be out of town and will need tethering ability.
 
I have an INcredible and I purchased the full version straight from the company as others have suggested - got the reduced price :D

It took all of about 5 minutes to get my Macbook Pro working with it. Worked great! and very simple. Not sure why yours isn't working.

Must be user error.... :o
 
I use pdanet. I bought the full copy. I've been a paid PDAnet user when I was using Windows Mobile. When I need it in a pinch, it is worth the asking price.

I also have a Verizon Mi-Fi 2200 personal hotspot that my company gives me (both the Incredible and Mifi are work issued).I use the Mi-Fi 95% of the time because is freaking fast. However, I still keep the pdanet in those instance when I don't have the Mi-Fi.

Pdanet works, and I don't expect it to be blazing fast. USB tethering is better than bluetooth and it also charges the phone. I have it working w/ OS X.
 
If you're on windows, just search this forum for "Tether Natively" and you will find a very easy setup to tether without even buying an app like PDA-Net. Either way works, just natively is completely, 100% free. I've been using it for the past couple weeks without any issues.

PDA net: need to buy the software. Get free internet. If caught pay huge usage fees with no sympathy from the carrier because technically, thats stealing and in violation of the terms and conditions.

Tethering: VZaccess manager is free. Is legal. $15 to $30 a month. No surprise charges unless your streaming video, torrents, or WOW. Did I say legal.

And before anyone gets ticked at me, lets look at the stealing part. Say your using an app that a dev puts on the market for sale, but you downloaded the software from a less than scruplulous site for free.

Ask dev about that.

Or we could consider the fact that with the amount of money I PAY Verizon every month, tethering should be free in the first place and part of my UNLIMITED DATA PLAN. Charge a reasonable price or give customers what they deserve for the price they pay and the majority will not resort to "stealing".

Preach to somebody else!!

actually what you end up paying for data to use on the phone AND to tether is the same as a person using a broadband card pays just for service on a computer with no sharing.

and its in line with offerings from other companies.

how is this unreasonable?

"Tether" is not available yet :(

Great proggie/company. Used it on my BB

I have been holding off on PDANet, to see if the Tether beta materializes.


As per Twitter:

@rybt75 No official date. We were just about to re-launch the android beta but were having one issue with the Droid.

Tethering Natively, for free, without paying for a 3rd party app like EasyTether or PDAnet.. And it's faster, too!

Just as "Legal" as using one of those 3rd party apps, too, so let's not start a war over it :P
