Pentile screen? Really that bad?

i dont know, really was super excited about getting AMOLaiD as i was gearing up for the uneventual GSII launch... but i remember finally seeing the display in person for the first time on my buddy's charge and then looking right back at my OG, and the opinion of my 2 year old brick actually went up even more. a little underwhelmed to tell you the truth. then again i didn't view any media on the thing or extensively compare the two. in the end i guess i just prefer color accuracy over vibrancy. curiously tho, EVOs and other HTC phones look terribly washed out to my eyes...*shrug*
 
Actually, here is a really good test. Most current (LTE) devices @ VZW have GB on them, so if you open up the Market, with the latest 3.x market installed on the device (which, when I was playing, both D3 and Charge had on it) you can get a decent comparison since the main market page always advertises a movie at the top.

The image looks brighter, more clear on the Charge...but the intensity, the hues, they look forced. Since I'm rooted, I can also compare my OG DROID - and the images there, while not necessarily as vivid, look more, I don't know, acceptable?

I suppose it's also a matter of what you're used to - I've ha my DROID for a while and I'm used to the image display. I suppose if I were to get an AMOLED device, I'd eventually get used to it, too - but right now, coming fro my tons of time spent in front of a computer plus my time with my DROID, the vividness of the AMOLED looks forced. Which I know it is not I'm just saying that to me it looks forced.

A good analogy would be to go to your TV and ramp up the color / saturation / hues sliders until the colors start looking grotesque. That is the impression I get from the Sammy screens.
 
Actually, I need to clarify and quantify something here as well - I've always used subdued color sand hues when watching TV and viewing movies, so that is invariably factoring in to my overall opinion as well. I'm usually the one that turns the colors down when watching TV or viewing media on my computer screens, so....

Im right there with you, I cannot stand going over someones house to watch football or something and it looks like the grass is neon, people who torch settings on tvs drive me nuts. I actually have has multiple people tell my plasma looks bad because the colors are dull, which is actually the most accurate representation of color.

Same way on phones, my sister has a Samsung Captivate?? And I cannot stand the screen, the colors are way over the top for my liking, but to each his own.

Glad someone else sees it the way I do.

TBH, I'd rather have subdued hues and not so vibrant colors and have a screen I can use in full, 101 degree F cloudless sunlight....

Agreed. I love slightly over-saturated colors. If I want true-to-life, I'll look out a window. :p

I had use of a wide gamut 27" LCD for awhile. The colors were glorious (jeez, I didn't think red could get that red!) but for day to day use it was easier on the eyes to throttle back to a standard sRGB setting. On a small phone screen it doesn't bother me at all.
 
From my experience (have a DX2, DX and amoled incredible RIP) the DX2 has not only a very bright screen easily seen outdoors, but also has quite vibrant colors. Yes, VERY close up one can see some pentile pixelization, but you have to be REALLY looking for it close up. At least for my eyes. Maybe moto will improve the pentile for the Bionic over the DX2 but if not it will still be a top notch screen IMHO.
 
To me, the pentile is not the problem, since looks good in sunlight, good with battery and looks sharp.

The issue for me is the display ratio. A lot of games and emulators are slightly squished, due to the 16X9. I prefer the standard 16X10 of most other displays.
 
We finally got a live unit of the Droid X2 in. Ok, I gotta admit, it's not very hard to see the pixels at all. Now that I've noticed it, I can't unsee it. I don't have a live unit of the D3 to compare to see if there was any improvement, and I'll have to sell another to judge.

Is it a deal breaker for me? No, not really. If it's better on the battery and better in sunlight, that's more important. But I think I can positively say I'll only tolerate it on the Bionic, my next phone will have to look much better.
 
I switched from a Captivate to the Atrix after having very poor reception in areas that had been fine before (tried 3 different units). Pretty screen was nice, but I really wanted to be able to call people. At first, the Atrix's screen looked washed out, but actually being able to make calls and having 30-40% battery left every night made me stick with it. Now when I look at my husband's Charge, the colors look way too oversaturated, almost like a cartoon. I now actually prefer the Atrix screen. I do ocasionally notice the pixelization, it seems worse with the screen protecter on, but the benefits make it worth it. I plan on getting the Bionic on the unlimited data plan I activated with an old Droid.

Talk about a coincidence. I walked into a Verizon store to look at DX2. Definitely not happy about that screen.

I want a phone NOW, so bad, but if the Bionic screen is like the X2, I just can't do it. Big time pixelation. :(
 
I have tomorrow off, so after visiting the chiropracter, I'll go back to the VZW store and let the idiots there once again try to convince me that the Charge is the best phone on the planet.

I'll be sure to drop them my AF username on my way out. I know one of the employees there is on here but he has no idea I know he's here :D
 
I went into a VZW store to check out the existing phones with the pentile display and I'm pretty underwhelmed. It looks like I'm looking at the phone through a bug screen, especially when viewing greens.

To be fair, the older AMOLED displays had the same pixel staggering issue (manifesting as the aforementioned bug screen effect). I couldn't stand to look at the SGS or Nexus S for that reason. Fortunately, the Super AMOLED+ on the SGS2 and Charge uses a proper subpixel pattern and completely eliminates this problem. Point is, perhaps they've refined pentile for the Bionic?

I'll have to say I love the display on the Charge, but don't frown on any others, either. They all really do look good, especially at full brightness, and unless I have them side by side, I can easily live with the difference.

Some are more vivid but over-saturated, while the other is the opposite. On any given day, the content that I view on my phone may be life-like, or it may just as well be a game or UI element, where vivid/dynamic colors are appropriate.

In the end, while I do have a preference (Samsung displays), it's not enough in itself to sway my decision.
 
I played around with the Droid 3 yesterday to get a feel for the new motorola skin and I did not notice anything wrong with the screen. I hope the Bionics screen is just as good or better and I will be happy. Coming from a Charge I am actually surprised that I did not think the screen looked like crap.

On a side note the new moto skin is really cool and it is smooth on the Droid 3. The launcher is great and the homescreens have 3d transitions and has great performance. Moto has definitely stepped up on blur or whatever you want to call it now.
 
Hi everybody. I'm the owner of an X2 and thinking about either the Bionic or the Prime. (Haven't voted yet in the Bionic vs. Prime poll yet :confused:)

I don't think the X2's display is bad, but you do definitely notice the dots at times. But I think the readability in direct sunlight is great.

Is the Bionic display definitely PenTile? Has that been confirmed? (Sorry, I tried searching, but didn't come up with anything.)

And if the Prime is HD, will that be PenTile as well? Does it matter what the resolution is? Will it look "dotty" either way?

I'm not sure whether to get Bionic or wait. (I'm giving the X2 to my sister and taking her upgrade. She doesn't care about 4G and I do, and she likes the X2 so. . . .heh heh heh)

It doesn't actually say pentile, but yeah, the 4.3" qHD screen is Pentile.

Like AMOLED, though, I'm betting this is an upgraded Pentile, not necessarily the same in previous phones. I could be wrong (but I'm hoping that I'm right)
 
My 2 cents......had my DX with me when I visited BB this morning and asked if I could see a live DX2 to see the pentile screen for myself. The good people didn't have one but they were nice enough to break open a new unregistered Photon (I visited a Verizon store earlier and they had nothing live). Viewed close up (5 inches or so) very clearly horizontal lines were jagged and the old LCD 'screen door effect' was very much present in force. My DX looked considerably better. At a foot away (or a bit more), where I typically view the screen the screen door effect was not noticeable and the screen appeared much better. Before Thursday rolls by I want to spend more time with these pentile screen phones to see if I could live with it.
 
Hey guys. I hate to thread jack but I have a question regarding this. I'm on vzw and am patiently waiting for the nexus prime which is said to have a pencils screen. With that said it's also going to have a 720 display with around a 315ppi which means the human eye can't detect pixels. Much like the iPhone which I have. If that's the case will the lentils matter if he resolution is so high? Your thoughts?

The Prime is supposed to have a Super AMOLED screen with a standard pixel configuration (RGB) and not PenTile.

Also, the whole "Retina" display is just some Apple marketing BS. A 720p screen that size is going to look amazing but that bump in resolution isn't going to suddenly make pixels disappear.
