Petition against AT&T/Motorola anyone?

So, I have been having issue with my data today and I called AT&T to see if there were any outages in my area. I was told that everything is fine but I wish I could have recorded the conversation. So I asked the CSR why would the Atrix have lower download speeds than my iPhone 4, he said the reason why is that the Atrix uses Internet Explorer like browser and that the iPhone uses Safari which is better because it stores less cache... SMH

I just decided to post a review of the Atrix on Amazon...

Not sure if they'll approve it with the links, but heres what I submitted:

TITLE:
AVOID ATRIX if you want "4G" or ever hope to upgrade Android

BODY:
There is much dissatisfaction among Atrix users because Motorola has ignored its user's requests concerning their encrypted bootloader which essentially makes this Android phone unable to be upgraded unless Motorola provides the upgrade. Sideloading of apps has been disabled on this phone, restricting user options when it comes to what they want their phone to do.

Options and software that the Android OS supports on your Atrix are restricted or killed by Motorola and AT&T.

Unfortunately, Motorola has a bad track record when it comes to upgrading their devices and listening to consumer requests to allow the consumer to be able to develop and/or upgrade on their locked hardware.

AVOID THIS PHONE if you wish to be able to tinker with it very much with ROMs or upgrading to a newer version of Android.

There is also an online petition against AT&Ts misrepresentation that this phone will give users "4G" speed.

The author of the petition states:

"Can AT&T explain to us why our upload speeds can't go over the 300kpbs mark while other phones such as the iPhone 4 have upload speeds 4 to 10 times faster than the Atrix 4G? Don't we PAY the SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY for your data plans? STOP CAPPING UPLOAD SPEEDS !!!

I am using Groubal to try to get AT&T and Motorola's attention about this matter because I couldn't find any other way to do so....We all know that AT&T is in the process of deploying their "4G" network (Please do not use that EXCUSE to explain the HSUPA CAPPING) but our Atrix 4G phone doesn't even have 3G upload speeds !

There are so many unhappy paying customers out there and we want to be heard and our phones to work as they are meant to. If this is not resolved before the 30 day return period, unhappy customers like myself will be returning their phones !

Don't get me wrong... this is a GREAT phone! I own one! However, because of the above limitations I am seriously thinking about returning it before my first 30 days are up with AT&T!

I like being able to do what I want with what I purchase... and I certainly expect the speed that is advertised (and that iPhone users are getting) to be what is provided to me!

Agreed.. It is more like 3.5g, I've read several articles about this. Sure its the next generation but I wish we had more standards dictating what is and what isn't "4g". A little honesty wouldn't kill them, would it? Actually it might considering the comparisons with Verizon would leave them in the dust in several respects. I really thought AT&T was a dying company a long time ago.
I'm glad you understand the the "G" stands for generation of technology. It by no means indicates any type of speed standard. No if other people would also understand that.
With that being said I'll add a few notes myself. I'm a DEG tech for ATT that installs and programs(uploads canned software) the fiber components in the cell towers to deliver the data signals.
Yes, we're upgrading but it is a huge network.
Yes, we should have held out on the 4g hype. Everyone should have but it's all marketing giving into consumer thirst.
Yes, we have terrible coverage compared to VZW in certain parts of the country.
Yes, I make a living from ATT.
No, I probably not use our service if I did not work for them.
AT&T did die off. It's SBC that merely kept the name for the global recognition. SBC ran the company through all the "mergers" and buying of everyone else. Once the ATT exec retired he was replaced by the ATT guru.
Let me also add that upload means very little to me. I've had no issues posting pix or sending pix text on my Atrix. The DL is the most important to me but it may not be the same for other users.

On a side note. The night I picked up my Atrix my wife and I did a comparison using speedtest.net right in our living room against her VZW Incredible. We both have full signals. Her DL was in the 750kps range. Mine was in the 3.2mg range. I'll have to wait until someone I know has a "4g" VZW phone to make an accurate comparison for better results but even my old iCrap 3g ran faster than her Incredible.

My 2 cents on this subject. Apple is lining pockets of ATT execs to keep pushing the iCrap. I thought of waiting for the next gen that should be out this summer but I'm sick of the Apple leash. So far I have no complaints on my Atrix other than the learning curve of adjusting from my 3g I had for two years.

The thing is if you were moving from a iPhone 4, you would probably have a different point of view.

They both use Webkit- based browsers, the cache part might be true, but I am pretty sure that given everything else held constant (network speed) android's browser loads more completely and faster than Safari...
Many CSR's that I spoke with about the Captivate GPS fiasco did not even know that the Captivate ran Android let alone what version of it. I'd wager that this CSR thought the Atrix was a Windows Phone 7 device...

Apple gives AT&T no money. The iPhone was a saving grace for AT&T when Verizon and Sprint were the up-and-coming carriers, and so that received all of their energy and focus for a few years now- it really is all they know. They are testing the Android waters but are still shell-shocked from the crippling effect on their network from all of the "data-hungry" iPhone users (and Android uses more data), and so hence the tiered-data and HSUPA cap. I think we will get HSUPA enabled by summer for one of two reasons: firstly due to the complaints and bad press brought up by this petition and the blogosphere (just like when they enabled it post-launch on the iPhone 4; that was a couple of weeks later if my memory serves right), and secondly I firmly believe they will enable HSUPA as the HSPA+ rollout begins in earnest. Remember we are promised an update to enable 1080p recording at some point in the future as well as the gingerbread update "later this year" the updated modem file could easily be rolled into one of those...

Hopeful, I know, but I do not see finality in this issue. yet...

I agree !!

I added this video to the petition:

Okay so I just got off the phone with AT&T's president office and I gave my info as well as the address of the petition. I was told it will be escalated to their managers and that they weren't aware of the issue. If you guys want to call, here is the number (no waiting): 1-866-220-8446 . The more calls they get, the faster they will respond !!

We finally got some love from Phnadroid lol Thanks Kevin !

Call this number: 1-866-220-8446 QT&T's office of the president

I was talking about this sentence from the story..Your petition should point this out, kind of a bad rap the only phone in AT&T arsenal that takes advantage of the upload speed of the network as it sits right now is the Iphone 4 even though all other users suffer.

"Currently, AT&T handsets authorize as 3GPP Release 5 devices on the network. This might not mean much to you, but what matters here is that the fifth version of the protocol doesn't support HSUPA. The updated 3GPP Release 6, however, does, and as soon as AT&T allows devices to authorize as Release 6, the magic of fast upload speeds will happen. There is one exception to the rule and not surprisingly it is the iPhone 4. The handset uses the sixth release, which grants it much faster uploads."

Yes I read that..the closest comparable to the Atrix is the iphone 4.

What is that numbr for?
That's for AT&T's president office..I called, along with other people, to put a complaint in. They said that they aren't aware of the situation, I am expecting a call back today or tomorrow as they investigate..you should call (you will get someone right away, no waiting) !

The list for the the Office of President of AT&T phone numbers per region:

Toll Free: 866-220-8446 (Eastern region)
Toll Free: 877-734-0766 (Southern region)
Toll Free: 800-498-1912 (Western region)

I just called the presidents office and i got the same bullshit spiel from other sales associates that 'different devices offer different speeds', even though i mentioned that my previous iphone was getting 3 -4 times faster upload speeds that im getting currently, but they are 'upgrading the networks'.

He even then went on to tell me that if i wasn't satisfied with the phone i could return it within the 30 day window.

Seems like they are Pretty much resorting back to the bullshit responses.

If you guys decide to return the phone, don't let ATT charge you a restocking fee! Since they are failing to resolve this issue.

I guess we could all run out and get the Iphone 4 since it's the only AT&T phone we can use to take advantage of their network.

Unfortunate that AT&T lets Jobs dictate how to run their network.
