Root Phone slow after rooting

I rooted my phone and flashed Cyanogen rom and installed Data2SD. All went OK and now I have loads of phone storage to install as many apps as I want.

However my phone is running slower now. I just used the class 2 4GB SD card that came supplied with the phone - is the SD card likely to be the problem? (given that some of the internal phone memory is now virtual on the SD card) Also I have seen info on some roms that suggest a class 4 card as a minimum.

I ordered a new class 6 16GB card (it arrived and it was a DOA unfortunately so awaiting a replacement from eBuyer) and I'm hoping this will solve the speed issues.

I'm also hoping that it's a relatively simple procedure to swap the cards and simply restore my current rom & apps from a backup...

Class 2 for Data2SD might well be a the issue - people generally recommend a faster card for that.

Can't say from experience as Data2SD isn't something I've tried.

You could have tried a2sd+ with CM7. The speed should be fine even with a Class 2 card.

Nandroid Back Up, reflash without Data2SD and see if you've got more speed.

Tried that and just had Cyanogen ROM running, and it seemed quicker for sure, but as soon as I added a Google account, to be able to do anything, it started syncing my Apps and the internal storage rapidly filled up!

Now restored my backup and will wait until my new card arrives.

Did you move the apps to ext3 partition? Without that (a2sd+) you will indeed have a full internal storage soon.

mine did this once after a new flash, i installed SetCPU and changed the CPU settings to 998, it had set em really low, like something in the 100's
try it? if not then, well at least i tried :)

Thanks for the tip. I've installed a free app called CPU Master and it says my CPU is set to a max of 998 and a min of 245... So I assume it ranges between the two limits. Looks to me like I should leave it as it is.

Have you tested withoput data2sd yet? data2sd does slow down phones significantly I find. Even on my class 10 (Which operates at class 6)

Only when I tested it and when it synced it filled up the storage... interesting to hear that Data2SD slows phones down. Would App2SD+ be a better choice then? Do they not work in a similar way?

Its a faster choice yes. The /data partiton has all your apps on it. But also all your settings and data. data2sd moves the entire /data partition to sd, which means every data read is slow.

a2sd+ moves /data/app and /data/dalvik-cache to sd, but /data/data remains on internal. I havent ever seen an performance issues with a2sd+. To my mind it is definitely the better solution.

OK, thanks for this - I will switch to a2sd+ - I'm not even sure why I chose Data2SD in the first place!

Definitely agree!
In addition, data2sd is more of a headache, if something goes wrong with SD card.

totally. Especially with file system unclean dismounts on AOSP. I was worried constantly when I had it. In the end I went back to a2sd+ and was amazed at how much faster my phone felt.

they are not remotely the same

data2sd does exactly that, it moves the whole phoneds data partition to the ext of your sdcard so you can have physical space to what ever you partitioned the card at.

a2sd+ only moves the apps and is only used when the app is called (sometimes it moves dalvic as well) so the general running of the phone is not affected and speed is only when it calls the apps which are usually quite small so will have little lag if at all

data2SD is for huge storage requirements
a2sd is for general purpose and performance with benefits of additional space

Are they not similar indofar as an EXT4 (or EXT3 or whatever) partition is created on the SD card which is used as virtual internal storage?

I created a 1GB EXT4 partition on my SD card - when I get my new card would you advise doing the same for a2sd+?

the only similarity is that they both use ext file system.

on data2sd it tricks the phone into believe the ext file system on your card is actually part of the phone and the whole data partition is moved to it. this is userdata and is called all the time and will affect the general running of the phone

on a2sd only data/app (and sometimes data/dalvic-cache) gets moved meaning the rest of data and userspace is still on the nand (phone hardware) and runs fast

I see.

From what I am reading it seems that a2sd+ is not a totally straightforward install on Cyanogen Mod 7... would be very grateful if someone could point me to some reliable install instructions.

it is, you just have to get the s2e app from the market

Turned out to be fairly easy in the end. Had a bit of trouble getting Gparted to recognise my new card, so I formatted it in Windows 7 and it then recognised it.

I created a 1GB EXT3 partition - possibly more than is necessary, but it works anyway. I read that there was a way of disabling Data2SD by renaming some file, but to be certain I just did a factory reset and installed Cyanogenmod 7 afresh, then s2e.

I notice that there doesn't appear to be much room on the phone (as it does out of the box) but adding loads of apps only reduces the space slightly.

It all seems to run at a decent speed. The only thing that seems to hang or be slow is Dolphin Browser HD. Might uninstall and reinstall to see if that helps.

indeed, a2sd+ works differently. it shows the phones storage and extends it by linking to the partition so its just small decrease.
