Help Phone space

suobs

Newbie
My Android starts to send me warning messages when phone space gets below about 10% free spece. I guess I'm maxed out with apps because when it's running OK it's at about 12-15%. Other than moving new apps to the SD card I really haven't figured out how to control or even see what's taking up space on the phone. The numbers above are from Quicker. Any suggestions like other apps to view and control what's happening?

I don't suppose it's possible to uninstall the apps that came with the phone?

LG Optimus V. Frankly, I don't even know what the available amount of space is on the phone and can't seem to find that info on the phone anywhere.

Welcome to the forums! :)

I've moved your post over here to our Optimus V support area - the cool cats here with your phone can likely give you the best answers to these questions.

You can remove some of the bloatware that comes with your phone - just above the list of threads here is the All Things Root section for your phone, check there for details.

Hope this helps! :)

Try App2SD from the market. It has all the info you seek. If it's best that an app stay on the system then it indicate's this by a little uSD card symbol with an x. It's easy to move apps back and forth or uninstall as well.

One trick I occasionally have to resort to is uninstalling the updates to Google Maps, a built-in, non-removable hog that gets bigger every time. Settings > Manage applications > Google maps > uninstall... that won’t uninstall it but will let uninstall the updates. And the Optimus memory is pretty sad, nothing you can do about that.

The only real thing you can do is root/rom your phone. With IHO and link2sd I have about 200mb free on my phone with about 50 or so apps. I know it sounds scary but just make sure to follow the instructions correctly and you will be fine.

I have moved every app to SD that can move without rooting.

So I manage my phone space by periodically clearing cache. Get any free app like "App Cache Cleaner". The browser, especially, can take up dozens of megabytes but other apps do too. I have 80+ apps and keep around 30 megabytes free.

Our phones have a pitiful amount of storage space, but they are usable if one is careful in what he installs. Remember that messages with images and other files attached can take up a lot of space. Delete any you don't need to keep to free up space as well as clearing app caches and to a lesser degree histories. I second the suggestion to uninstall Google Maps updates. They take up a great deal of space. Do this with other pre-installed apps as well. You can go into market preferences and set all the pre-installed apps that you don't use to never update. That's what I have done. I still use Google Maps without the updates, and it works just fine. App2SD will help somewhat, as would rooting and removing some of the pre-installed apps, but the only real cure is a higher end phone with more storage space. Only keep installed apps that you use regularly. If it's something you only use now and again, uninstall it and reinstall it when needed.

I have downloaded a free app called One Touch Optimization. I use it atleast once a day. It shows you what you have available for Ram and Rom. Allows you to clear the cache and also pick which processes you want it to close. It will also warn that your memory is getting low and that you should press the one touch for cleansing. Hope this helps.:o

I see this issue a lot at my service center. If you use facebook a lot try clearing the cache via manage applications in the settings menu. I've seen facebook caches get up to 120mb (that's huge).

With Gingerbreak and App2SD it opens up a whole world of choices for this hobbled phone. As an added benefit you can delete all the bloatware too. It's not too difficult and there are several threads on the issue here. I noticed that the Optimus Slide is 512mb, much more reasonable.

The Slider only has about 150 meg of user available storage space. I know, my wife just bought one after getting tired of trying find a fully functional Triumph. She returned 4Triumphs and still couldn't get one that had everything working.

Get the app "Sandisk Memory Zone" (with a picture of a squirrel). It will tell you how many apps, how much music, video, extra files are on your phone and SD card. Very helpful and can get rid of some files you didn't know you had on your phone.

You don't need all your apps to always be installed, Installed apps, even when they are moved to your sd card, they still use a small chunk of internal phone memory. This internal memory usage adds up when you have a ton of 'installed' apps, until there is a low internal memory, too low to handle any extra tempoary caches that build up.
I keep most of my downladed apps uninstalled, backed up to the memory sd card. Using a 16 gb card leaves me lots of space, and backup with 'Android Assistant+18', there are other apps that do backup. This keeps the Optimus V's limited memory clear enough so I don't have low memory problems. And when I want to use an app, I can just 'restore' it, and when I'm done using that app, I uninstall it again. This method keeps 'annoying' apps that always respawn, or turn themselves on again after force stopping them, from using the phone's memory/data unnecessarily.

12/16/2012: I would also suggest getting these free apps from the Playstore. Android Assistant+18 by Aaron, File Manager by Rhmsoft, Clean Master, and if your device is rooted, DroidWall.

Android Assistant has a lot of useful tools including an app backup and app to SD card utility.

File Manager is a very good app with no time limit like some other free file managers have.

DroidWall (for rooted devices only) is a nice little 'firewall' app that does not have any 'permissions. It lets you "whitelist/deny" internet access for any installed app. Works great! Especially useful for people who have limited data plans.

Clean Master cleans up caches and old unused data from your device.

Unrooted Optimus V

I had some weird glitch that stopped data for a day, so I backed up to my desktop and did a "return-phone-to-stock" move. Then transferred my data back to the V and went back to the market and reinstalled all my apps. The only hassle was my playlists weren't saved.

With the same number of apps, I got an additional 15% of space.

This might have been because installing and then uninstalling many useless/unwanted apps left cache artifacts even though I removed data and cache before uninstalling.

I imagine it is a bit like Windows itself - it is a good idea to yearly wipe your drive clean and reinstall your OS to get a better running desktop free of 'clutter'.

In line with what iwantbruce was talking about: there is an app in the market for non rooted user's that allows them to save all there apk's to the sd card.
When you first open it up, it will save al your installed apps apk's to the sd card. After that, every time you download an app it will auto save it's apk to the sd card.
You can have as many apk's on your sd card as your sd card can hold. When you need to use one just install it, when done delete. The apk will still be saved on the sd card.
If you download an update for an app and it makes the app useless, just delete it and re-install the old apk.

Here it is App Tyrant
