Help Phone usability question

Hi there. I have just got a Galaxy Nexus to replace my HTC desire and there's something thats bugging me with the phone on the Nexus which someone may be able to help me with I hope? When I dial a number, I want to be able to find a contact by using the letters on the numeric keypad so for example if I dialled 226 on the screen as well as showing "226" it would also show Canton Kitchen as it starts with CAN.

On the Nexus its only showing numbers. I don't want to scroll through all my contacts to find a number - please can someone help me with this as TBH it's a dealbreaker if the new phone can't be as usable as the HTC.

it should be working like that i do not know why yours does not?
check your contacts again.

I think there are some custom dialer apps that you can get to replace it that do what you want. Try searching this forum as I know I have recently seen this exact same request and someone posted the name of a dialer app that did that.

Alternatively, on the dialpad screen there is a magnifying glass. If you click that a keyboard pops up and you can start searching by name.

EDIT: Dialer One is the app I have seen recommended. I use the stock contacts app to find people so I can't comment on any of the alternate dialers.

That feature is something that comes from HTC Sense. Stock Android does not have it. As suggested above look for a dialer app that does this.

or just start typing in search bar on the homescreen.....don't even open the dialer.

This. Any letters from the name (first or last) should start suggesting all contacts that fit the criteria. Touch the search bar, start hitting letters.

I've never scrolled for a contact in Android my life.
