Help Play Store Problem

I am receiving the dreaded "package file invalid" on my N4 when attempting to download anything from Play while connected to wifi.

So far I've:

  • Factory reset (twice)
  • Cleared play store app data/cache
  • Uninstalled Play Store Updates
  • Forgot and reconnected to wifi
  • Rebooted
  • Cleared data for Google services framework
  • Stood naked in an inverted pentagram and spoke in Latin

Other relevant symptoms/information

  • The play store works perfectly on mobile data (AT&T HSPA+)
  • Play Store on all other android devices works perfectly on wifi (SGH-i777, SGH-i897, Asus T101 and probably a few others I can't recall)
  • Play Store app on N4 ver. 3.10.7, on SGS2 3.9.16
  • Android version on N4 4.2 JOP40C (Android version on SGS2 4.1.2)

Frankly, I can't think of what to try next.

Is this just on your home wifi or have you tried it on a different wifi network? I'm asking because it could be conflicting with your specific router. Resetting the router and possibly updating the firmware couldn't hurt.

Ugghhhh! Talk about accidentally sitting on a crown (a royal pain in the ... you get the idea ;) )

I think I have this working now.

I found that if I was connected to Wifi when I opened the play store I would almost always be presented with a "no connection - retry" message. In usually took several retries before the store would connect. If I tried to update any app, it would fail with "package file invalid". If I tried to download any app bigger than 800kb it would do the same. By if i tried a small app (tried a 70k and a 280k app) they would succeed over wifi. Remember that the play store worked for any app on mobile data.

I continued to try just about everything including:

  • Factory reset and changing Google accounts.
  • Setting static IP using Google's DNS servers
  • Using neighbor's Wifi
  • Removing SIM
  • Uninstalling Play Store update (from 3.10.9 back to 3.9.17)
  • Banging my head repeatedly on my desk while inventing new ways to describe what is essentially a digestive process

What FINALLY got me to be able to update and download large apps was this in these EXACT steps.

  1. Force Close Google Play Store app
  2. Clear Google Play Store Cache
  3. Clear Google Play Store data
  4. Clear Google Play Store defaults
  5. Reboot phone

The one step that seemed to be eluding me was force closing the play store first.

Hopefully this is the end of that, but will update this thread if it rears it's ugly head again.

Spoke too soon.

Just tried to push a few apps to the phone and it did it again. Now, the previous "fix" didn't work.
