Play store update killing my data plan.

Yeah, Lucky Patcher must have run out of luck before it got to me because it didn't work. :banghead:

Only update on wifi probably won't work for me because I use the wifi at the public library all the time.:o

I sideload everything these days. Play is gone on all devices in my home running Android. Also disable talkback agent. I'm not too keen on anything that phones home

That statement is a bit ironic. You're afraid of an app that you deem nefarious. Yet you give up the protection that the Play store offers from hacked and malicious apps.

Many things phone home. You use Windows on your PC, when you're gaming? That phones home all the time. What apps are you side-loading and where are they coming from, what's the sources? Myself, I'm not in favour of apps phoning home to Beijing or Shenzhen  if I can help it. The iTunes App Store on iOS phones home doesn't it? And you can't side-load anything on that, unless jailbroken.

BTW I just made friends with someone today, stopped me in the street near the school, wants to practise his English. Tuns out he's an Android app developer from Beijing. Could be interesting and insightful talking to him.

If you are using a physical cable on a computer, at least you can pull it.

There is no way to stop a download - the phone won't turn off fast enough.

I've clicked on the wrong skin for ADW, and had to wait and delete.

The apps that concern me are the paid ones that need to check to make sure that you HAVE paid for them. I have a few of those. Most stuff does work with all connections off. I turn off connections when I don't have one just to keep the phone from searching for one.

The last few virii and malicious scares came from Play if I recall correctly. Also, most of what I sideload are apk backups from past Android devices on Dropbox. Only paid apps I get from Amazon.

If I understand correctly, you are worried about your data use? What you dl while on wifi doesn't count against your data, does it?

Maybe that is a good option, after all?

If you came across a malicious app in the Play store then you should report it to Google. If an app's permissions concern you or it suspicious then don't download it. If you accidentally click download, click the "X" to stop it. Apps don't need the play store to update and apps don't "call home" through the Play store either. Side-loading is far more risky than the Play store. It's easier to hack an app than you might think.

Well, I don't have to pay extra if I go over but everything gets real slow. Main thing is that I have to keep uninstalling the updates

Yup, however Google cares enough to remove them, as soon as they're reported. I believe Play has a remote kill function as well, just in case anyone does download something undesirable from Play. They can't go vetting every dev who wants to submit their apps to Play.

Probably just as well, considering that it's a cracking tool to hack paid apps. Lord knows what crud it might have introduced to your device. ;)

Congrats on find a solution anyway, even if it does require root. Hopefully this will be of use to others who find themselves in the same position.
