Playing GIFs

Why do GIFs literally flash in a blink of an eye? They are shown properly on the list folder, but when you press play their over in less than 1/2 a second. Any ideas?
Do I need an app?

I dont think the phone supports gif images (although I may be wrong)

I have a gif that works fine in the standard photo gallery but not the nexus 3d gallery. Also the web browser does not work with gifs.
