Help Please Help! Dial Pad issue when in a call...Proximity Sensor issue?

Hi all,

I absolutely love my Gnex. I got it on launch day, and for the most part I have not had a ton of issues. However, there is one thing that I am having a hard time dealing with, and I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with it. When I dial a number with the stock dialer I have no issues at all. After I connect and when I need to bring up the number pad to enter extensions, voicemail, or whatever else, my number pad "short circuits." I only can describe it like a flickering everytime my fingers come close to push a number. It disappears when I go to push them and reappears when I take my finger away. I almost have to time it right when trying to access my voicemail just to push the numbers I need. I have tried holding the phone in different locations because I am aware that there is a proximity sensor....but it seems to me that what is happening really shouldn't be. Is there a setting I can change? Please help me....I really would like to clear this issue up as its the only thing from making my GNex close to perfect.

Thanks!

just the keyboard or the whole screen?

there is a sensor that will turn of the whole screen, it can be disabled though... I'll see if I can find the setting for you...

You know what... I can't find it, maybe they took it out on ICS :/

I actually have an issue with my dial pad as well once I get into a call, but it's a different issue. Whenever I dial my voice mail, for example, and it tells me to enter I pass code, I do so and it tells me it's incorrect anywhere from 3 - 5 times, and then eventually it lets me log in. I have the same issue when I've dialed in for a conference call and it asks me to enter the access code or something along those lines...I'll enter '1111' and it tells me that the pass code I enter '555446' is not correct. It's pretty annoying. I've already had the phone replaced 3 times for this issue among many others. Not as great of a phone as I thought it'd be, so many annoying problems!

Download the app "sensor test" from the market (free -by AtmoWorker).

Open it.

The readout for "Proximity Sensor" should be:

0: 5.0
1: 0.0
2: 0.0

Those numbers shouldn't change unless something (your finger) comes within about an inch of the proximity sensor which is located just to the right of the ear speaker. When something gets close to that sensor, the first readout should go to 0.0.

If your numbers are any different, take it back to the store and show them you have a bad proximity sensor. Happened to me with my original Droid 2 years ago.

Do you have the speaker phone on when doing this? I had the same issue and it has something to do with the mic picking up the tones from the speaker. now i turn the speaker phone off when using the touchpad and that fixed it.

I'm having the exact same issue as greenmonster described. For myself I usually am using the ear buds that came with the phone. It ends up becoming a game to see if you can press the dialpad, uggghhh. I would love to figure out if this is a hardware issue or can be resolved in a software update.

+1 Driving me nuts.

Other issue is keyed-in passcodes aren't understood (e.g. for conference call codes, passwords, etc.).

Are you guys running the sensor test to verify you don't have a faulty proximity sensor? Also, do any of you have a screen protector that is covering it and may be interfering?

I had the same problem - the display was turning off as soon as I tried to press a key.

I finally realized that my other fingers were covering the proximity sensor

I have a similar issue, except mine is when I use the dial pad while in a call, such as an automated system , then I bring the phone back to my face , the proximity sensor doesn't kick in and I end up pushing buttons with my face. Very frustrating and only started with 4.0.4 roms. I assume its a .4 issue and just deal with it for now.

I actually have had the same problem with the whole screen flickering while in call, but its usually just once then it works fine as far as entering numbers.

Anyone else with 4.0.4 having proximity sensor delay issues?

This also happens and goes wonky at times and most of the time i have no issue

what I do when it goes wonky is press the home button, then go into the call app from the dropdown notification bar
