Please help, new SGS2 running Jelly Bean - freezing issue

Hey guys, I need some help with my new phone. It's my first Android smartphone so it's a bit of a learning curve, but I'm used to Linux computers so maybe that'll help.

The phone is a Galaxy S2 on Sprint/Virgin Mobile. I received it 2 days ago with Jelly Bean/Root already installed. It worked fine for about 5-6 hours, and then suddenly restarted on its own. When it came back on, the screen locked after a few seconds and it shut down again. This continued overnight, and in the morning I contacted the person who installed JB on the phone. He said he had not performed a factory reset, and that might fix the problem.

I did the factory reset, and it cured THAT problem (so far). The phone stopped restarting on its own/immediately locking up.

HOWEVER, since then the screen has locked up 2 times. The power button still works, and the home button still vibrates when you touch it (but it has no effect), and the volume buttons and screen do nothing. When I restart the phone it works fine, but for all the apps I downloaded the shortcuts have disappeared. If I download a new app, all the shortcuts re-appear.

Here's all my phone info...

Version:

PDA: SPH-D710VMUB.FL14

PHONE: S:D710.10 S.FL14

CSC: D710VMULS1

It's there kernel. Flash a stock kernel with out cwm in it it'll be fine had same exact issues

Let me guess the paid apps are magically gone after battery pull or restart, happens when you restore from nandroid back up also

If you're using the leaked JB from Virgin, I installed it before too. It was perfectly fine for a few days to a week and then started crashing constantly. So I had to uninstall it.

Ive been running it for 2weeks. I have no freezes what soever, did you use the rooted restore on sxtp developers.

The apps aren't actually fully gone, just the shortcuts disappear.

Forgive my ignorance, but everything about these phones is new to me. How would I "flash a stock kernal without cwm"? And you think this would fix the problem? What would it be changing, exactly? Thanks for the response!

I can only assume it was the leaked JB; The previous owner bought the phone, installed JB, and decided not to use it with Virgin, so he never activated it. I bought it the way it is. Hopefully I don't have to uninstall it, I enjoy the operating system when it's running correctly.

It's been about 36 hours since the last freeze, so far, but I imagine it will happen again. What do you mean by "rooted restore on sxtp developers"? The only troubleshooting I did was initially clear the cache, and when that had no effect I did a factory reset (power&volume up&home button>factory reset>yes).

There is a known freezing issue with the first downloads of this rom that uses Superuser.

You must download the rom from the links in the third post (or second post?) of the SXTP thread for the FL14 Jellybean rom. They are listed as the "Alternate Root Downloads". Those use SuperSU instead of Superuser and works beautifully. No freezing.

Also, as stated above in a previous post, the Agats Repack kernel for FL14 has some serious issues with paid apps in Google Play Store. I would stay away from Agats on the FL14 build.

If you bought the phone used with a custom ROM on it, I would wipe everything and start fresh. Install b_randon14's CM 10.1, he updated it 2 days ago.

There's a lot that can go wrong when flashing a ROM/ lots of ways to do it incorrectly so I'd say start fresh and make sure you do it right.

Maybe go as far as get wilco's oneclick stock installer and install that fresh (you get back the ICS modem right?). Then from there install a custom recovery and install b_randon14's latest release and you'll be off and running!
