Root PLEASE HELP, Want to root an HTC Design

NoBrikz

Newbie
I have an HTC Design, I tried rooting it with HTCsupertoolsver3 and needless to say it didnt work, so I went ahead and unlocked the bootloader, tried again and still no root. Now I know its because of that update back in January.....

My question is what is my next option ? How can I root this phone ?

Again its an HTC Design (I unlocked the bootloader), HBOOT Version 1.26.0000..... Android Version 2.3.4....... HTC Sense Version 3.0....

Please Help.... Thanks in Advance

First you'll need to re-flash ClockWorkRecovery:

http://androidforums.com/evo-design-all-things-root/578856-clockworkmod-download-links.html

Use Volume Down + Power to boot into CWM or use a reboot widget to get to it.

Once you got CWM running, run this installer via the "install update from SDCard" menu in CWM: (use volume up/down to navigate through menus and power to select)

http://androidforums.com/evo-design-all-things-root/562206-working-cwm-root-zip.html

Then reboot back into Android. If SuperUser is acting strange, then go to app settings and clear it's cach/data and that should clear things up.

I was starting to think this was impossible, for the record I am running software number 2.12.651.8 71ord, will your method work with this ?

I am in the middle of downloading something called RUU_Kingdom_Sprint_WWE_1.19.651.0_Radio_1.11.00.0812_NV_NV_SPCS_2.60_0708_PRL51079_release_209668_signed.exe

Then Im supposed to relock my phone, then unlock it, flash, and not sure what else... Sounds very complicated, I got that from some other forums.

This way your telling me will make my life easier and not have to go thru all that ? Please say yes and thanks a million. Am going to start reading up on what you suggested right now, may have some questions....

Another thing I just realized, the phone is a Sprint version will this method still work ?

Again thanks ALOT!!!!!:D

Just realized the disclaimers stating those are meant for the boost version of the phone, which is my end goal. I'll explain.

Im trying to root the phone so I can get MSL/SPC code, so that further on I can try to flash this phone for use on Boost.

Its sort of a little project I have going.

What do you suggest I do ?

The root installer while not tested on Sprint, it should work since all it does is install busybox, su, and SuperUser + alter their permission levels.

If your about to port the phone to Boost, then you could just flash my stock root from here:

http://androidforums.com/evo-design...78-root-stock-rooted-rom-no-cwm-required.html

This is full stock ICS intended for Boost Mobile phones which should work for you if you got the phone ported to Boost Mobile or working on getting it ported.

Running a Boost rom on a Sprint phone usually requires changing the MMS URL to get MMS working, but you may also not need to do that either. But then again I'm not 100% sure roms change the URL when flashed since the MMS URL is set using a hidden menu code.

Also I think the alogcat method of getting the MSL code should still work on this phone. Perhaps not on ICS though so try it first on your gingerbread stock rom (once your rooted via that CWM root installer) first.

I thank you for helping me and apologize in advance for asking so many questions but I read your reply at about 10 this morning and it is now about 4pm and Im still stuck. I didnt want to bombard you with questions so tried every which way for anything and am still stuck, lol... This is where I am :

Alogcat didnt work for me, I tried for about an hour, I get it, the log comes up but I cant find MSL, CODE or SPC, I have looked for them and even tried using the filter none come up... I looked into the CDMA method but cant find that software for free and read that one of the free versions that comes up on google comes with viruses... Also tried something called RevSkills, also not working....

I saved PH44IMG to my sd card and also changed to SPC_001 in the text file as it says in the thread for sprint. It loads and after a while the text turns orange I believe it says "Parsing" then goes back to the bootloader menu quickly, I never get a chance to press up to flash or even read what it says after the "Loading" phase.....

Im fairly new to this but never had such a problem messing with a phone, As I told you this is a disconnected Sprint but I want to turn it into a Boost....

Please let me know what Im doing wrong, or how you suggest I go about doing this. Do I flash to boost first and if so how ? Or do I need to root, then flash to boost....

After reading the threads it's clear you are the go to guy for these phones, your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!!!

This too was happening to me, in your hboot yes ? I couldn't figure it out until hboot old version crap started so I used apache thunder's set main version low.zip fixed it for me. Dont know if you can flash his zip on a sprint phone or not ?

yes in HBoot it tries to load up PH44IMG (I believe it starts too because it stays on loading for about 4 mins) then the screen just flashes quickly, I think the word "Parsing" flashes on the screen, then it goes back to Hboot's main screen. I have no clue what to do, I never got that "older version" error I keep reading about. Kinda stuck, been working on this phone for about 3 days now and dont even know what to try next.

Where can I find that file your talking about ?

Please Anybody ? Im still trying to flash this Sprint phone to boost mobile, and then root it. I have no clue what to do, or how to proceed whatsoever.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you unlocked the hboot using htcdev website?

When you boot into hboot what does the top say?

From the hboot when you select "recovery" what do you get?

Do you still have the stock recovery?

Do you have CWM on the device yet?

Do you have root yet?

I just flashed a Sprint Design to Boost. Hardest part was acquiring root.

there is an app to get that MSL code your looking for. Just google it a bit. i dont remember what it was. i just know it was pretty much a 1 click thing

On most android phones you can download Terminal Emulator from the market and execute the command

getprop ril.MSL

to get your MSL. No root required.

The biggest exception to that are HTC devices. Those are only known to give it up for MSLReader from the market. But for that to work you have to have root.

i too have the same problem. but mine is on boost. it is unlocked, says it in hboot on the top left corner highlighted in pink. and at first i got the mainver is older. so i changed it to the other one apache thunder supplied and now it loads but it'll say for a second parsing and then back to hboot. i have tried doing a factory reset. i am at my wits end. i have even asked apache thunder and no response after i told him the problem and yes usb debugging is on. and no cwm. cause apache clearly states no cwm recovery needed, phone is all stock except for being unlocked

It is unlocked thru the HTCDev Site.

When I log into Hboot the top says:
****UNLOCKED****
Kingdom PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-1.30.0000
RADIO-1.11.00.0418_2
eMMC-BOOT
Mar 26 2012, 16:07:45

When I try Recovery it the HBoot Menu it reset my phone and put it in download mode and then showed like a red yield sign over the phone, it stays stuck there, I just have to reboot after that

My phone is completely stock right now except for being unlocked

I dont have CWM

I am not rooted

I have no clue what to do, I decided to get back to this project today and am hoping to get it working, I did however get a prompt for an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, Android Version 4.0, 3.14.651.0719RD. I tried using Apaches PH144IMG after the update and the samething happens it says loading, then PARSING flashes on the screen and nothing happens after that and Im not able to flash. I also changed the info.txt file to spc 001 (I tried both spc 001 and 003). Still nothing.

Again its on Sprint, and my goal is to have it rooted and working on Boost Mobile.

The red yield sign is stock recovery. You have not flashed cwm recovery for the phone. It is done with a command like

fastboot flash boot cwm12345.zip.img

I wish there was an easier way to get your MSL on the HTC devices... but without your MSL/SPC you cannot proceed. Unless you feel like buying the latest version of CDMA ws. The old cracked one is of no use.

If u are trying to root I have no idea why you need an msl. Eitherway Msl reader from the play store works fine for the MSL.

The info you are changing on your android-info.txt is the CID just because it starts with spc has nothing to do with your spc/msl code. Which if you have the correct cwm recovery you do not need to change at all.

Problems parsing the PH144IMG.zip usually are a result of the firmware version not matching the mainver field in the android-info.txt

I think this issue has been beaten like a dead horse almost every week. Search the forums. There is plenty of flashing recoveries and rooting threads to last a lifetime.

OK had time to re read all this.

Now for flashing a CDMA phone to another carrier will prove a bit of a challenge. Talking from experience. MSL reader as I mentioned can be downloaded via Google play store. QPST is the software you will need to do the actual flashing. But mind you most of the YouTube videos you find will deal with GSM. What I am saying is that APNs are hell yo get going right in CDMA unless you know what you are doing. If using sense based software you will need apk tool and edit your framework-res as the APN are hard coded in there. CDMA seems as I understand to read the first entry only from the apn XML. If using AOSP you will need also to set your APNs differently.

Now as far as rooting and installing recovery. Seems like your firmware number and the mainver number of the android-txt.info don't match. I see you are changing your Carrier Identification (CID) in that file. If you downloaded the correct version of cwm for your phone then you should not have to even touch that. Also I have no idea what you are editing the file with but if on windows use notepad+ not notepad.

Read the threads this issue comes up frequently I think you can find your answers if you look at similar threads.

I have searched the threads and found a a few different PH44IMG files, non of them seem to work. When I edit the (CID) I am just opening the file as default it opens with Notepad and editing and saving. If Im correct you said I should you notepad+ ? I didnt even know that existed, just googled it, it comes up as Notepad++ from Notepad++ Home

Please let me know of thats what you were referring to. I really wish there was one thread with step by step instructions like for most other things on here. I have tried for weeks, researching the forum and everytime I think I found a new lead, I end up downloading, flashing etc and nothing..

I am going to give you the best off memory walkthrough. Also I will pm you the link for the recovery to use. The reason my walk through is from memory is because I don't run a Windows system so in essence I use a different editor.

Download 7zip (Google it) and notepad++

Download the recovery zip file.

For not uncompress the zip. Just use 7zip to view the archive. Right click the android-txt.info file and use notepad++ to edit it and then make sure the mainver field matches your firmware number.

Save

Make sure the file name is PH144IMG.zip place on SD card and it should load.
