Yea you can root with a locked bootloader. Motorola devices are an example.

I find it a bit odd that lg wants to lock the bootloader now with the update... It's been unlocked this whole time. But that's probably not an issue... There are bootstrap apps to allow romming on locked devices.
The biggest thing I've seen in the lock down has been that the kernel checks the video.apk and all the drm files on the device. I wouldn't be surprised if this was put into place to prevent videos from being ripped while streaming. Then again, I always believe the MPAA and RIAA are up to stuff in secret.

I connected my spectrum to the computer and its doing a update now. I was already on the latest update. Maybe this will be ICS, I will know in 7 minutes I guess.

**edit***
That was a bust. The phone is still on 2.3.6...Oh well

I'm tempted to try it. But I don't want to do it and wind up with a locked bootloader.

I'm in the same boot as you. If it was dropped right after I heard the news I would have taken it in a heartbeat; but now that I've had some time to mull over it in my head, I'm thinking it's not a wise decision to take the upgrade for those of us who enjoy customizing our phones with roms and such.

I would really be mad at myself if I took the update and then not long after cm10 was available and I had no way to get it. This is a tough situation. I'm leaning more towards holding out and just flashing back to the leak.

But I guess I'm confused... I didn't think the bootloader was tied to the kernel and rom. I thought that was related to the hardware and it's configuration.

And not to mention, do we know for sure it will be locked? I kinda skimmed, but how did this info come out? It's certainly not in the vz documentation.

all the leaks are locked down. And the devs have a full system dump of the update and it's locked down. Thats why we never got a flashable fully functioning copy of it.

I was just speaking with someone who informed me that it's not a big deal flashing back to gb after taking the ota so I'm back to taking it :D

Oh so we could just use the tool to go back to gb if we wanted to flash cm9 and other roms, even if we installed the v7?

I was told that the .tot or cab method should work fine. The devs use it all the time. I was told that they can't be 100 percent sure it would work with the update because no one has tried with the official version yet but those methods work on the leak no problem. So it should work fine with the update.

.cab method should work, Ive done it a few times. But if u install CWM recovery ur 4g and imei is nuked. Just ordered a clnr today.

neph warned you not to do it :p

Just to be clear. You are referring to installing recovery while on the official version of ics.

Once you've gone back to GB then you are fine.

Maybe someone should capture some performance numbers on StockGB, so they can be compared with Stock ICS, and one of the modded ROMS.

I've been following this thread support.lgforum.com/lg/topics/any_good_word_for_spectrum_owners_awaiting_ics

Advice was given to have enough memory available for the update and why it's necessary. Also, the guy said it' suppose to be pushed late Tuesday. He apparently has a reliable inside source. It's the last or near last post in this thread.

Interesting. My inside sources at vzw don't show that, but then again there was no prior notice for the Lucid ics either. lol :)

I'm just glad it's heading our way. I switched from the Rezound to the Spectrum and once you've had ice cream, life just isn't the same without it.
