PLEASE READ: Reguarding the 2.1 Update for the Motorola Droid

Though I have never posted in this forum, I have been following quite a few threads. I just had to call verizon for an issue unrelated to the 2.1 OTA update, but asked about it while I had someone on the phone. The response I received was, "My system says the update was approved on 3/16 and began to roll out on 3/18 in stages to prevent the network from crashing. We are doing this by geographic location, so it probably is not available in your area yet. We have nothing to do with this update. The droid is simply a device that we allow on our network, however, the software and all updates are controlled by google. You will just have to wait until your phone notifies you."

I just got off the phone with Verizon for an issue, they had me check my phones OS number and said "it was out of date" and I should have gotten a text to accept an update. They told me to call Motorola to get it pushed to me. They gave me some cryptic number to ask Motorola about: AP: ESE53/BP: C_01.3E.03P and before I called, I Googled that and that seems to be VZW code name for 2.1??

so, not sure if VZW is showing the update despite the fact we have not gotten the text. I did not call Motorola to ask yet and I will play dumb when I do.

Here are update directions on VZW site.

an interesting note in it "If you are roaming you will not receive a system update notice. You will need to enable Wi-Fi and wait for the update notice to appear. After you've received first notification of the system update you can manually initiate at any time by going to "Home" > "Menu" > "Settings" > "About phone" > "System updates"."

And if any of you end up with the update, please take the time to pull the update.zip off of your sdcard before carrying on, you should never leave your bro's hanging.

It really does not make any sense to me at all.

The Milestone is being released now with 2.1 PREINSTALLED! So.... The milestone is the droid (only locked down of course) so it isn't some random "bug" that was found because if it was, there wouldnt be any Milestones with the release either......

And before one more person comes in here and says "JUST ROOT!!BLA BLA", some of us don't care/want to bother with installing 9 million different ROMs, re-installing all of our apps, re-doing our settings and home screens every time a new ROM comes out. To me, its not even about the new features really. I don't care or need 9 homescreens. I don't need live wallpapers.... What I want is a faster, more stable OS. Again, my phone IS rooted, but I didn't install a new ROM. I just want the plain-old OTA with no more corporate BS. /rant LoL

Hi, my name is Pablo S. How may I help you? [11:59:59 AM]
Andrew: Hi yes I was wondering how I could get the new software update fro my droid. I called verizon and they said to have you push it to me [12:00:22 PM]
Andrew: it is the 2.1 software [12:00:32 PM]
Pablo S: Let me help you with that. [12:01:02 PM]
Andrew: AP: ESE53/BP: C_01.3E.03P [12:01:04 PM]
Andrew: thank you [12:01:38 PM]
Pablo S: The 2.1 version hasn't been released yet, it has been sent to test users, not to everyone. When it comes out, the phone itself will download it. [12:01:40 PM]
Andrew: ok so is there an estimate? I know all droids in other country already have it [12:02:42 PM]
Pablo S: It should be released by the end of the month. That is the idea. [12:02:59 PM]
Andrew: ok well thank you very much for your help [12:03:13 PM]
Pablo S: No problem [12:03:20 PM]
Pablo S: Any other question? [12:03:22 PM]
Andrew: that is it [12:03:26 PM]
Pablo S: Well then, have a great day. If you need any more information get in touch. Thanks from Motorola, bye! [12:03:35 PM]
Andrew: thank you [12:03:43 PM]
'Andrew' disconnected ('Concluded by End-user'). [12:03:47 PM]

Verizon should have just allowed Motorola to post the update on their site for...'early updaters' just like Milestone users. Leave the OTA's for people who don't otherwise care. This distribution model they are trying to force everyone to use just sucks, esp for the gadget enthusiast crowd which is where most of the discontent is comming from.

My theory is that they sent out the 1000 to Verizon employees. There really is nothing wrong at all, they are just trying to figure out who is leaking ROM's and info. They are reading everywhere on the internet trying to see if someone leaks the update file, and they may or may not have something in place to find out who it was. Who knows though, I think I just have too much time on my hands at the moment. Sounds like something a big corporation might do though, trying to bring the mole to the surface.

also been following various motorola/verizon tweets and 'people' from various sources consistently are saying they are going to be going for another test run tomarrow with hopeful results so that everyone can 'enjoy 2.1 by the beginning of next week'... this follows exactly with that link so im not sure if these are people simply jumping on the bandwagon with hopes too high. yet as milestone is pushed to 2.1 now i don't see how the droid can be ignored much longer... the pressure cooker is about to burst!! ;p

if theres no new homescreens tho, which is the overall consensus then i really could care less about the update ;\ it'd be nice to get this thing updated though to stop the anticipation. is third time really the charm?

Well, the Milestone gets bluetooth support and up to 9 homescreens. Not that I need 9 homescreens (3 really suffice just fine for me) But for those who want more, hopefully it comes over to the Droid. It would be insane for them to restrict the OS that bad for US people....

3 screens just do not satisfy me, so im going to try helix launcher which enables up to 7.. the fact is, i need a full home screen for my agenda and/or calendar to keep up to date for my college assignments/due dates. yeh i could just use an icon but its much simpler on a homescreen like the eris. another screen is used for basic things such as my phone/contacts/time.date/weather widgets... the third screen i use for various apps i use most often such as twitter and newsrob. having an additional couple of screens would be great! it would allow me to use my notes widget, allow me to use 'better' widgets (i have to use all small ones to compromise the lack of homescreens) and let me add additional programs i use without dragging the drop box up and searching that way. I'm not looking for 7, and especially not 9 screens (that is way overdoing it) but i see 5 screens as just enough to give me what I want. if only droid would go the milestone way... :o

I just received a notice in my notification bar requesting my permission. It sure looks like an update and I don't want to allow it since I'm rooted. But the curiosity is killing me. Makes me want to click on the little white exclamation mark at the top left of my screen.

Did you update Google Voice? After I applied the latest update, I received that notification asking for permission to allow Google Voice to access my gmail account.

I know this isn't the right forum, but since you brought it up, how the heck do I get GV? Yes I have "applied" many times, but I haven't heard anything. It's been months. Is there a trick? I really dont want to BUY an invitation on ebay ffs.

Thanks, sorry for the intrusion
