Poor HDMI Review for Evo

Too many factors can cause artifacts, so I agree, but still doubt the device will output 720p content smoothly, unless low bit rates. Chipset does not seem to have the juice to output to an external display and give the same result as a Blu-ray or even an Oppo brand level DVD player with upscan. If it does, I would like to see if artifacts kick in after about 15 minutes due to lack of adequate heat dissipation.

There are too many factors that may cause artifacts, but as to why you think one of the reasons being the EVO can't do 720p still confuses me.

PCMag tested a 480p signal, I don't see how you can speculate anything about 720p with that kind of testing parameters. On top of this PCMag said Youtube HQ played fine.

You may believe that the EVO will have trouble doing 720p, I just don't know why you needed a poor review from PCMag to tell you so. From what I can tell, the review had nothing to do with HD Content, but more so with standard def.

If PCMag said, "We tested 720p footage on our HDTV and it was choppy" then I would actually agree with your assessment, but that's not what PCMag said.

Neodorian.. 1280x720 would be 720p. Not sure if you were trying to talk about 720p video so just saying. Anyway I think we need to get back to the fact of.. Only way to know is to test it ourselves when we actually get an EVO but this discussion is about PC Mag doing a poor review of a feature on a phone.

Some people here wouldn't know HD if it bit them in their arse. Haha

Says the poster who thinks that AVI files and HD are apparently mutual exclusive entities...

Next week and all will be known :) My bet is you folks are expecting too much out of this form factor and Sprint marketing are not helping calm this perception.

I just don't understand why you're coming from where you're coming from.

  • The EVO uses a Snapdragon processor, the 1ghZ version being well known for being able to process 720p video.
  • The EVO has an HDMI port that has been a major selling point for Sprint. Screwing up that feature by putting out garbastic video seems like a mistake that Sprint wouldn't make.
  • Finally and most importantly, in all of the demonstration notes / videos / reviews besides this one (which is using a 480p video using godknowswhatbitrate) that I've seen, the quality of the outputted video through the HDMI was never dumped on.

Basically, all of the evidence points to the HD being fine. I don't give the form factor that much clout given the evidence.

All of that said, you're right, we'll see what it can do when we get our hands on it. I just don't think HTC is going to disappoint here.

they said it only played videos. So it plays youtube? Can you display sprint TV to your tv using HDMI?

"Not necessarily" to YT or Sprint TV.

I think this has evolved into more of a conversation about the potential capabilities of the hardware.

Well hopefully sprint would release an update. It would be awesome to be able to display ESPN to the TV, even if the picture is not the best.

I think this review was used to help out the Apple world... Because you know they just can't ever admit that anything is better than an Isuck device... They should say when you play SD content thought the device it is the same as the Iphone/Itouch, but when you play HD content it opens our eyes outside the Apple infested world and allows us to see how much better android is and will be over the Isuck devices....

Also did anyone read the review on how much the Ipads youtube sucked on it because it used youtube formated for the Iphone screen size...

Yeah it seems to have. I guess on that note I wonder if the fact that it will only output video and slideshows via HDMI has to do with HDCP rights. HDMI can be extremely finicky at times but I confess I really don't pay attention to what 1.3 and 1.4 provide.

What makes you people believe this phone has the power to play/output HD content? can you please give me an example? .avi isn't HD

Noo... Get Google TV when it gets out! ;)

Regardless, the display is sweet :)

Already have one.

I think that a properly encoded 720p video will look just fine. The review obviously sucked. They took a DVD quality (or below) video file and tried to put it on the big screen. For all we know, their TV could suck at upscaling and THAT is why the low quality video looked even lower quality.

We''ll know soon enough...

I never said it was a full movie. Well since you seem to be the videophile expert. What can you tell me about the mpeg-2 format? And you can get 32gb cards online for just over 100$

i call bs on the 100$ 32gb because sandisk is selling them for 200... for a class 2

Even still, the HDMI out would be very nice if you can output the actual phone display content (for games and web surfing) and get sound as well.

Does the EVO provide this function or only video content (MP4)? My N900 outputs the actual phone display content, but only composite :(
I'm interested in an answer to this question as well...the possibilities of recording the live video on the camcorder from the EVO to an external drive (or devices) via HDMI cable (bypassing the EVO inferior encoding) seems intriguing, albeit impractical for most, I would still like to know if this can be done...
