Poor radios?

I'm dealing with the issue where my signal goes from full to nothing too, like VolsMcFalls is talking about. I'm dropping both data and voice like a bad habit. I've had my sim card replaced and the phone replaced once with no improvement.

I don't see it listed anywhere to confirm that I have the I515.10 or I515.09 and I didn't see it on my first phone but there's a sticker in my new phone behind the battery, different from the first phone, that reads:

Code:
Model: SCH-I515 V
12.01 [BARCODE HERE]

However when I boot into fastboot, it reads "HW version 10". So I'm going assume I'm rocking I515.10.

Now Verizon has opened an NRB Ticket which I believe is related to a network issue and gets you to Tier 2 support.

//// Side note: I got to Tier 2 support the last time I talked to them and the guy tells me that the Gnex is his favorite phone and he's an expert on it... 2 minutes later, he's opening a ticket and he asks: So is this the regular Samsung Galaxy Nexus or is it the SIII? So clearly they're not the cream of the crop. ////

They're telling my that it can't be the phone if it's happening on the replacement, so it must be the network. So they're actually going to have some techs checking out the network in my area. At this point they ask me for some addresses for where my issue is occurring. I give them some but tell them that I don't have to be in an any particular location and that it's happening everywhere, even outside my local area. The most frustrating part is that my call dropped twice while I was on the latest call with them and they had to call back. I guess they got a little taste of my frustration.

The phone works much better when I switch it to 3G, but I'm not telling them that because I'm worried that they'll just tell me to keep it there, not that I'll stand for that. I'd really like my problem fixed. I dig stock android and don't really want to go to another phone. I guess if I had to I could handle the SIII, but I think the bootloader is still locked, so no stock that way.

Anyhow, sorry for the book. The fact of the matter is, this seems to be all too common and it's not getting fixed. And I'm pretty sure I'm stuck with it for another year and a half.

Are there any apps which can track your signal strength, or even just connectivity? I would like something which shows how often the phone is dropping its connection. My GNex appears to be behaving, although I did catch one noticeable drop this morning. But my wife's phone is just having a lot of issues.

Yeah, check out No Signal Alert. It can alert you if your signal drops and keeps a record of it. If you get the paid version it will even place it on a map for you. Watch out though, it might just make you even more frustrated how much you lose signal.

sounds like everybody regrets their purchase. I guess I see why so many people jumped ship now.

are you going to sell your gnexes soon for something new?

Anything cool coming?

the motorola razr is absolutely hideous I wouldnt get caught dead with that.

I love my Gnex, I don't know of any other phone currently out I'd rather have.

For me I've found the signal strength "acceptable" but defiantly not good. I've been bad signal places were my old Dinc would have signal and the Gnex doesn't.

That said, I'm "in-process" of getting a replacement phone(related to my own stupidity not the phone) and I'm fairly concerned what the replacement will be like. I have my fingers crossed for a "new" one and not a refurbished one. I trust the "refurbishing" places about as far as I couldn't spit.

I could EASILY see some stupid tech, sending a phone back out that's been returned multiple times hoping the next person won't be bothered be its issues.

I have in call mute and data drop problems but I love this devise. I will have to jump if an update/fix isn't found

I had a similar issue with incredible early on with problems and I stuck with it and was very happy I did.

If it's any indictment of Samsung, I had one way mute issues on my Samsung charge which use the exact same radios as the nexus. But oddly enough, I have never gotten it with my nexus. I've had data & voice drops with excellent signal though. Not as many data drops since the 4.04 radios were released though.

You can see for sure what hardware version you are running by going to Settings > About Phone. It's in the Baseband field. It will either say I515.09 or I515.10.

They're telling you it's the network because Samsung and Verizon REFUSE to acknowledge this issue. They say they have no record of this problem. Yet, a simple Google search reveals it's been happening since December 2011.

Fact is, in the OVERWHELMING percentage of cases, it's the phone. I can stand side-by-side with other GNEX phones and theirs are fine. The manager at my local store has this phone and his works fine. The display models work fine. My brother in law's works fine. Some of the phones are straight up lemons.

Interesting story - my brother in law and I swapped SIM cards in our phones. He then started having the signal drop on "his" phone...the I515.10. So it's not the signal...it's not my SIM...IT'S THE PHONE!

Wake up Verizon / Samsung...you're starting to look like idiots.

I'd buy mine again. I've had a couple times where I had one-way calls, but hanging up and calling again worked. Had the same issue with my DroidX and this things tons cooler than that. :D

With verizon it is about volume. If everyone with the problem calls, does the factory reset, and then let's them know the problem still exists .... eventually they flag it a known problem.

Sadly, many just check forums and live with it.

How does one "live with" an issue that makes the phone virtually unusable in 4G mode? I mean, I can't view webpages, videos, send / receive texts, or even phone calls because it happens so much. I have switched mine over to 3G, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

All that said, I'd still rather have this phone in 3G mode than any other phone on the market right now.

Many people who have issues research options and fix the problem or live with it instead of calling and going through factory reset and swapping phones. This makes for less volume of complaints and longer before Verizon tags it as a "known issue".

I'd be all for a fix if one existed. So far I've found that one does not. Apparently people are just living with it. I've locked my phone into 3G and still enjoy using it...albeit much slower than 4G...

I'm moving this week and noticed my signal while over at my new house these last 2 days....disappointed! Data drops and a dropped call :(

It's very spotty and is making me reconsider keeping this phone. The software is tops, but my new location will be home and I need signal.

The wife's SGS3 gets killer reception, I have an upgrade, but I really don't want the sgs3 as nice as it is (much nicer phone than the GN in every way).

When does the new Moto HD come out??

Hmmm... moto? locked bootloader? :D

I think I'd move the house.

Lol! :D

I thought I read that the photon on sprint will have unlocked btldr and everything after that on moto will also. I need to go back and reread that article though...

On sprint perhaps, but on Verizon forget about it. They locked the galaxy s3 and Samsung had never released a phone with a locked boot loader prior to that one. If that's not a damning statement then I don't know what it.

I wonder why Verizon didn't get the same OTA radio fix that us GSM users got. When I took my G-Nex out of the box and hooked it up to WiFi, the IMM76I update came in.

Small OTA Update (Build IMM76I) Rolling Out To The Unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus (Yakju), Reportedly Fixes Dropped Signal Issues

Isn't there another radio Verizon users can flash?

Its because we don't get the same updates that GSM users do. While their phones are almost identical to on the hardware side, the KEY difference is that they have a GSM radio and we have CDMA and LTE radios. They are fundamentally different and don't run the same software.

GSM users cannot use our radio software and vice versa. We have to wait until Samsung releases a radio update for our phone.

I know all that. :) I should of worded that differently. I meant... why did Verizon users not get a CDMA radio fix. Seems they needed it a hell of a lot more than the GSM users.

When I was researching this phone before I got it, one of the things I noticed was that the GSM version did not have the radio issues that the Verizon version suffers from.

I swear these mobile companies need to start hiring from the Android developer community and allow them to push out fixes. They'd have happier customers. Sigh... it's nice to dream though!

We have gotten radio updates. VZW released new radios for .04, which did nothing. They aren't very good at this, apparently.

It's the fact that the CDMA hardware in this device is horrible. It's the same as what was in the charge which was also horrible. No radio software updates are going to fix it enough.

For what its worth, I have a .09 and I am getting a replacement tomorrow. I have dropped data and calls since release week (I was the first one in the store on release day). I lose all signal several times a day. Sometimes I have to reboot the phone to get the signal back. Here's to hoping the next one works better. I do love my phone!
