Pop-Ups on Android Forums Lately

Just started tonight, every second thread I read now has a duracell ad that plays and grays out the rest of my browser. You cannot close it (although hitting F5 will reload the page and skip it) and must wait 30 seconds before it closes. This is downright insulting! How f'ing intrusive can you get? With many other quality Android forums I will gladly leave this site if they continue to push these adverts down our throat! I totally understand making money but this is ridiculous!

I have not seen anything. Maybe its another tab? Or something worst =X

No, its this site. I have noticed it happens when the duracell banner plays on the top of the page. I don't mind banners but an add that stops you from browsing and forces you to watch is lame.

What browser are you using? I guess I should have noted I run ad block.

Moved to Suggestion Box/Feedback so the appropriate people can work on getting the problem fixed. :)

As mentioned above, if you can get a screenshot of it, it would help quite a bit!

I haven't seen it since last night. Weird

Good, maybe it's gone. I didn't see the one here, but I've seen those ads other places. What are they thinking? Sure, I remember the product, and I also remember that the ad pissed me off, and that reminds me NOT to buy that product!

Phases has stated he does not like members here annoyed by this type of ad; he's apparently watching for reports of them, especially with screenshots, as mentioned above, so that he can deal with them, meaning get rid of them.

It's come up a few times in the past:

As far as remembering the product and then not purchasing it because the ad was intrusive or whatever, it's too bad that doesn't work: there is a simple formula in advertising and that is, "the more exposure the more sales."

They don't care if people get annoyed because they know that their brand is being remembered and that's all it takes to increase revenue.

What can cut into that a little bit, though, is removal of the ads for that company in any form. Unfortunately that is not what site administrators seek to do when they deal with those ads, in most cases.

They petition the company to stop using their servers to bring certain types of ads into the view of their forum members, and that is all; the brand name remains in banners, etc instead of popups, popunders and full screen intrusions.

Not sure if it is for non members, the ad went away when i logged in but i clicked on it before i did.
It was a test your IQ ad.Totally hijacked my browser.I could only close it by ctr alt delete then running anti virus program.Every time i opened my browser it defaulted to their website and i couldn't do anything else.

Those aggressive ads are hosted by servers off-site, not by AF servers, although they pass through them on their way to user's computers.

The folks in charge here have stated that they hate those types of ads as much as members who encounter them do and they want to stamp them out.

Apparently it's an ongoing battle.

It's not just here - numerous forums I belong to are trying to weed these types of ads out, but when it is being served through a third party through, say, Google's Advertising network, then it is impossible to block Google advertising if you rely on it for revenue.

The best that can happen is that the board owners block each individual ad / IP address serving and report them to Google, who can then take action on their end.

The problem is that for every one blocked by Google, it's possible that up to 10 more are established.....

I think this is a crappy add to have on the homepage. It makes you think you have a PM at AF, but no, it's a paid advertisement.

Checkout the screenshot below....:(

Good job on the screenie, j3cubcapt.

I'm sure you've seen the posts around here describing those "trick" or intrusive ads; screenshots are the way to go.

I've merged the three threads directly related to intrusive ads to make it easier (a) to report them and (b) for Rob and Phases to see the reports.

I'm getting all sorts of junk from this forum. And I do KNOW that it is this forum; I just finished building another clean system and androidforums was the ONLY thing I looked at! Lol.
I get this Video Cop adware virus that's just impossible to extract, along with a constant additional browser window to wordslife opening when clicking new page links here.
I've never seen such aggressive adware and browser hijacking from anything other than porn sites that have decimated people's browsers.
This is on Opera and IE 7.
