Root Porting ClockWorkMod to the Kyocera Rise

ikr lol. but isnt there a factory version of ics? not an updated ics i mean from when the phone first came out

lol well then. too bad that there isnt one. if there was then we could flash the boot image or is there more to that

Not to totally revive an old thread, but I still think somebody should port 2nd-init to these phones as a quick and easy solution to working around this troublesome bootloader.

Here is a 2nd-init source, I don't know what all needs to be done to it to make it work with these phones, but if somebody is feeling courageous... A quick glance tells me that it is set up to be built against the android source. If somebody wants to mess around, we had posted some very early code on github a few months ago which compiled the kernel from scratch, a working recovery and early bootlooping CM9 for this phone (A few pages back I explained how I got that far with it). Those sources can be found here: https://github.com/rise-recon and are set up to be used with the CM9 source.

I no longer have this phone, and I don't have a lot of time these days, but if anybody feels they have enough android/linux/programing know-how and wants to pick it up, I will do what I can to help

Hey guys, akaji17 says that he got our sister phone's bootloader unlocked this way:

1. Download RebootMenu from Google Play: hxxp://goo.gl/Xc7mHH
2. Within the app, click "Reboot Bootloader"
Once you do that, the device will restart at the boot logo and the LED will be red/orange: you are now in the bootloader.
3. Connect your device to your computer and go to Android SDK's platform-tools in CMD or Terminal and type: fastboot devices. This is to confirm that the device is recognized
4. If it is then type: fastboot oem unlock
5. Type : fastboot reboot

That should be it

Has anyone tried this yet? I would but I'm weary as I just got this phone today and it's my daily driver.

Just tried on my Rise (was VM; now no carrier) and it didn't do anything. I tapped "Reboot Bootloader" and it rebooted straight back into Android. Am I missing something in the process?

I find it extremely hard to believe that this would ever work. The boot loader is locked down tight on this phone. (there's a double integrity check built into it) If it were that easy you wouldn't even need an app, adb shell can reboot any phone to the bootloader given it isn't locked down. Many have tried for at least a year to unlock this phone, some have even pushed a recovery to the phone, only to find that the integrity check reverts any changes, or bricks the device. It might be possible to crack this phone open, but its highly unlikely it will ever happen, especially considering the low quality and age of the Rise.

Hey guys... always lurking in the shadows... yeah we tried that... the public mobile bootloader was accessible in the same fashion. however there was no result with the oem unlock command. however if you look through the first few pages, you will see that if you can access the bootloader(fastboot), you can use the commad "fastboot boot <image>" and that will allow you to boot into a compiled clockworkmod or twrp recovery. but if you flash it, it will never boot into recovery unless you flash back to stock. Whats funny is the rise has three variations. the virgin c5155, the sprint c5155 and the public mobile c5156. and if you flash a recovery from any of them on to an other including the hydro, those will boot just fine with minor partition errors due to the different partitions and screen positions in the mentioned phones. but the bootloader is locked. IT'S LOCKED!!! LOCKED I SAY!!!!! i bricked three rises trying to get the cwm on it and I'm just giving you guys the info. without compiling a new set of bootloaders, there will never be a custom recovery on these phones... sorry :)

true to what he said. but looked into something with another kyo device. you have to have it connected to the pc and all but it works. was wondering since fastboot is disabled can we erase the recovery partition and get fastboot enabled from there/ if so then itll be a step urther. but its computer dependent though. but hey a recovery is a recovery right?

heres where i got this,

[RECOVERY] Phil Z (computer dependent)
This is not a stand alone recovery, you have to use it with a Windows Computer.
If the bootloader ever gets unlocked or we get Loki, we can make a Stand Alone recovery

. Phone must be rooted (can use Framaroot)
. Phone must have sdcard inserted with a good amount of space

INITIAL SETUP (DONE ONE TIME ONLY)

ON PHONE
. Enable Settings > Enable Developer Options > USB Debugging

ON COMPUTER
. Download C6522N-rec.zip
. Extract C6522N-rec.zip to c:\C6522N-rec
. Plug Phone into USB Port
. Install ADB drivers in the Device Manager for Android mode
. Open command prompt
. Type "cd \C6522N-rec"
. Type "adb shell"
. Type "su"

(now we erase the recovery partition so that fastboot is enabled)

. Type "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery"
. Type "reboot recovery"
. Install ADB drivers in the Device Manager for Fastboot mode
. Type "fastboot boot C6522N_PhilZ.img"

Now you should be in Phil Z recovery

. Install ADB drivers in the Device Manager for Recovery mode

ON PHONE
. From Phil Z Make a backup to the external sd card

Keep the recovery partition erased, so that you can always get back into fastboot.
The stock recovery is useless and having fastboot is way better than stock recovery, and you have a way better chance of recovering your phone if something gets screwed up.

BOOTING IN RECOVERY AFTER SETUP

ON COMPUTER
. Plug Phone into USB Port
. Open command prompt
. Type "cd \C6522N-rec"
. Type "adb reboot recovery"
. Type "fastboot boot C6522N_PhilZ.img"

Now you should be in Phil Z recovery

RESTORE STOCK RECOVERY

If you want to restore the useless stock recovery, and disable fastboot mode you can do this while phone is booted to Android Mode

ON COMPUTER
. Open command prompt
. Type "cd \C6522N-rec"
. Type "adb reboot recovery"
. Type "fasboot flash recovery stock_recovery.img"

its for the hydro xtrm. but can this be worked backwards to provide a working recovery?

a vid on the xtrm,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETkF4B3sk2o#t=480

can this workaround be optional?

Well I just got three kyocera rises (C5156) because public mobile was bought out by Telus mobility. Telus operates on a HSPA+ network and all CDMA phones are no longer usable... They had been transitioning for six months.. now its done.. So i got a few testers... Maybe I'll try somethings out...

clue us in, what you got planned

Well first thing I gotta do is turn my C5156 into a C5155. If anyone has a sprint c5155 i could use a full dump(mmcblk0). make sure you gave it a wipe first and if you have early version ics 4.0.3, that would help our chances... I really don't think this will do it but maybe I can contribute a step forward...

Heh, way to get me sucked back in with that post like ;)

I will check my stocks in the next couple of days, I know I've got my collection of rises here still in my new 'Box of Phones' lol

So took out an old rise phone I had just to see if my tut on rooting still works. It did but I bootlooped it by doing the stupidest thing. I went to change boot animation and the file didn't download properly. Yea I forgot to revert back to the old boot animation. It got me so mad that that was the 4th boot looped rise or paperweight.

Which brings me to my next thought. Its on Kyocera! The war has begun. This will be unlocked with clockwork mod! I suggest starting a new post. The new post will provide everything we know to this point. Honestly this post is just too long. Though I no longer have a rise, I will purchase one if necessary.

Look for the post named "Team ItsOnKyo" if you are interested.

Stock Images (system is rooted, obviously):

Recovery: DepositFiles Download
System: DepositFiles Download
Boot: DepositFiles Download

Is this what I use to re-add the stock VM image on a rooted Rise
c5155 4.04 1.004VM?

I deleted some Google system apps, and the phone has been acting like crap for my dad, I like to repair it for him.

How do you run the recovery? My phone you just dump the image on the SD card and reboot to recovery?

Is he getting force closes from the app removal? Which gapps did you remove? I would shy away from flashing anything just yet. If it was only apps you removed, it can be fixed pretty easily. If he's getting force closes, I can pull the apps and their odex files from my wife's rise, upload and link them for you. Problem solved. I should mention this phone runs like crap regardless of what you do to it. That's why everyone wants clockwork mod so bad. A custom OS could fix probably %99 of the problems with this phone.

I don't know exactly what apps, where removed is there a list to compare lol?

But I wouldn't say things like Gmail still work. And up to yesterday and nothing changed at all, and I started receiving "process com.google.process.gapps " and I couldn't connect to my WiFi.

Basically what I'm trying to do is get back the ability to get my WiFi connection to work at its fastest. Standing if front of the router I still can only connect at 2-3 MB/s. My ISP speeds are 110/15 MB/s I don't think my router is forcing the bottleneck because my other devices/phone are connecting fast.

So maybe if I can just fix the WiFi speed problems I'll live with anything else. :)

I think it is probably time for me to throw away this phone and move on. Such a bad combination Kyocera and Virgin.
