If you're talking about changing the PRL, yes it can be done. PRL basically tells your cell phone which towers to connect to first.

I seem to remember reading about some members trying, but I don't recall the details. Maybe try a search?

I use a hybrid of the Sprint and VM PRLs. What this can do is allow your phone to connect to a larger set of towers. So if you are in my shoes, living in a VM deadzone, upgrading your PRL to the hybrid one can help. Now instead of only connecting to one tower while at home, my phone connects to one of three different towers near my house, so I at least always have service, if not great 3g speeds (but I'm on wifi at home anyway, so I just needed the PRL swap to be sure I wasn't missing calls).

However, away from my home, I never had any issues, and changing the PRL did not improve speeds outside of deadzones for VM.

It is a slightly dangerous thing to do, so be sure to read everything three times first!

... and you need the right ROM or recovery to do it. Doesn't improve 3G speeds.
