Root Possible to Root 2.10 HBOOT running GB?

xlr8r!

Newbie
Is there any way to root an EVO that has Gingerbread, but still running a 2.10 HBOOT? The new Revolutionary method only supports 2.15 & 2.16. I tried running Unrevoked3, but it consistently tells me that my version is too new, despite trying all the advised work-arounds. The phone was replaced under warranty, and came preloaded with GB, but the old 2.10 HBOOT.

Holy crap, I never heard of that. Well, yeah I did, but in a different situation.
Ok, what you should do is try to root using the old unrevoked method. If indeed your hboot is 2.10, this should work without a hitch.
Look under the rooting for dummies guide at the top of the forum. Read through that, and post back if you have any questions..

Tried it about 9 times yesterday. Each time it says that my version is too new. I used Unrevoked to root my original phone, so I am familiar with the process. I haven't seen anyone ever reference an instance where they have 2.10 HBOOT that is running anything other than Froyo. I think GB is screwing me from rooting, despite having the old HBOOT.

Have you tried doing a factory reset then running unrevoked?

No. Thought of that, but desperately trying to avoid wiping the phone if possible. I do have Titanium Backup saved on my card from my previous rooted phone, so I guess I could run a recovery from that, IF I am successful rooting this phone, but that it a big IF.

Seems a factory reset solved this for others in a previous thread. My Backup Pro does not require root I don't believe so you could try that one.

Wiped phone...still no success. Still get "version is too new" response from unrevoked and just for grins I tried Revolutionary again, but it still gives me the "your device is not supported at this time" due to the 2.10 HBOOT. I am at a complete loss. About to go start up my truck and suck on the tailpipe.

How the hell did I manage to get a phone with the GB OS and an old 2.10 HBOOT?

I don't think that the version of android you are running is going to cause an issue. Have you tried a different pc? I will look around, I know there have been issues similar in the past but can't remember what the solutions were.

You could try and flash the RUU for the 3.70 software that came with the 2.10 hboot. The bootloader shouldn't reject it as its the same version and it should return you to Froyo 2.2. Then you can try and use unrevoked after that. The version of unrevoked is a recent download and not an older version correct?

Edit: here is the link to the PC36IMG file for hboot 2.10

Yes. Using the latest Unrevoked version found on the "dummies" tutorial. At least I assume that is the latest.

You can try and go to unrevoked.com and make sure you get the latest one. I think the one in the guide is correct but just to be sure. Also try to run the ruu for your hboot and see if it puts you back to Froyo 2.2 then try and run unrevoked again in case the GB update is causing issues.

that is a little drastic dont you think?lol

weird though. do you have s-on or s-off? have you tried it with unrevoked forever?

Holy Hell...you won't believe this, but I've got S-off! I never even checked it, since it was a replacement phone...just went to work trying to root. Looks like all I need to to is flash a ROM. I am stupefied and a little embarrassed. What do you guys like for ROM's right now?

LOL! The little things we overlook sometimes :)

Can you get to recovery first off? Which recovery comes up if you can get there?

ClockworkMod Recovery v2.6.0.1

What should I do from here? If I don't reply right away, I appologize, as I have to take my girls to a B-day party. I'm so close I hate to stop!

Aside from picking a rom to flash(MikG 2.45 would be a great choice), I would suggest switching recoveries to Amon RA 2.3. I believe the instructions are in the GB Rooting Guide that Ocn linked you to. You can find MikG 2.45 in the Rom and Kernels Sticky.

+1 to amon ra2.3 and yes it is in the guide.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. I switched to RA2.3 and flashed the Mik2.45 ROM, which I love. The only hiccup I have encountered is that Titanium Backup Pro doesn't show up anywhere after re-downloading from market. I uninstalled it and tried again, with no luck. Strangely, after downloading from Market, there is no "OPEN" tab, as with all other app downloads, and it isn't listing amongst my apps, despite saying that is was installed. Any thoughts? I am anxious to restore my settings!

that is just the pro key. you need to download the free version as well. the pro key will unlock additional features.

You should take a look at Mybackup Root as it is a tad easier to understand then titanium for a new-to-root user.

Funny you should say that! I just posted a question about TiB on the board. I guess you can't restore a backup from a different ROM? When I did, it made it crash apps like crazy and I had to wipe and re-flash. I just want my settings back.
