Root Possibly new OTA coming in the near future...

So this not-so-smart NOOB that I know (that would be ME!! :D:D) recently rooted his phone and got all sortsa excited when he followed this link with information about the new EVO update and the use of an update.zip file to install:

HTC Evo 4G getting an update, adds NOVA demo game, Swype | Android Central

So, I followed the directions, downloaded the update.zip and tried to install on my phone, however, I got the follow error:

Question (1): Why did this happen and what does it mean?

Question (2): I'm assuming I was LUCKY that this happened...perhaps saved me some BIG trouble with my phone. HOW LUCKY was I that this happened??:confused:

THANKS!

Yeah, you should always wait for a flashable rooted version that won't mess with hboot/recovery/etc. I see from your other posts that you found the correct link :).

Flash them like you would any update from recovery. Before you go messing with around with the wimax radio, read up on it. If nothing else, make at least one full nandroid backup with RA recovery in case you lose your wimax keys. Updating the regular radio shouldn't be a big deal.

Is there a difference between making a normal nandroid backup and a "full nandroid backup"?

Does that mean that Swype is now officially supported for the Evo? No more secretly asking for warez .apk's etc?

Haha, sure, I think I can answer your other two questions.

1) Here's a pretty good article on what deodexed means:

What Is Odex And Deodex In Android [Complete Guide]

Basically, It gives you the ability to modify apk files in a way that is otherwise not easily possible. The purpose - theming via system apk files.

2) You can get the latest radio, wimax, etc, here:

[ Radios ][ 12-15 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI & NV versions - xda-developers

Flash them like you would any update from recovery. Before you go messing with around with the wimax radio, read up on it. If nothing else, make at least one full nandroid backup with RA recovery in case you lose your wimax keys. Updating the regular radio shouldn't be a big deal.

Sorry I didn't answer a little sooner. I've been having some really weird problems with my phone lately, and I had to restore a nandroid from over a week ago to (hopefully) fix it. It took some time to get everything back.

Such GREAT information in the links...thanks so much!!

And if you need some help with your phone problems there, let me know...;);) !!

Hey, speaking of OTA updates, do rooted phone users need to unroot before accepting it?

Yes, but never unroot to accept an OTA. The rooted flashable rom has already been posted in this thread. Flash that and the new radios, etc. instead. You will potentially lose root for quite a while if you unroot and accept the OTA.

Ok I flashed the two recommended files and I'm having issues, here's what I did and noticed:

- I flashed both files consecutively.
- After reboot, I noticed a FC immediately relating to Swype.
- Taking a look at my App drawer I noticed that a lot of MY apps were still present, is that normal after flashing the Steel ROM?
- It still showed the SuperUser icon, am I supposed to still be rooted?

Any help would be great!

1) Which files are you referring to that you flashed? Did you have SteelRom before?
2) Are you part of the swype beta/did you already have swype installed?
3) Did you wipe data? It doesn't sound like it. Unless you're upgrading a rom, you should always wipe data.
4) You are obviously still supposed to be rooted;that's the point.

1) The one that's linked in post #1 (specifically SteelROM_RevI) and Evo_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_WiMAX......etc... No I didnt have SteelROM before, I kinda thought the point of that ROM was just to receive the OTA upgrades then flash back to what ever ROM I was using, Myn 2.2 for the time being.
2) Yes and yes.
3) Yes, partition and Dalvik cache albeit using the inferior clockworkmod. I always wipe before flashing ROM's.
4) LOL, I apologize, I'm lost on what the point actually was if it werent to just have something temporarily til I downloaded the OTA updates.....sorry for the trouble.

Appreciate your quick reply!!!

1) Whenever you flash a rom, you're overwriting the current rom you have installed. If you flashed steelrom (which is sort of a custom rom. The actual rooted OTA is posted up a bit. It's close enough), then flashed back to myn's you basically just upgraded, then downgraded again. Myn's overwrote steelrom. Of course, if you flashed the new radios, you now have those with an older sw version. If you want the new OTA integrated into a different rom (Myn's for example) you need to wait until it's integrated into the rom.

2) If you already had swype, then flashed a rom based on the new OTA, you need to uninstall swype and the installer, then reboot. From what I understand, that'll take care of it.

3) What do you mean by partition? Are you talking about your sd card or did you actually wipe data?

4) I don't understand what you thought this was. This is a completely different rom based on the new OTA. All sense roms have to be based on a sw version. You just happened to flash one based on the new OTA. Flashing back to myn's uses the sw version that was based on.

I think there is more information on the issue you are dealing with here from the Swype forums:

Sooooo, has anyone seen any kind of change in performance with this update? Even with Titanium, restoring after a full wipe is a pain in my butt, and I'm not interested in a single one of those apps.

It sucks doesnt it lol. Takes forever to get everything back the way i like it.

Seriously.

It was funny, though, with the last update it took me something like three weeks to realize that I'd forgotten to transfer my custom ringtones back into the system. That's how often my phone rings; one night I just noticed the screen light up with an incoming call, and wondered why the hell it wasn't ringing... lol

Ok this update is totally useless to me. The only reason I wanted to try it was because of swype but I don't know that it's really any better than the stock keyboard -- I guess I got so accustomed to that keyboard that I'm actually pretty good with it now.

Now I basically have a phone with even more bloatware and some new "HTC Loggers" application that cannot be uninstalled and cannot even be killed! No idea what this application is/does yet.

So now that I have updated, is there a root method? I think I'm just going to root and finally get rid of all of these stupid apps that Sprint/HTC force down our throats. I know that unrevoked3 worked after people upgraded to Froyo with a one-click method...does that exploit still apply now that I'm running 3.70.651.1?

This is your only option now:

[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 S-OFF - Got the Game Upset Edition - Updated 12.16.10 - xda-developers

Unrevoked is working on an update for the Evo. According to their last twitter update, it sounds like they're working on a fix for the last couple of OTAs. If you can wait a little while for the update, you'll probably be better off.

Ok thanks for the info. Total bummer. I'll just wait for the unrevoked folks to push out a new update. Their old root procedure was great and really did work in one click but I wound up unrooting because I really just didn't have the need for root at the time. Now I'm just fed up with the bloatware so it's back to root for me!

It's especially nuts to me that nobody explained what the new "HTC Loggers" app is and why it cannot even be killed. It's certainly not necessary because it didn't exist before. I suppose it could be some way for them to write system logs or something, but I wonder if it's actually logging activities of users to be used for targeting advertisements or something.

Must...get root...for...rw privileges...on.../system.... ;)

Hang in there!
Those guys on xda and unrevoked are awesome and really on their game. You shouldnt have to wait too long before someone comes up with a way around the system and youll be rooted before you know it :D
