For those not used to Android....the battery life is generally pretty bad. Here are three things that have really helped me in the past:

1) Get JuiceDefender from the marketplace. It's free, it's small, and it works.

2) Get a good car charger.

3) Be careful what you install. Some programs and many widgets run in the background and constantly pull data, which drains the battery. Reading the app reviews before you download something often helps screen out the worst offenders.

Isnt this common sense?
 
A car charger doesn't affect battery life :rolleyes: though it is a good idea if you're in the car alot.

What exactly does juice defender do?

Android doesn't cause bad battery life; Moto products and Samsung products are proof of that.

It's HTC products.
 
I have a Verizon brand micro-USB car charger I bought for my Blackberry a few years ago. Being micro-USB, the connector will plug into the T-Bolt. Can I go ahead and use it without any fears of frying my phone?

To us, yes. But to newbies just unboxing their shiny new baubles, maybe not.

I will say this for JuiceDefender. It made my DX almost unusable. After I uninstalled it everything went back to working fine. I found that Tasker worked just as well by turning things on and off on a schedule or other event. It's a little difficult to get used to, and it costs like 7 bucks. But it's very good at what it does.

I have 2 Samsung Fascinates that last ALL DAY with HEAVY usage. Mom has an Epic; lasts all day with minimal usage. Pretty good, huh?

I've had Droid 1, Droid X; batteries lasted ALL DAY with HEAVY USAGE.

Had the HTC Incredible; battery last 5-6 hours. Not good, huh?

Now I have the HTC Thunderbolt (which I L O V E); battery lasts 5-6 hours. Not good, huh?

What power of mah came with the Thunderbolt? Droid X? Fascinate?

Clue: Moto/Samsung at minimum +100 mah over the ones HTC ships.

I get good life.
 
i have had a lot of small problems so far that are just me trying to learn the android OS, but the battery has not bothered me. I've only charged once since yesterday at 6pm. I still have half a battery left and I'm using the phone a lot downloading apps and stuff.

I will give you credit for the 3G/4G thing tho...I've been using wifi all day, and the battery has been great.

But didn't have to do that with Droid X, Droid 1, Samsung Fascinate.

HTC Incredible's battery life sucked even on 3G.

So it's not just '4G'. It's HTCs battery specs. There is no denying that time after time HTC ships lower spec'd batteries.
 
um richardmartinez, you posted the exact same thing in droidforums. this is neither a secret or very productive!

a car charge increasing battery life?!? come on.
 
I had awful expierence with two Fascinates in the 2months I owned them I never came close to lasting a full day. Worst phone I've ever owned. I wasn't getting a full day with the Incredible until I rooted after root and a good rom / kernal I got 2 days on one charge.
The TB I'm getting 8-15 hrs a charge. I think once its fully rooted and kernals are out ill see similar results.
 
I'm a heavy user, but only got the TB for the screen size/htc quality. I turned off LTE with the #*#*4636*#*# and turned it to CDMA preferred/PRL and it is fine now, I am coming from the Incredible with the 2600 MaH and would get two to three days on that.


As soon as Seidio comes up with an extended, buy it, limit your screen brightness, turn off haptic and vibrations, keep the volume reasonable. Oh and turn off animations, if you wanted to be forced to watch everything happen all pretty you'd get an Iphone.

If you keep the TB on 4G and it sits, as many people say the battery just drains, pretty rapidly too!!

We shouldn't have to root the phone to get good battery usage out of it.

I with I could get an "in between" battery upgrade. The one from Verizon is a little too large and unsightly for me. The one from Seidio just doesn't seem to pack enough juice. =(
 
Hey guys this is not a matter of where someone got something nor how relevant it is to you. It's a matter of someone giving good advice to people who might need it. Don't criticize someone who is just trying to help. If you don't need the advice then just move a long.
left coast - The U in USB stands for Universal.
Keyser - juicedefender will regulate when certain functions are on or off, such as GPS bluetooth, wifi, etc. True, it can make your phone worse if you set it up wrong. But I have gotten hours of extra battery life from using it. I have mine shut wifi off and other things off when the screen is off. You can pick and choose what to shut off.

Another helpful hint is to set when things update, set your weather to not update every hour only every 3 hours, or turn it off. Change the settings on how often facebook updates the contact info, etc.

The biggest help, get a widget that allows you to easily turn on and off wifi, ad especially GPS.
Turn GPS off when not in use. That is a big battery hog.

Seriously buy a knock off external battery charger and a spare OEM battery swap between the two you'll only be out $25 you'll never worry about a charger and you're phone wont look like a damn pregnant brick

Agree, extended batteries have only given me 20-30% more time then stock. Even when I have gone from 1400 to 2600.
I would much rather have another 1400

Honestly after taking off the batter door on this TB a few times I'm not very confident in it's ability to withstand very many off-n-ons.

Really piss poor design. Nothing more than having to pop tabs to get it off those plastic tab nubs are going to start wearing down and breaking off in no time.

Can't believe they didn't just put a slide/pull down type latch thing on there. Coming from a BB Tour and while it had lots of problems the battery door made sense.

Why they didn't put some kind of latch/spring type mechanism on here. Well I know why - shave a penny here, spend a penny there. Can't have it all. But constantly removing/reinstalling the battery door on a TB I'm getting the feeling is not a good long term idea.
 
Right now I'm not getting good battery life out of my Thunderbolt. But coming to Android from WebOS, I think went a little widget crazy. Within the next few weeks I'm hoping to dial-in my needs with this phone, and of course I can't wait to root so I can get rid of the Verizon bloatware.

Past HTC devices support your assertion, but this IS a Thunderbolt thread, so the bias and fanboy factor will be significant. Let's see how folks feel once the luv dust settles. More objective views perhaps.

BTW, what design genius came up with putting the speaker behind the stand?? I thought the TB had a muddy speaker and then noticed the speaker placement. I guess this design philosophy fits putting the sd card behind the battery ;) :)
 
After I did the Android Battery fix I woke up this morning at 7:57am and unplugged my phone. I've been using it as I always would through the day and it is 12:19pm now (4.5hr later) and I am at 70%. I have changed no settings, downloaded no special apps, actually did *nothing* other than perform a proper Android charge routine the first time and I'm fine.
 
AMEN! AMEN!

I knew the t-bolt had a 1400 mah battery when I bought it. I knew I could buy a spare. I know what "mah" is/means so have enough knowledge to know that I'm not going to get but so many hours of use out of an LTE, 4.3" phone on 1400 mah battery.

Get a spare battery. Or lower your expectations. 1400 mah is not enough for this phone. Not your fault but it is what it is. 1800 mah would have been nice. But that's not how V and HTC roll. I had my eyes open so I'm not disappointed.

One thing for sure. This phone is already too thick. I will NOT be buying a pregnant whale battery for this like I did for Incredible. I will practice good charging discipline and keep a spare bat in the backpack (in a zip bag). Done.
