Post ways to get awesome battery life.

It shouldnt be necessary to do this in order to get good battery life but....root that sucker, get a custom rom + kernel, and setup some setcpu profiles. Yesterday after 12 hours I still had 50% battery in a 3g area. Sounds good to me!

Really piss poor design. Nothing more than having to pop tabs to get it off those plastic tab nubs are going to start wearing down and breaking off in no time.

Can't believe they didn't just put a slide/pull down type latch thing on there. Coming from a BB Tour and while it had lots of problems the battery door made sense.

Why they didn't put some kind of latch/spring type mechanism on here. Well I know why - shave a penny here, spend a penny there. Can't have it all. But constantly removing/reinstalling the battery door on a TB I'm getting the feeling is not a good long term idea.

I completely agree- I've taken my back off twice and broke a nail the 3rd time and thought, well this was a terrible idea. It's also pushed me towards wanting the extended battery and not just back up's because it doesn't seem as easy to swap in and out like my BB was.

(Slash- I kinda miss my bb- but I'm giving the TB a full trial period)

I have no problems with getting my cover off. It just pops right off with no forcing.

Broken nails haven't been a problem for me, but I certainly feel like I am going to rip one out trying to get the back off my TB.

Ahh, Blackberry...a time where I didn't have device-envy every six weeks.

Some hong Kong comapnies came out with Generic extended batteries with a non hump , while the design of the Thunderbolt will limit what they can do I bet there better then the back HTC made for there extended battery

Once this phone has a good undervolted kernal you'll be able to get 20-40hrs easily out of the stock battery I can almost guarentee it

is there any advantage to using an undervolted kernal instead of say a program called setCPU?
 
Is it normal for my phone to drop about 10% battery every hour when it is just sitting in my pocket?

You can't expect a straight answer to this can you? There are tons of variables at play. What apps do you have running in the background? Are you in a 3g or 4g network? How is the signal strength? is gps on or off? is wifi on or off? etc etc.

Sorry, I probably should have given more info lol. I have a good 4g signal, my GPS is off, WiFi is off, and display brightness < 30%.

Also, I have the following running services:

  • Market "AlarmService"
  • com.smithmicro.DM "DMServiceApp"
  • Mail "EASAppSvc"
  • Mobile IM "HtcMimService"
  • PVWmdrmService "PVWmdrmService"
  • Touch Input "Touch Input"

And, JuiceDefender Beta is running with the following settings:

  • Profile: Balanced
  • Notification: Enabled
  • Screen: Enable after unlock
  • Disable on WiFi: Mobile data
 
You might try turning off location data and also any instant messengers, like Talk (Gtalk) and see if it improves any.

Also, any live wallpapers - they're pretty, but they eat juice.

Check your refresh time on your weather widget, if you're using one, too.
 
I don't know what to attribute for the battery problem I am new to the thunderbolt coming from the ally rooted with velocity 1.1. The battery useage seems to be a little worse then my ally but still not bad. I've added all the apps and games that I previously used and consider my use moderate to heavy but I unplugged my phone yesterday around 830am used pretty heavy throughout the morning using text, calls and internet, videos, and music just playing around getting use to it. then at work i don't get service so i switched to airplane mode which was around 2pm hooked up to a stereo in the shop and used it to play music for about three hours and was taking it off airplane mode to check internet make calls and texts every hour or so basically everytime i needed my nicotine fix. when i got home at midnight i still had 30% i haven't changed the screen brightness, sync times on any apps or downloaded any app killers or batter defenders and i'd say it does pretty good. it might just be my experience or everyone else has gremlins who's to say.
 
I see from a lot of the posts on here that people recommend getting JuiceDefender. Now is that in lue of not getting task Killer? or do ya'll get both?
 
I have had my Thunderbolt for 2 weeks. I had a HTC Eris Droid before this. I was disturbed to read so many problems when I first got it. I loved my other phone for everything except being a phone (I coukd never get calls or make calls without it freezing for periods of time). But it did everything else beautifully. I have an iPad but didn't want a mini iPad so I didn,t want the iPhone. I went with the Thunderbolt. I read all the forums after the first day and did every battery saving thing I could do. Last night I checked and was at 40:33 hours of up time with about an hour of awake time and I was at exactly 50% battery. during that time I made calls, used GPS, manually updated mail, etc.

I think the the things that make thr biggest impact are:
-Dimming the screen as far down as is comfortable. Mine is set for 12% and I only turn it up if I am in bright light.
-I keep mobile off most of the time and still get calls and texts and turn it on as needed
-I use wifi whenever possible
-I update everything manually when i need it

I also did the calibrate battery thing (a weird turning on/off thing with charging) and a I also bump charge but not every time. I also turned off vibrations, animations, etc.

It all depends on what your goals are. I want a reliable phone that I can also use to check mail, surf, GPS as needed. If you need To be fully connected all the time the battery will suck.

I don't think we should have to settle for a phone that doesn,t do all the things promised however we are the victims of our own need to do everything right away and be connected 24/7 so the companies push out products to make the sale because of the demand and then we are unhappy with half assed products but it's sort of the American way at this point.

For the record I haven't done the most recent update because, thanks to the forums, I knew I would lose my hot spot and I had one day where the phone did a few random reboots but it has been fine ever since. And I had one bad day with the GPS but it has been fine ever since. Now that it seems to have settled down I really like this phone and it is blazingly fast when I need it and makes a perfect call every time.

To be honest. I'm pretty sure JuiceDefender is more gimmick than it is good.

I personally get great battery life out of my TB. My phone is rooted and using a custom rom but nothing else as far as kernels and so forth.

I do not have anything syncing data. I have no bells and whistles. Even when i had FB and Gmail synching i could go the whole day and basically into early morning before having to recharge on near-moderate use (an hour of music, 10 or so txts, 10 minutes of browsing).

If i were to leave my phone on (40% brightness) it would drop 1% ever 5 minutes and ~10 seconds. 1% roughly every hour on idle. 3g, 4g, wifi. The rom i use also turns radios off if idle.
