Post your Android Desktop

Ok I am new to all of this. I just upgraded my firmware on my HTC Hero to 2.1 I am not familiar with how to do these themes and change the icons and what not.

How do I go about learning how to do this kind of stuff on a non-rooted phone? I would really like to change up the look of my phone, but I have no idea how to do it or where to go to get started and learn.

Thank you,
Whiteice

I am still hoping someone wouldn't mind helping me out here to learn how to do this. I have no clue on how to do this, thus the reason I asked here or what I am looking for.

Thank you,
Whiteice

Step 1: Download a third party launcher (The 2 big ones are LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher)

Step 2: Search

I played a little bit more with it, final result of the central screen (other pages are not so cool, need to search for more/better widgets) :

Could you please share where you got your dock icons?

Also, what is the weather widget that displays the forecast rather than just the current day?

From top to down :
dClock - Android app on AppBrain
Weather forecast widget - Android app on AppBrain
BattStatt Free - Android app on AppBrain

The launcher is Zeam Launcher, icons are changed through FolderOrganizer lite - Android app on AppBrain , the icons are from kovicon hybrid (icon pack), the background is this :

Quick update to show the new icons and dock that I made to go along with my new system font. They are similar to the MmnlText Icons that were made by UltraLinx, just in the Neutraface font. I also made a smaller dock as I felt the one I was using was not only too dark, but had too much wasted space.

The following were what I was using before, same layout, different background:

So, i decided to buy the Pure Messenger widget in the end (sorry Google for lying via MarketEnabler, but it's your fault for not giving me the option to buy :D), so here are the left and right screens (i posted the main screen before) :

Thank you for the reply.

Is there a preference between the two programs you mentioned?

When you tell me to search, are you saying like search google? Or, is there a search feature within the programs mentioned?

And when I download one of the two programs, are there any dedicated websites that you all know of that host the themes and what not for us to look at and download?

Thank you for your time,
Whiteice

Use the launcher which suits you better. For example i use Zeam Launcher, it fits my requirements.

No dedicated website. But you can find a lot of stuff on webs like XDA-Developers, Droidforums, here,... And yes, by search he means Google, AppBrain (to search for widgets, apps, iconpacks).

Thank you for your information.

Since I am just starting out on this and learning how to do it, I need to figure out which one fits my requirements like you suggested.

Thank you again for the information,
Whiteice

The main point is - if your launcher doesn't support shortcuts with custom icons, then you need to use BetterCut or FolderOrganizer to get shortcuts with custom icons. Then it's only about hunt for icons you like.

Then there are widgets - it's again about browsing and trying a lot of them, i use the AppBrain website for this (+their Android apps), so i don't need to manually install all the stuff, i just click the Install button on the website and it gets autoinstalled on my phone. Then i just have to try it, and uninstall if i don't like it.

It's all about trial and error.

I again thank you for your time and information.

I will check out the link you provided and see what else I can learn.

Thank you,

Im still working around with the launchers a little bit. I LOVE sense but I feel like im skimping a bit on the personalization aspect of it. I want something my own...not someone elses...oh well gives me something to do when im bored :P

This is what I have now...

Lock Screen (Thanks to all for suggesting lock widget)

Gotta say, I LOVE ADW and its flexibility. Although I do like launcher pro more, it doesnt have the illuminated dock and the icons are VERY off center for the official Sense docks.

And yes...I do like sense...a LOT!!!
