Do you mean invisible or to fan from the side?
If you mean fan from the side, I just did a 1X1 widget and placed it right on the edge of the screen. It did the rest on its own.

You have to root your phone. Some roms allow you to change the color of the nav buttons.

Nope, launchers and the like don't have access to the systemUI file, it requires root.

It only stays open until I select one of the apps or I tap outside of it. There may be some way to get something like that permanently, but I do not know how to do so.

Downloaded Nova Launcher yesterday and had a little play with it -> this is what i've come up with... I like a nice simple setup, and it works well with pretty much any wallpaper.
Widget: Palmary weather
Wallpaper? http://hazimiai.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/4949213.jpg shot from the 2010 Tour de France. (it conveniently has the blurred foreground which is perfect for placing apps)
Really like Nova Launcher so far.. main changes:
5x5 grid (up from 4x5)
Took off the Google search bar from the top
Took the background away from app folders
Resized Palmary 4x1 widget (to 5x1) -> this is a really nice feature of Nova.
I do prefer the Beautiful Widgets 4x1 weather widget though.. and i can't figure out how to get a background so its clear against the wallpaper.. i just want something similar to the Palmary background.. but on the BW widget.

There is a setting in BW to hide the background on clocks and weather.

I reinstalled and the background reappeared... but I can't set transparency now?!?!
I only get that option for the super clock and the home widget... it doesn't give me that option in the settings for the weather widget! Seriously getting frustrated
