Help Potential Dumb Question

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I am going to ask it anyway because I don't remember if it used to do this or not.

Here goes: If the phone is on a flat surface like a table or even being held in your hands parallel to the ground, is it unable to switch back and forth between portrait and landscape? I've noticed I have to have the phone slightly tilted upwards when holding it in my hands for it to switch. If it is more parallel to the ground, it won't switch.

Is this normal or is mine broken?

Again, sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm getting paranoid about it and figured I would ask.

Thanks.

That's how it's supposed to be. The accelerometer is gravity based...but its based on the display facing you while you're holding it in your hand.

Sitting flat on the table the phone doesn't know which orientation it should be in so it just stays in the same orientation it was in previously. You need to face the phone's screen towards you to actually cause a change.

Having said that...the stock launcher does not rotate...but most apps do support landscape viewing.
