Root Pre-rooting questions!

Firstly i want to say that i've read a lot of threads, FAQs and guides about rooting and i still can't figure out a thing about how to root, coz i'm a total noob! T.T
i'm tired about the memory of the desire so finally decided to go with rooting, if i can understand the procedure.

So here are the questions, bare with me if i sound stupid =(

1) Can someone tell me the procedure to root? From Lekky's thread about the root guide for newbies, the procedure is this: Root, Install rom, and install aps2sd+. but from some of the other threads which i could not remember, some talked about using CD-writer and i've totally no idea wad they were talking about T.T

2) And now comes the custom roms part. Is there a list of roms that tell us what is inside it or something? i mean from the threads i read, certain roms have to install a different way or something? and that using slcd screen will not be compatible. i dun mind if there is htc sense on it coz i'm mainly using launcherpro. And also lekky's thread is about how to get custom froyo while rooting but i already have my froyo. =/ so i'm really not sure wad to do T.T

3) And there is this thing about hboot, and flashing of radio, and clocking, Man all this sounds alien to me. no matter how much i read all the guides tells me different things about all these!

4) Some guides also talked about a must have for goldcards and some says goldcards are unnecessary.

5) Okay and the last question for now i guess =/. When using apps2sd do u have the whole sd card to be used for apps or u have to do some kind of partitioning(another alien word) and have like only 512mb of memory for apps? i read it somewhere but can't remember where..=/

Sorry for the lengthy post but i hope some kind soul out there will understand my position as a totally noob kid =/

Btw i'm using froyo 2.2 with slcd i think(the box doesnt state amoled)
And i dun think i'm branded or locked, whatever those 2 mean =/ coz i bought mine from starhub.(Singapore)

I actually just rooted and flashed my phone like a few hours ago. It takes some time and its best to really understand what you're delving into. Go to the Desire - All things Root subsection of this forum. You'll find lots of things about rooting and flashing of phone over there. You can also find danfrance and in his signature are links to the FAQs about rooting and other stuff.

Yea thats exactly where i went..but there are so many versions of rooting guide that it makes me confuse as to how this procedure really works =/

Must do's before rooting. WITHOUT QUESTION. Read and understand what rootiong is and what it will give you, MAKE A GOLD CARD, you first step should always be a gold card, once you've done this you'll have a little more confidence.

MAKE A GOLD CARD!

These are also in the rooting sticky now.

OP, unrevoked is the best way to root. In the rooting FAQ, I link to a guide which I personally recommend.

Ok i guess i'm using the unrevoked guide provided by dan..thanks dan =)
so am i right to say that the goldcard should be in my phone at all times during rooting?
and what about the custom roms and apps2sd? which is the better ones and where how do i install them? =/

Again, see the faqs in my Sig ;)

Goldcard is a precaution. You don't need for rooting if using unrevoked. It's a recovery precaution

ok then for the last 2 questions..bear with me please T.T

how do i do this 'Format the microSD card to FAT32 format'?

and last!!

is there a list of custom roms out there? i want one with apps2sd+ and preferably with sense, although i using launcherpro. And where and how to install to ur hp =/

Concentrate on rooting first, worry about partitioning after your nerves have settled.

READ DAN'S FAQ

Leedroid is a good one to start, you'll know the A2SD ROM because it has A2SD written beside it.

Okay..thx a lot..but i need to learn how to format the sdcard to make the gold card =/

and is setcpu and rom manager included in the leedroid rom?
coz i dun haf credit card or debit card so i cant buy any apps..

sry kept on having questions to ask T.T

2 options
use a usb-microsd dongle and when connected reight click the usb drive in windows and click format, select fat32

other method is click disk drive while phone is connected to computer, then do the same as above

HELP wad did i do wrong T.T

Now it stays at 'pushing recovery...(4317184 bytes)'...gosh wad do i do T.T

A common mistake is that HTC Sync isn't fully ininstalled, or your phone driver isn't properly installed in Windows.

Yes a free (restricted) version of Set CPU and ROM Manager is included with Leedroid.

Well unfortunately you are doing something wrong. My advice is to STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE, have a cuppa, walk the dog, walk next doors dog!

Come back in a few hours and start again, from the beginning. Check everything!

have you installed the hboot drivers from unrevoked?

download them, boot the phone to hboot and connect device, associate drivers via device manager

make sure there is nothing else adb related installed on the machine, a prime example is droidexplorer. They have ADB daemons of there own and if its started then adb from unrevoked doesnt work

I had this exact problem on my desktop machine and had followed the instructions correctly.
I redid the instructions on my laptop and it worked fine. Unfortunately I still don't know why the desktop didn't work.

sorry for late reply..i went to eat after the stress was over =)

yea i got it working finally and now to custom roms!!

thx guys =)

Hi got another problem i guess =/

i dwlded leedroid's rom with a2sd and put the zip file in my phone, thn used rom manager to install rom in sd card. then there is this android with a triangle on my screen and it has been like this for around 15 mins now..is it supposed to behave like that? how long till the process will complete?

Doesn't sound right.

I believe that the A2SD version of LeeDroid requires you to have an ext3 partition on your SD card before installation, so I guess the first question is whether you partitioned your card first?

Actually that's the second question: the first is, did you do a nandroid backup before installing the ROM?

yea i partitioned it following dan's guide..

and no i didn do nandroid coz i did titanium and mybackup..

so do u know what's wrong? =/
