Root pre-rooting questions

Your guide is top notch mate, my phone is now rooted :D

Well I guess it is cos I have superuser in my app drawer! :)

unrEVOked worked like a charm, no probs at all.

Next step is a ROM but I think I'll leave for another day, I've had enough excitement for 1 day :D

Ah glad you're sorted.. the unrevoked guide is not mine but its the one followed when I wanted to get the drivers right do that's why I recommend It ;)

Backup before rom ;)

Yep & I'll be reading your FAQ on apps2SD+ a good few times before I go for the ROM :D

Basically I need to:

Move all apps back to internal memory
Backup SD card to PC
Run Nandroid backup
Partition SD card with ROM manager
Flash ROM with a2SD+ suported

Does that about cover it?

Ok cheers, a couple more questions if I may :D

Do I need to do anything with Titanium before I wipe & flash the new ROM?

When I have installed the new ROM how do I reinstall what I've backed up? I can't bear to lose my Angry Birds game!!! :D

Anyone point me in the direction of a step by step guide of everything that I need to do from start to finish?

So I guess this is what I need to do now I'm rooted:

Backup ROM using ROM manager
Backup apps etc using Titanium
Backup SD card (inc above backups) to PC
Flash new ROM
Reinstall apps from Titanium
Partition SD card using ROM manager

Does that about cover it?

When you install the Rom if you're using rom manager, you tick a box to back up whilst flashing the Rom.

Also a2sd+ roms won't boot without partition so you need to partition card before flashing Rom

Why's that?

The data partition is where is your apps and settings are. Your Rom is on the system partition

Flashing a Rom does not delete data. But your settings can be incompatible with your new Rom.

If you get a boot loop after flashing a Rom, it means you need to wipe data. It's the system settings that are the problem.

Titanium restores all these settings ergo, restores the settings you needed to wipe to get your rom working

Restore user installed appa with their data via titanium is fine. Anything that looks like a setting, avoid

So when I do a restore with Titanium I'll get the option what to put back on the new ROM?

Really I should be looing for stuff that I've installed like Angry Birds, eBay, K9 etc etc.

Sounds confusing :(

Do I have to do a wipe or if I go from stock to Leedroid for example & there isn't much difference can I just install it over the top with ROM manager?

Try flashing with out wipe. If it doesn't boot, wipe

So just install ROM Manager, flash a recovery image & then install new ROM from SD card & see what happens?

Guess I would still be better backing up my SD card to the PC just in case......

Well yes backup sd cause you have to partition it which will wipe it, before flashing the Rom

Do you partition before or after flashing the ROM or does it not really matter?

Before. And yes it REALLY matters.

If you flash a Rom with apps2sd+ support, it won't boot without the partition.

I did mention this,earlier ;)

Nah seriously, I'd rather you get it right and not get yourself in a pickle.

Many people don't take the time to ask questions first. For those that do, I have all the time in the world for.

Top man.

I know I have to do the backups with Titanium & also my SD card to the PC after I've backed up the ROM in ROM manager but when in the process do I partition the SD for a2sd+?

I recommend doing all your backups (NANDROID and Titanium).

Then back SD card to PC.

Partition Card

Put SD data back + ROM you want to install

Flash rom (wipe data if required)

So when I'm backing up the SD card to the PC I just mount the phone as a disc drive & copy all the files that appear to the PC & then just restore them all after I've done the partition?

This is probably a stupid question but when I mount the phone as a disc drive the SD card is unavailable then - do I need to do something to make the PC see the SD card so I can gain access to the files?

Yep. make sure your PC is set to see hidden files and folders too.

I just create a folder on desktop called SDcard, then I can copy the contents to and from that location easily enough

don't understand the question really. Mount it as disk drive when you plug it in for PC to see it. Select charge only to unmount it from PC (Which mounts it back in the phone) for the phone to see it..

Cheers, I couldn't get my head round if the PC would automatically see the SD card when I mounted the phone as a disc drive.

Think I'm getting (a little) more confident now - til it goes wrong of course

Just need to decide on a ROM & a free couple of hours or so to have a go at it now.

The phone can't see it, but your PC will :)

It's highly likely that you WILL have a problem, but highly unlikely that it will be something you can't recover from. Most problems are just simple things, like the phone not behaving like you expected, or you forget to do one of the steps correctly. The trick is reading enough about the potential problems so that you have an idea what can happen and what can be done to sort it. Plus, plenty of help on these boards too :)
