Predict the 5 AT&T Android Phone

Sorry, when people ask me for an opinion I don't play the wishy washy game of it could fit this or that maybe if you want. When I see a substandard piece of hardware I call it like it is. For goodness sake not even putting android 1.6 on the device is halfway crippling. And yeah yeah plans to get to 2.1 some day I know. But I know people who want a device that is mostly messaging phone but can still do facebook/twitter and I still tell them to wait. or if they really want to, go Iphone.

While I completely disagree with Apples philosophy of development and os lockdown. if you want a toy phone or niche phone. Iphone > Backflip.

If we think things are bad now if the rumors over at HF are true and both the Shadow and Droid 2 are going to be hitting Verizon is short order. As in a June then a July launch. Our android selection will look even worse. Even if only one is hitting soon for them that would give then 3 higher end android devices to the iphone.
And I can just see the reps on FB we are the only provider that offers phones for all OS and we are proud of our selection of phones.

Well, we could potentially be getting the Nexus One subsidized. IF that comes to fruition things will be somewhat equalized between the carriers. Best part is I've seen people running the Desire ROM on the N1, so it'd be like an HTC branded device. I'm actually really curious to see how the subsidized N1 plays out.

Speaking of that... The N1 is on AT&T already so perhaps they're counting that into the 5?

Would be nice to see the N1 subisidized. As to the counting it as one of the phones they are not selling it and because of that they nevered launched it. The biggest problem with us seeing a N1 is the fact it is a google experence phone meaning that the providers can not do anything to it. And I do not see AT&T allowing that as long as they are in bed with apple.

Well, Google did say they're going to start shifting the phone to retail channels and have it be subsidized so we can only hope it somehow makes it to AT&T subsidized. As for AT&T counting it... I could see them counting it now that they aren't going to hit 5 just to help save face.

Lol that would be hilarious. Then they might as well name every Android device that works on AT&Ts 3G:
Nexus One
Motorola Milestone
HTC Desire
Acer Liquid E
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10
Motorola Motoroi
HTC Legend
Motorola Dext
HTC Dream

Too true.
And then after this fiasco on the android phone launches they expect us to believe that they will upgrade the whole network to HSPA+ in 7 months.
Yet they do not see any correlation to it. That when you tell people something and fail to come through that they do not believe what you say later. And AT&T is fighting a perception game right now and loosing badly.

The phone Rogers is getting is the Acer Liquid E.

The phone in the link is the upcoming Acer Stream (originally the Liquid Stream but Acer decided to drop that phone from the Liquid line. Thank God because that phone is butt ass ugly).

It could be AT&T or Cincy Bell or any Canadian carrier.

Ah; my mistake. I didn't realize that the "Liquid" was the line & the "E," "Stream," etc was the model. Yeah, not such a hot looking device what w/the buttons, etc.

We currently have 1 craptastic subsidized Android on AT&T and the only other confirmed one is equal or worse(Dell Aero)...and you guys are worried about the looks of the phone?

As long as it ships with 2.1, a better CPU, memory and expandability, I will jump on it over this Backflip.

Would I love a top of the line, drop dead gorgeous phone? Of course, but come on...

There is absolutely no excuse for AT&T to not have something in the class of the Incredible or the EVO 4G or the Desire. None. Myself personally I don't want a slider. I don't like physical keyboards. In the case of the slider that made it through the FCC, if that's it, it being absolutely atrocious looking and having a major feature that I will never use is a deal breaker. Seriously, what the hell is with that massive optical pad?

Here's a theory... what if AT&T is planning to hold true to their word about 5 by the end of Q2? Maybe they were planning to update their data plans before releasing the phones, now that they've done that we're going to see 4 phones release in the next 3 weeks.

It's possible. They're certainly laying the ground work. Also, AndroidGuys is reporting that Samsung is sending out "save the date" emails for an event June 29th. That's certainly still 1H 2010, if AT&T is one of the carriers announced that day.

5 Phones..
Moto Backflip
Dell Aero
HTC Intruder?
HTC Aero/Liberty?
Dell Streak?
Samsung i897/Galaxy S/Captivate?

Wait, that was 6... And then somebody on another forum said their AT&T rep told them something about an LG phone.

Didn't I just say I was done speculating? Damn you, Android! Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!

I talked to a Store Manager yesterday, and his belief is that AT&T will not release another Android by July.

His reasoning-a manufacturer would be stupid to try to place a new phone into the AT&T stores during the iPhone madness. While all the iPhone launches have been huge, this time they are actually allowing anyone who's contract is up in 2010 to upgrade as if their contract was done. For whatever reason(loss of exlusivity, incentive to pump numbers) AT&T is totally single minded when it comes to this launch.

They are also increasing the "return time" for anyone who bought an iPhone 3g, 3gs out to include anyone who purchased after May 7- so adding another week.

I am sooooo bummed. Why couldn't they have gotten a subsidized N1, Samsung Galaxy S, or even the Streak out by iPhone pre-order date??

Thing is, AT&T put out a PRESS RELEASE about the 5 phones. It wasn't just some random talking head at a convention saying stuff just to be saying it. It was an official press release. Analysts, investors, and shareholders use that information to buy/sell stock or otherwise have financial interest in AT&T. As a major company, you don't put out a press release like that unless you damn well mean it, and if stuff happens that you can't meet your goals, you put out another presser to somehow change or append what was previously said.

If AT&T misses the mark on the 5 phones by 1H 2010, that's going to be a big deal. Share price will drop (maybe/probably not a lot, but some). Not because AT&T doesn't have 5 android phones (in the long run nobody really cares in the financial world), but because they failed to deliver on the expectations in their press release.

What about if you can't veg&potato your goals? :p;)

But yes, you're right about the press release/investor/stock bit :D

Not really. They said they "plan" to bring out 5.

They will spin it as they had to "look at the speed of the market, analyze the changing landscape and do what was best for you the shareholders. We reallocated our people and worked with Apple to make the iPhone 4 the largest launch in our history, due to this opportunity we had to slow down our integration of the Android products.

We also realized that our network was not up to our high standards and have spent considerable amount of money to increase and improve our infrastructure to meet our current and future users demands. We have changed our pricing structure regarding data usage as another improvement in this front. All of these changes have made for an exciting and profitable second half of 2010"

I am not trying to argue with you, just saying that they do not have to spin it until they have a "good" story to tell. One of the things mentioned by Cnet was that by allowing people on contract till the end of 2010 to "re-buy" they will get a bump at a time that is usually slow for new contracts.. whether that is true or not, I don't know....but the holidays seems like a huge time for new contracts and if they can put them on the books during summer...while pretending that they expect holiday numbers to be as good as usual, most shareholders would like that..
