Root Problem signing in to Google...

Hey guys I have a buddy who just got an X and I flashed GummyJAR to it and he lost all his contacts. So I flashed back to the stock nandroid we saved. Contacts came back. Then it started acting wierd so I did a battery pull... when it booted up again it said something to the effect of, "there was a problem starting application Google, must force close"... and all of his contacts disappeared again. I tried several things, including going in and signing into his google account on the phone manually. It said it was already logged in, but still no contacts.

I tried about everything I could think of, then I flashed his nandroid again. This time as soon as the phone booted back up it did the same thing, no contacts, problem with some Google app... whatthe deal? Has anyone else ever come across this problem? If so what did you do? I'm going vack over today to sbf his phone back to stock. If that doesn't fix it, I don't know what the hell will?

Did you wipe data and cache before installing GummyJAR?

Seems odd that a nandroid restore wouldn't fix it since the nandroid is supposed to restore EVERYTHING. You could try wiping data/cache/system before restoring the nandroid to make sure there are no errant files, I don't know if the restore process does this or if it just overwrites the partitions.

Are his contacts still attached to his Google account if you sign in on a computer?

Do the SBF, and before you boot the phone the first time, boot into the stock recovery and do a factory reset. That'll be the cleanest option.

P.S. I bet your friend is impressed. I'm guessing you said, "ooh, man, you just wait until we get this loaded, your phone is just going to fly. It's gonna be so fast and smooth and problem-free. Just you want...

...Oops."

Happens to a lot of us! ;)

Yeah BIG TIME!!!

This has been a learing process for both of us. He's learned that phone technology has made GIANT leaps forward... and I've learned that the DX can be a bit more challenging than I ever gave people credit for. Whenever I saw someone on here complaining that they just couldn't figure out how to work the phone I just thought they were too lazy, or exaggerating their issue's. But trying to work the kinks out of his phone has shown me that some of those issues are absolutely real, and not as easily worked out as I had previously thought.

Sort of embarrassing in a way. When you build something up to be, "fast, easy, bulletproof, intuitive"... and then when they get it they can't make heads or tails of it. One thing I learned forsure is you shouldn't rush anyone into ROMing and the like. I had GummyJAR in his phone the first day he got it. He never even got to learn the stock ROM first. So without knowing anything about blur, how could he possibly know that the speed of GummyJAR is an improvement over the stocker?

That's why I decided to flash him back to stock. I figured he aught to learn the ins and outs of the phone in stock form before he tries the more advanced ROMs. I rocked the stock ROM for 6 months before trying out different ones. That's how I could tell immediatelly which ones were an improvement and which weren't. And which improvements were the most important to me for getting the most out of the device that I could.

But not everyone is looking for the same thing out of a device, so I need to let him figure that all out for himself and stop pushing the things I like on him. Definately a learning experience!
