Help Problem with making/receving calls

Had mine for a week already and today it was the first time it happened. Started with me failing to send a text. Tried again and txt failed. Then I tried to call the person and that's when i heard...nothing. *Dom Dom Dom*

Motorola support called me as I had asked to have the issue escalated. They did confirm they are aware of the issue with the Photon and are working on a fix. They did not give an ETA on the fix though. I was pleasantly surprised by the phone call though.....
:)
I discovered the problem today, but also found out that I have the problem IF I turn the phone like I am going to lay it on a table, horzontal position, the sound goes away. I believe it has to do with it thinking it is going in your pocket and starts shutting things off, like your ability to talk and hear. When I picked up the phone in a normal position the sound and two way communication comes back. This is very repeatable on my Photon! Looking for the software fix, as I use the speaker phone and lay it down a lot. well i did prior to getting this phone.

I posted in the Motorola forum. This is highly frustrating and I don't even own the phone yet. I just find it hard to conceive of a company that would spend their money, talent, and time to create such a beast of a phone and allow it to continue to be unable to actually function as a phone.

Truly stunning...

***EDIT***
This "fix" didn't work long term. I had been having the issue multiple times a day with multiple reboots. After turning off my Hero, it has happened once in 36 hours. Better, but still sucks.
***End Edit***

I have been lurking in this forum since I bought my Hero a couple years ago. I really enjoy all the information.

I started having this problem Yesterday after only having my phone for two days.

Yesterday morning, I decided to charge my hero and power it up so I could go through the apps and make sure I got everything I had before (that I still wanted)

Multiple (and by multiple I mean at least 10) times Yesterday, when I tried to answer an incoming call OR when I tried to dial out all I heard was dead air. When I did connect with the people I attempted to call (or answer) they said that all they heard was dead air.

A shutdown and power up would fix it for a while.

I also tried the various other ideas (changing between sprint only, any CDMA or Automatic, taking out the battery, etc...) none worked.

Then I turned off my Hero.

That was Yesterday at 6pm.

I haven't had the problem since and I have used the phone just as heavily Today.

My solution - Make sure your old phone is turned off.

My Hero has been off, battery dead off. I had the problem again today after trying the battery pull yesterday. Interestingly though the issue happened earlier in the day, so there goes my theory of it happening at a specific time in the day.

Tonight I completely pulled the battery on my Hero to see if that would help.

Now, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but if I use http://marketplace.android.com and install from the web, it makes me choose between Hero or Photon. So I thought, hmm.. I wonder if somehow it thinks two devices are active??? I checked Sprint.com to see what my plan showed and the Hero doesn't even exist to them anymore. So I don't know why the Market still has two phones tied to my account... maybe unrelated though?

I'm going to call Sprint tomorrow and see if I can get this update others are talking about pushed through.

Damn...I must've jinxed myself. Got the issue for the first time today. I really like this phone a lot, so I hope it's just a software fix.

I've personally had the normal "ghost" call problem that this forum is all about... but twice tonight I have had a situation where I could hear the person on the other end of the line but they could not hear me... WTF Sprint and Motorola!?!?! This is total BS! FIX IT!!!

Some people may find this to be odd/funny, but even having experienced this...I really am not mad at all. I just powered the phone on/off and everything worked fine again...LOL.

Now, the important thing for me is if this would be a software or a hardware issue. If it's software, I'll just sit back and wait until Motorola/Sprint sends out the fix. If it's hardware, that's completely different because I'll need to go replace the phone before I get stuck with bad hardware for long term.

Hey everyone. I finally figured after over a year of lurking I'd finally join and make a post. I am having the same issue as most of you are with "ghost" calls. Thankfully I've only had it happen a few times, but it's still an issue nonetheless. I called Sprint to to see if I could get confirmation that this was a software issue and not hardware. I was transferred to tech support and was assured it was software related and an update was in the works. I told her I wanted a note placed in my file stating that I was told it was software related - mostly so if it is never fixed I can try and get a different phone.

Other than this occasional issue, I love the phone.

Just received my phone yesterday afternoon, and was able to make a couple of calls with no issues. Today, I went to make a call and experienced the same issues as everyone else; no sound whatsoever. I'm glad that there's at least a temporary solution for this (and that it's hopefully just a software issue), but I'm very upset that a basic function isn't even working correctly. It's the middle of the month now, so hopefully an update will come soon. :(

I am now on my 3rd Photon, and all three have exhibted this issue. In fact, they may be getting worse considering this one did it three times yesterday and my first one was once every day or two. Had I know this I would have kept the first one. This phone is a potential liability and if I didn't love everything else, it would have either been a no look back return or several pieces on a concrete floor. It still might end up one of those anyway.

Blah... I was able to make a call after trying a battery pull, but later had the same issue again. This is a massive disappointment...

This is becoming quite the deal breaker for me for this device. I love it. I really do. But having to reboot my phone 50% of the time in order to hear incoming/outgoing calls is a bit regoddamndiculous. Its not getting better.. its getting worse.

Yes, to follow up, NO this did not end up working, sorry I didn't get back here quicker. I was able to get sprint to give me a Refurbished Phone (Blackberry) for free because I complained about the call issue. I am getting that phone today by UPS and then deciding what to do about the Photon once I have a phone to use now. I had an EVO but traded in at the Sprint store a day before I had these issues. I am not sure how long I will hold on to this Photon, I love the phone and want it fixed ASAP.

Alright, I had the "Ghosting issue" happen twice today even after restarting. I was set for Sprint Only so I know its not a roaming issue. I can only say what I was told from sprint when I called. They said they knew exactly the issue and needed to push a refresh to my phone (which I was on at the time). She had me hang up, pull the battery out for at least 30 seconds and power it back up. It did some type of an update and then said it was complete. She called me back to see if it came back alright. I asked her if this was a permanent fix or was she just trying something to help. She said it would fix it permanently. I asked why they were not pushing the update/refresh to all the phones. She replied that they are not sure that this problem it is affecting a majority of the phones and they are doing on a call in basis. She said if anyone else had this problem, they need to call in to have it corrected. I am not sure if this is actually fixing it, but this is the information I got. So far so good.

Great device but a horrible phone. After trying to use my original phone, after calling in for an update (didn't work), after swapping for a new phonton, my only FIX was getting rid of the photon. I now own the E3D. It's ashame however, I really wanted the Photon.

It is interesting so many are having this problem while many are not experiencing any problems at all. I live and work in a fringe area; this phone has not failed me at all even when showing only 1 or 2 bars - much better than any prior phone.

I have disabled 4g as it is not available n my area. Is there a possibility that is the problem and the difference? Are the problems on both networks? This might make no sense since I am not a phone technician - just wondering.

3G and 4G have no impact on call issues. That's for data.

... to both Sprint and Motorola that affects some, but not all phones. My understanding, is that it's a software issue that will be resolved in a MR update.

Sprint and Motorola have 14 more days to fix this or it's "Buh Bye Photon 4G" for me. I'm not going to get stuck with a phone that doesn't work as a phone.

Agreed. The Galaxy S2 is right around the corner. It's going to be a great phone as well. If it can make phone calls reliably, I'll switch.
