Help Problem with USB connection

I've had my LG optimus phone for over a year and nearly every day I plug it into my desktop USB for charging with no problems.

just yesterday something strange started happening. whenever i plug it in to the USB port, my desktop keyboard (also USB) stops working. The mouse is also USB but it works fine. The light on the keyboard goes out and it seems to do nothing at all. Even if I unplug the phone and the keyboard, and plug just the keyboard back in, I get nothing. the only solution is to reboot the computer with only the keyboard plugged in and leave the phone unplugged.

any explanation why this might be happening?
 
Urgh, USB issues..... :(

Doc's suggestion is a good 'un that won't inconvenience you. Mine are a bit more radical.

1. Reboot the PC and then try reconnecting the handset to a different USB port.

2. Uninstall any handset-related software, drivers etc, reboot, reinstall and try reconnecting.

3. Unplug all non-essential USB devices, then in Device Manager expand the USB Controllers tree and starting at the bottom uninstall all the devices. You'll eventually lose mouse and keyboard, and will have to use the Power button to shut down. Reconnect the keyboard and mouse (but no other devices) then reboot - this should reenumerate the onboard hardware, rebuild the Registry entries correctly, and hopefully fix the problem.

As to why it's happening; I've had similar symptoms and figured it was due to connecting multiple card readers, phones, display calibration devices, game controllers.... eventually Windows became confused about what was connected where. Solution #3 was required. :)

Slug has the correct fix. But to avoid this issue in the future you need to tell the system that you want to remove the usb device ie Your phone. In your task bar, you will find an Icon that is titled "Safely remove hardware or Eject media". Your LG phone will be in that list when you have it plugged in. Just select the LG Phone item in the list and the system will respond when its ready to have you remove the device. When it does, Turn USB off on the phone and unplug it. You will avoid these problems in the future by making this a ritual for all USB devices.
